Hi Tatiana. I'm glad this was useful for teachers as well. I think one way to approach this in the classroom is to use only 4 verbs to model the chosen activity. Ask them to help sort those four and then as a class either create a story or ask students to suggest questions to ask their partners. Then give them a larger list of verbs, maybe 10 to sort and then work with in pairs or small groups. As you saw, students may form correct sentences with nouns or noun clauses, but they need to use gerunds or infinitives. So sometimes partners will have to correct or rephrase a statement so it follows the pattern. Happy teaching!

Hee hee. Yes, I called on my kids to partner me in the activities. Since they're still home on summer vacation, they were available! By the way, I had to correct their choices a couple of times. As for me, I forgot to use gerunds sometimes. I used a noun clause here and there. It's good to have a partner to remind you what the rules are. ;)

Great video one of those topics that confuse learners.My students find it hard to choose between gerund and infinitive when it comes to some verbs like stop, regret, try, forget and remember.But they get it after giving them my tricks.

Hi Jennifer! Very interesting class. Task A: Last year I arranged to go on vacation and managed to book two tickets to go on a ship to Europe. My traveling partner didn`t agree to rent a car when we got there.He threatened to get back to America and then I recalled passing through the same situation two years ago with the same person. Task B: Continuation of the story: The King persuaded the jugglers to take a course for telling jokes. The jugglers`professor taught them to tell jokes meanwhile they were juggling. Everyday the professor assisted the jugglers with their manners and convinced them to be amusing and funny. In the end the King found the jugglers`presentation entertaining and never got bored anymore

Wonderful job, Susana! Notes: You might call that person in Task A your travel companion. Better to say, "He threatened to go back to America." In Task B, you can use "while" instead of "meanwhile." I like how the jugglers found a way to cure the king of boredom!

Hi Jennifer, as usual, you are doing a good job. :-) Here is my attempt to complete your Task A and Task B. Task A: 1. Recall I hope I forget on my homework for today. For sure, I recall making the task in my head. 2. Arrange I arrange to meet with husbands parents this evening. 3. Manage I hope I manage to do the Math exam. 4. Agree I agree to go playing soccer in the afternoon. 5. Threaten Parents threaten to take my laptop in case I don´t do the exam. Task B: My friend John likes traveling. He persuaded me to travel around the world, and he teached me to speak another language. During our trip in Africa, he assisted me to explore new places there. At finally, John convinced me to see very interesting places which I´ve never seen before. It was very good experience for me.

Happy to see you studying so actively. :) Task A: 1. It would be more logical to say, "I hope I don't forget to do my homework today." or "I hope I don't forget to turn in my homework." (That last one means you want to give the teacher your homework.) 2. Correction: I've arranged to meet with my husband's parents this evening. 3. Good! 4. Note: Don't use the GO + gerund pattern with sports. I agreed to go play soccer in the afternoon. 5. Correction: My parents threatened to take my laptop if I don't study for the exam/ if I don't pass the exam. Task B: Good!Some corrections: ...and he taught me to speak... During our trip, he assisted me to explore new places. Finally, John convinced me to see very interesting places which I'd never seen before. It was a very good experience for me.

That's a great lesson as always; a tough lesson though. I have a question that I 've asked a lot of online teachers but didn't get any answer. I've learned about bare infinitive but how would I recognise if it is a bare infinitive.

Infinitives can be subject, but it's less common in everyday English. A gerund sounds more natural in that context: Cooking is my favorite hobby. You can say, "I like to cook. It's my favorite hobby." In everyday English, using the infinitive or gerund after LIKE and LOVE is common.

COST and PRICE are similar. I usually associate "price" with a price tag. We see price tags on clothes, boxes of cereal, shoes, etc. We look at the price and we know how much is costs. - - Remember that "cost" is often used as a noun and a verb. We can talk about the cost of a college education or the cost of living in a particular city. We don't use "price" in that context. BTW - These are the kinds of questions I could address in a live stream for members. I'd not only explain, but I'd also create a practice task to help you understand. :)

Sentence --> Infinitives are the easiest verbals to learn. 'verbals' = predicate noun 'to learn' is infinitive. What is the role played by it ? Is it modifying the word 'verbals' or 'easiest' ?

SVCC subject = infinitives verb = are subject complement = the easiest verbals noun complement = to learn It's like saying: Here's something [to think about]. / There's a lot [to learn]. / There's always something [to learn].

Ma'am, can we use "loving" as a gerund in a sentence? If I say that you take loving(Object) We know that we use gerund Object of a veb.

Yes, "loving" can be a gerund: Loving you is so easy to do! (gerund as subject) The gerund refers to the act or process of giving love (emotionally). As an object in your example, it makes sense to use "love." A process might take or require love. Someone can need/require a lot of love.

