As a german, i respect your analysis, didnt expect a non german to be so knowledgeable (usually they arent as up to date on the starting xi) As for hummels, he isnt there because of sporting reasons. In march nagelsmann said he thouight somethign in the team was developing (a team spirit) and he didnt want to disturb that. Additionally you have to know that hummels has a reputation in germany for being very vocal if he doesnt like how he is being treated. Just before the CL final for example he had a interview where he directly criticized terzic and now terzic has resigned. Same reason why someone like goretzka never stood a chance of being nominated. Realistically, schlotterbeck should start, but he doesnt for the same reason. Nagelsmann does not want to disturb the team spirit which is also why gündogan isnt being dropped in favor of sane. As for mittelstädt, i think youre underrating him, hes been a top 3 LB (statistically) this season.

Mittlestadt is for sure impressive statistically and even eye test wise I was a fan - much better player than Raum IMO but defensively I saw that whilst he was tenacious and good at interceptions he can be got at 1 v 1. Don’t think he’s been tested massively in his career to date.

Disagree with the wingers, Leroy Sané played a weak second half of the season, altough he had one or two good performances in the CL knockouts. And you forgot to mention Chris Führich. He had his breakout season being one of the mistakes important players for Stuttgart, which finished second in the Bundesliga.

Thanks for the video. I agree with starting Fullkrug, even though I rate havertz more. Because international football relies a lot on set pieces and pure goal scoring I think that more cultured center forwards like Havertz, might have troubles producing. Even then, I don't think havertz will have a bad tournament if he starts, I just think that you will see Fullkrug come on and score a clutch goal from a set piece

Great video as always! I was honestly surprised by the omission of Hummels. I think he gives the team both the leadership, the tenacity, along with exceptional on the ball capabilities. Surely he adds to the dressing room as much as he does to the pitch. Before the announcement, I was leaning towards a 343 setup with Tah, Hummels and Rudiger as the backline Schlotterbeck, Kroos, Andrich/Gundo and Kimmich, along with a front three of Musiala, Sane and Fulkrug. I had the impression that this would be good to cover for the ageing legs of Gundo+Kroos. However, your preferred line-up seems to what I'd want to see as well based on the current squad.

I would say that Chris Fuhrich primarily operates as a winger as well. Also I really do believe that Benny Heinrichs would need to come in for Kimmich when it's time to square off against top notch opposition wingers on the right flank.

Great video. I've got a few things to add from a German's perspective. Hummels has probably been the best cb in the UCL this season, however, Nagelsmann's high press relies very much on the cb's to press aggressively and cover a lot of ground defensively if the press is outplayed (and Hummels definitely lacks the athleticism to fill that role). In addition, the focus in the second phase, especially against teams who defend in a low block, is to overload the middle of the field in a way similar to what Xabi Alonso did at Leverkusen with Wirtz and Musiala inverting an creating a numerical advantage and short passing options in tight spaces. Therefore, the CBs are mainly tasked with playing simple, short passes into the middle of the field, hence their general quality on the ball is less of an issue. Sane was injured at the end of the season and recovered just in time, will probably start at some point in the tournnament (At least i hope so). Führich is a really good player, someone who can go both ways in 1v1 situations and should be able to contribute as well.

@@PythagorasinBoots Certainly. I could even imagine Schlotterbeck and Hummels would add a great deal against teams like Scotland and Hungary by adding another line breaking option in posession. But i believe Nagelsmann has a very proactive approach to defending (i.e. possesion, keeping the ball away from your goal, high pressing), so in that light, it makes sense to exclude Hummels.

All big reporters are saying that he would go to another club this window if Real don’t come in, therefore I’d back us to land him over the others. Pundits were wondering if Scotland were so bad or Germany were quite so good. I think Scotland were low quality individually and their set up probably should have been more reserved with 2 DMs in front of the defense against a team like Germany. In any case, Germany imho look relatively solid across Attack, Midfield and Defense in all honesty. Good players and good system and good link-up of the players as a team during live play. That last bit always seems to elude England for some reason at national level? Agree, Havertz is really about the system eg pressing strong, and impact striker later on which looked the case in the above game. Irrespective they look like they can put enough pressure on the box and low block here. Only real weakness is as you say DM zone is going to be a bit exposed without a player in their squad who specializes here. Tbh I'm always happy to see Germany stronger because they play some very good football and above all else even who wins, imo, that's the best result for the tournament with more good teams and memorable moments and matches.

Scotland did play with a reckless strategy. Zero control in midfield but playing too high up the pitch but with defence not too close to the mid leaving gaps. Was awful. Germany were nevertheless excellent.

sorry, but did you record this half a year ago? i'm a fan of leroy sané at his best, and i'm glad he's in the squad, but this "great form" you're talking about was exactly ONE game against arsenal, while the rest of his second half of the season was pretty damn underwhelming. his pace and skill always make him a threat when he's in the right headspace, but the latter is crucial, otherwise he'll just be a defensive liability moping around the pitch. regarding kimmich, my main concern is not his defensive prowess (although lately he's indeed too careless in possession at times) but rather his lack of mobility for his current role. he'd be a good rb in a team playing with dedicated wingers, but as a rwb his main issue is getting back into position, while at the same time not really offering too much offensively in terms of taking on opposite defenders. imo he's simply the wrong pick for nagelsmann's system, even though i understand the inclination to put him into the team based past merits and general ability. also, it's not like we have any exciting alternatives. i also think hummels deserved a spot in the team, and i'd also pick ter stegen over neuer (particularly after neuer's recent howlers) and füllkrug over havertz, but i'd stick with gündogan in cam for now, hoping he can re-create his 22-23 city performances, and i'd also pick tah over schlotterbeck for his physical presence defending set pieces and his speed helping to defend the inevitable counter attacks we just can't seem to prevent...

Great vid. I think I’d personally prefer Havertz up front to Fulkrug. Havertz has had a great season and bagged double digits for Arsenal this season, he’s a natural false 9 and can provide with box presence due to his height or big frame. I’ve seen Fulkrig waste o lot of chances for Dortmund too. Speaking of Dortmund, just can’t wrap my head around the decision to leave Hummels out. I’m guessing it’s political.

The decision to leave hummels out has to do with his role in the squad. He would be a bench player but according to nagelsmann characterwise bad for the dressing room. If he selects him he's got to start Nagelsmann according to Hummels himself questions his athleticism The squad overall is good I like mittelstädt defensivly and off better than Raum but defensivly dont trust him 100% Tah on the ball was not good against greece first half Wirtz and musiala surprsingly do a lot of defensive work helping the fullbacks Beier,Führich,Sane are good options off the bench A shame the pavlovic is out due to tonsolitis Havertz is good player in knockout games i trust fullkrug more Hopefully semis Im german thats why i know this detailed

I agree with you most of the time, but that Gross and Milner comparaison is horrendous ! Just shows how underrated Gross is.
