Germany vs Austria: Christop Waltz on the difference between Austrians and Germans

Hollywood actor Christop Waltz, star of Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained, explains the difference between Austrians and Germans.
Although the interview is slightly tongue-in-cheek, Waltz is well qualified to make the comparison. He was born in Vienna, the product of a German-born father, Johannes Waltz, and Austrian-born mother, Elisabeth Urbancic, who were set and costume designers.
As for St Martin Chalets, we love both Austrians AND Germans. We have many visitors from both countries every year, and we would find it very difficult to make a comparison. Honest! :)

This is an old German tale.. A German baby is born and he grows up not speaking, the parents try to get him to speak but he never does... until one day when he is about 13 they eat dinner as usual and the boy comments "the dinner was cold tonight" the mother surprised that he is finally speaking asks "why haven;t you been speaking until now? and the boy answers "because up until now everything was adequate".

Ive travelled all around the US for years in various way and have live in many states, I have also been to many other countries when I was in the military. Supposedly about 40% of the adult American population is "obese" but when you go out to most towns you do not see about 40% of adults being obese. I think the numbers are inflated to nip it in the bud before it becomes more of a problem, that's a typical American strategy, overexxagetating the domestic negative to mitigate an approaching problem (most people aren't discerning enough to realize that that is what the US does)

You all realise that germany hasn`t been independent since ww2 and is very likely still occupied and being genocided? Just take a closer look at what has been done to the germans&germany. The winner writes the history that doesn`t make it right.
@mrd7067
@mrd7067 4 жыл бұрын
@ I`m not affiliated with any political party or ideology. It`s a genocide according to the UN genocide convention and things that happened in germany 1945 < also qualify for that. You can`t occupy a country and then flood it with people who won the war. It even started before the last normal prisoners of war were let free. Extermination to germans has been done to the end of both world wars and germanophobia was a word in english literature before all the other phobias were a thing. It`s also quite interesting how the "denazification" has been done and its incorporation into NATO & "the west". If your suggestion would have been followed things been done and happening would be way more obvious. It`s worse now than your suggestion. There are also reasons why things are blacked out and historic & archeological research is prohibited in regards to certain things and "the truth" is dogmatic.

Then the guy said "Oh yes history. Great, it was also my favourite subject" I was happy and began to talk to him about history only to realize that he didn't know anything about it. He didn't even know when WW1 and 2 started. I feel like it is a lot more difficult to have serious conversations in the USA.

It's easier to distinguish the english speaking ethnicities/regionalism apart because of how unique their accents and cultures are. Scots are mostly of Pictish Celt origin who were all highlanders and marsh walkers. The Irish are Gaelic Celts with Viking ancestry. The English are proto-germanic Anglo-Saxon tribals who got conquered by Romans and then French Vikings(Normans), who then got conquered by Danish Vikings. So much of the British Culture is unique to each other that even outsiders can tell them apart.

@@Dovakhin94 I did say English speaking natives are easier to tell apart because of their accent and choice of words. That's what is unique about Anglophone culture, the accents are a dead giveaway and anyone who has an inkling of understanding how the language works would easily detect the difference. The Austrian/German dialect split is very similar to many other countries that have the same cultural roots. Examples are the Scandinavian countries whom most do not understand each other with the youngest country ironically enough is the only one who retained the "Original" way the Vikings spoke which is Icelandic. My homecountry in Southeast Asia is a mix of Indonesian and Malaysian culture/language yet I can barely understand either one, even within my own country there are 111 dialects all of which are variants of the Indo-Malayan language and I can only speak ONE which is the national language.

This was in contrast with another professor I met who grew up in West Germany during the same time period, great sense of humor and always made her classes fun, and was also just as kind. But anyway I found it quite interesting the differences between the two, both were good professors, but with radically different personalities.

As an Irishman who's lived in Frankfurt and Linz I definitely found the Austrians more interesting. There's a beer garden called Schweizerhaus in Vienna that I would visited during celebrations and festivals and I really felt at home. Pure silliness, folk music, plenty of beer and non stop laughter. It was actually better than Ireland in the most part. The biggest difference between ireland and Austria is the Irish don't really except the finer things in life, we're usually happy to settle for unhappy what we have, the Austrians will not settle for anything less than divine. That goes from their morning coffee, the wine they drink and the cigarettes they smoke.

It has a lot to do with the way the German language works compared to English. In German we tend to be more direct the closer we feel to a person. In English, no matter how close you feel to a person, you will always use a more indirect phrase as it is considered as polite. So in English you may use "Would you mind giving me xyz?" no matter who you are talking to. In German you can (and probably will) do the same to a person which you have a certain emotional distance from: "Würde es Ihnen etwas ausmachen, mir xyz zu geben?" But if we feel closer to a person we not only may switch from "sie" to "du" (in English there is only "you"), we also tend to be more and more direct: "Kannst du mir mal xyz geben?" (Can you give me ...) up to "Gib mir (mal) bitte xyz." ("Please give me xyz."). In English this is regarded as very rude, in German it is not. As you tend to use characteristics of your mother tongue in foreign languages and "Please give me" requires less English skills as "Would you mind giving me", English speaking people often regard Germans as unpolite or rude. Not to mention that most people have the German stereotype from cinema / TV (Nazi, Lederhosen, shouting) in their mind and hardly even know any "real" Germans.

suprisingly, german and russian are very VERY similar in their sense of gallows humour. Had seen a coallagues of mine (a russian and a german) banter and laugh together about warring in winters. boy, I laugh in terror watching them...

Life in Germany was tough back in the day. Germans didn't have the luxuries of investing time in the arts and theater , it was only until the late 1700s and 1800s that Germans tried to compete with their contemporaries in the Arts and it miserably failed, but FAUST was the only thing to come about(in Anglo POV). Prior to that, Germans had to dedicate themselves to WAR and strategy because guess what? Germany is in the middle of EUROPE , its geography positions it to be invaded and sacked from both east and west. England had the luxury to play around with theater and learn from the Greeks and French because of its NAVY and its isolation from Europe. I would say that Arabs aren't known for their comedy too. I don't know too much about German comedians other than Martina Hill and the little stand up i've seen from modern comedians isn't that funny. It's not the languge, its just the German point of view is sort of bland and boring like AMERICAN SUBURBAN comedians. But when German comedy is good , it's very dark and dada esque ... I like HGich.T , but to most Americans its totally out there and weird.