Hi, Dear teacher, I came across with this sentence on a book I'm not quite sure why they don't use Ing(gerund or an Infinitive here) "I love to start work on new things that are close to our hearts" . So my question or doubt is: why don't use start WORKING /TO WORK? why WORK? thanks in advance for your explanation .

Hi. Perhaps the writer was thinking of "work" as a noun here. "Work" can be the projects and tasks we do.

Dear Jennifer, I am planning a class and I will use your ideas! I have a doubt! If I say: I admit the desire to join a circus this week...There I can change the tense right? Because when you say: "I admit having the desire to join a circus." this tense in your examples is followed by the next sentence that your daughter gave.."I considered trying out.."(past)..So, in you context you are mixing the tenses, but in my context I can use them just in present right? :)

Hi Giselle. Ideally, you want to stay in the same time frame if you're telling a story, but there are times when I focus on the target grammar and let other grammar points go. You can always rephrase a student's statement for greater accuracy, but the goal here is to have enough clarity so the story makes sense and be certain the right choices are made regarding gerunds and infinitives.

Another good tip with 'to' is to remember that many English sentences are made up with 'to + an infinitive' Here are some examples: I like to shop. i know how to do it. I like to learn.To confuse everyone further, 'to' works with gerunds also: I agree to working hard to achieve personal goals. 'To' is also a preposition, which will undoubtedly confuse your students even further. Here is an example of 'to' as a preposition:: I gave some silly answers to Jennifer when working out how many phrases I was using in a sentence. I am still annoyed at myself for those silly answers by the way. I hope no one remembers that howling error of mine in a phrases and conditional lesson from Jennifer. If they do, I must relay to them that I was only joking and knew the correct answer all along...Hopefully they will buy that. I doubt it though.

It's also confusing to hear words used in different patterns. I've been noting things like "chip in" being a phrasal verb, but also a noun + preposition, as in "a chip in a credit card." Context is everything! Don't worry about past grammar mistakes. Learn from them and move on. :) I catch myself making small ones here and there, especially when I'm talking fast. At least I spot them...eventually! Hee hee.

JenniferESL Very true, Jennifer. It's so easy to get mixed up as the words take on different roles. For example: A verb can act as a noun and a gerund isn't a gerund when acting as a progressive verb in part of a verbal phrase. Many other confusing areas could also be listed as you know. How the word is used in a sentence is key to understanding what part it is playing. Do you remember my total confusion when I had to decipher how many phrases I used in a sentence? I was getting my compliments and agents all in a muddle. It's not an area of English I am totally expert on. In fact, more lessons on compliments and agents would be very welcome, Jennifer. Thank you :>)

The home(Non doer) needs to be painted ( Passive of infinitive ,Both grammatically and sense are passive) / The Home needs to paint(Active of infinitive, only sense is passive) 2. Correct: The home needs to be painted. The home needs painting. (I'd use "house" to emphasize the building, by the way.) NEEDS in this sense can be followed by a passive infinitive or a gerund. These are two patterns you must follow. You can't use a passive gerund. The painting is done to the house, but the idea is about what the house requires. You can use other transitive verbs and avoid passive infinitives or gerunds. The meaning is the same: The house requires a good paint job. Hope that helps.

I get your point to use "houe" instead of home and to use transitive verb (Di transitive and mono transitive verb) in the sentences, and regards passive infinitive , The house needs being painted. Why it is grammatically wrong ,however, need is main verb,and being painted non finite verb (like to be painted). i believe there is a reason for wrong this pattern. Hello mam, I can't get this infinitive phrase ( and to emphasise the unique features of specific locations. ) in the middle of sentence with coordinating conjunction. I don't understand the connection of this phrase with sentence. if it is compound predicate then why is second verb missing? Ex: Such religions tended to be very local in outlook , and to emphasise the unique features of specific locations , climates and phenomena.

You need to work. SVO subject = you verb = need object = to work Infinitives can be objects of verbs. "In order to finish" can be shorted to "to finish" and that would be an infinitive of purpose. That functions like an adverb giving a reason.

I simply couldn't recall giving Carrie the keys to my house and neither could she. She was about to come and visit me at the weekend. I told her that I wouldn't be able to pick her up, so she had to manage to get to my place somehow. I had already arranged for Carrie to get a taxi, but we both agreed, that it would be better if someone I knew had picked her up and give her the keys. I heard about a taxi driver who threatened to kill the passenger recently.

I suppose it's better to err on the side of a caution, as they say, (in other words, exercising some caution is usually a good thing). :) I hope Carrie was able to get to the house okay! Unfortunately, a group of cats🐈🐈 smelt them and came near us. They threatened us to leave the sandwiches for them. I threw a piece of the chickens to them. They run towards this piece. They threatened to attack because they want us to leave the sandwiches for them. I threw a piece of the chicken to them. They ran towards that piece. At that moment, we ran away from them.
