Native American History

8 ай бұрын

Geronimo is probably the most famous Apache chief and one of the most known Native Americans in history.
Born as Goyahkla (“The One Who Yawns”), he was part of the Bedonkohe band of the Chiricahua Apache tribe. Geronimo is best known for leading Apache resistance and wars against Mexico and the United States.
He was a medicine man and a warrior.
The history of the Apache tribes is a complicated one. They are Native American people who lived in the American southwest and Mexican north.

Geronimo gets alot of praise for his warrior abilities, but he left my great great great grandfather Victorio hanging in Tres Castillos. This is the battle Terazzas killed Victorio, Geronimo ran when Bi-duye commanded all warriors to fight so the women and children could escape. I know my history very well and many Chiricahua in prison had bitter feelings towards him, i grew up with Geronimo's great grandsons, 7 of them here in Mescalero Apache reservation. I am a great great great grandson of Warm Springs Chiricahua Apache chief's Victorio, Mangas Coloradas, and Loco. I am also a great great grandson of Chiricahua Apache US Scouts Charles Martine Sr and Paul Guydelkon Sr. My grandmother Evelyn Martine was the last Chiricahua Apache born as a US prisoner of war in Ft Sill, Oklahoma in 1912.

@karieanne25 I have been contemplating the wisdom and many stories told by my great grandfather George Martine who along with his wife Lillian Mangas were prisoners of war. Lillian passed in 1935 leaving my grandmother Evelyn the matriarch. My mother is the last full blood Warm Springs Chiricahua Apache in our line. Her parents were cousins both being descended from Mangas Coloradas, Evelyn from Carl Mangas and grandpa Ashley Guydelkon from Seth Mooda. Carl and Seth were sons of Mangas Coloradas.

The predators in America's culture that preyed upon the Apache, & other tribes, were the most despicable form of humanity. Geronimo never should have surrendered. He should have kept fighting until killed. Geronimo was right. The US government did not negotiate in good faith. And had no intent to honor the treaties. The US government today is no better.

The history of Native Americans after the arrival Europeans is tragic. They were an ancient culture, having lived here for thousands upon thousands of years. But, once the white man and his Manifest Destiny philosophy decided to “tame” them, they were wiped out in a few number of years. Thank you for this video.

I'm Mexican, and my family in Mexico, occasionally talk about the hard time the Mexican government gave to the Apache and the Yaquis. Mexican president and government, until recently, was a puppet for the USA. However one of the first things the current president of Mexico did, was apologize to the Natives for any harm and injustice in the past. It doesn't make it disapear, but noble grace from a Nation's leader, helps to go forward.

Gerónimo was not born in Arizona, that is a lie, he was born in the town of Arizpe state of Sonora México. My parents hometown near Chihuahua city was basically whipped out by an Apache raid. The Mexican army did in fact kill Gerónimo's family, but the US army almost erased that tribe from their land never keeping ANY of thf so called treaties as they did with most other native American tribes, relegating them to so called "reservations" were they still to this date live in very poor conditions and robbed of their land and most of their heritage and pride. US historians always blame "others" for their evil deeds, even to this date, we all know how they do it. Many brave Apache scouts that served the US army for years and others were at the end sent to Florida, effectively getting them out of the way for full invasion land grabs destruction of their hunting grounds by slaughtering millions of bisons, main staple of Indian survival. If you are going to tell a story tell it straightforward honestly and above all truthfully.
