Background music is just that, most people don't care what the music is as long as its pleasing and provides that special atmosphere. You can just sit there and improvise for 4 hours and people still love it! If there's a nice grand to play on then it's even easier to get away with playing random stuff as it sounds that much better/richer/ambient.

Depends on the gig. People are more knowledgeable than you think. I know musicians that "comforted" themselves with the idea that no one in the audience cares. Those gigs don't pay as well and you don't get as many new gigs and referrals. Besides, tunes are fun to learn and know. Anything offered in the lessons here will facilitate learning more tunes.

Nice trick - it's really a I-vi-ii-V but the F6 is a Dm7 in first inversion, and the Gm6 is a C9 in second inversion. So this makes it really simple!

Great stuff ! I'm only 2 minutes in but I'm surprised that you went for F6 and Gm6 instead of Dm7 and C9 (rootless) or C7(9) (rootless). I know it's to avoid confusion, to play root voiced chords but it could create more confusion overall, as the student maybe won't figure out the V IV II V progression, and he will maybe think that this this progression is based off two chords instead of four blabla etc. Unless you mention it later on then sorry ahah :)

I’d say, simplify. Maybe restrict yourself to two right hand notes for a couple of choruses, and try to create little motifs that you use and reuse. Let your ear discover how your motif sounds over which chords. Add another note, and enjoy discovering new sounds, and so on. Definitely don’t just run up and down the scale mechanically.

Awesome lesson. One Question. While playing you use A flat and D flat almost exclusively as slide or grace notes. But you introduced the scale as 6-tone scale with A flat. Isn't it more like a pentatonic scale with two grace notes, A flat and D flat? Sounds a little petty, I'm just interested
@pianopatterns2440
@pianopatterns2440 4 жыл бұрын
It's a pentatonic scale with an added "blues" note, the flattened third, for a total of six notes. Any other note would be a grace note to slide to the note above or below it. The scale notes for the key of F are *F, G, Ab, A, C, D.* Notice that the Ab is actually part of the scale, but Db is not.

When I do the exercise I'm OK. But when I play it falls apart and sounds nothing like jonny. The gap between the practice and the improvisation is too big for me. This is my 3rd attempt at one of your lessons. I have not been able to put any of the lessons to be able to play anything. Shame because I really want to learn. So frustrated. When I improvise it sounds horrible.

@pianopatterns2440
@pianopatterns2440 4 жыл бұрын
A scale is defined by the distances between each of the notes. Many piano teachers demonstrate scales and chords in the key of C because that key is the most familiar to students. Once you learn the scale in the key of C you can transpose it to any other key by keeping the distance between the notes the same. Count the distance between the piano keys. It doesn't matter if the key is black or white, if the two keys are next to each other, the distance is one, if there is a key between them, the distance is two, if there are two keys between, the distance is three, etc.
