If you're wondering how to get a job on a yacht, you might be thinking that doing lots of yacht crew courses is the answer. However, when it comes to yachting jobs for beginners, heads of department know that they're going to have to train you up, so they're not expecting you to come as the complete package. Getting a job on a yacht is therefore more about demonstrating that you have the right qualities.
In this video, I share the top 5 green yacht crew qualities that I think will give you the greatest chance of success, and then I explain how to demonstrate you have them through the use of a well-written yachting CV.
0:00 Introduction
0:34 Having a bit of Nous
2:27 Presentable
3:31 Affable
4:33 Strong work ethic
5:07 Able to take instruction
7:08 Demonstrating these qualities with your CV
9:43 More courses aren't the answer

@@WorkonaSuperyacht Yeah, iam got a First Mate position in a 30m, with a Captain that gives me a lot of driving time.Honestly, you help me a lot with your videos. Now im 41, was very worried about my age, since i started in yachting with 38, but realized that you can a find a yacht that suits your personality , as long as you are hard worker and have a good attitude. Looking forward my OOW3000, or take a Captain position in a smaller boat in the future. Cheers!

Some great advice for new starts there and a few bits had me chuckling. While my background is mainly commercial there are many simililarities. I think that many people underestimate the challenges of working and living with with a group of others in a restricted space while often working long hours. Tolerance of others, a calm head and a good sense of humour go a long way. Looking forward to your next video.

Good to see another video of yours Matthew. My take on this is, the ability to display these qualities in person and the ability to demonstrate these qualities on paper by providing examples in a professional manner. I think this is common sense and applies to all employment opportunities. Hope all is well with you Matthew!

I've seen CV's with all the 'bubble' boxes, in candy pink, yellow and green with hand drawn anchors, seagulls, and a palm tree island. With the first line being 'My name is XXCC' and I love the ocean. The ocean is my happy place and I was born in the the ocean and swim in it daily, sometimes nude, but will wear a swimsuit when required. The ocean regenerates my spirit and soul. I am a descendant of mermaids.' And it was scented. That CV became a running joke on the yacht I was on and others. We did find out that her dad ran a barebones charter service in St. Kitts anc she worked on the boats there, but she was persistent about moving to big yachts. I think a sailing yacht hired her. But whenever we would be beat down from a charter and ask ourselves 'Why are we doing this?' Someone would quote that CV for a laugh. Don't copy this lady people. Use a service or look it up.

Are there any other european ports other than Antibes that are good for dock walking? The italian coast has amazing marinas with a lot of berths fit for superyachts, would it be worth trying my luck there? I've also seen a few say that its best to book one crew house for however long your budget allows and dock walk the local marinas, but what if you intend to travel further afield? Thanks!

Hello Matthew. Great videos and I really like them! I will look for an entry level deckhand position in the med season 2024. I have a request for the next video you are going to make about courses. I do read a lot of job offers on Yachtspot for deckies and I often see requirements from the yacht that they want Yachtmaster certificate. Why do I need this and not just pb2? And they often write "This boat has a busy program or This boat has a great program for employees" What do they mean about that? Best Regards from a really green greeeny Keep on doing the good work!!!!!!!!

Best advice is to READ what you have written before pressing the submit button, it might be why you are still looking for a job, perhaps? One never has a second chance at making a first impression.

The main thing is to ensure that you're demonstrating you have each of these qualities. And @SpamMouse makes an important point. It's very easy to sign up for accounts with all the agencies, but you should take the time to fill out your profile as well as possible. And when it comes to applying for jobs on sites like Yotspot, take care to write a small cover letter that directly acknowledges what they are looking for, and how you fulfil the requirements. As with most things, a lot of it is just about determination and sticking with it. Keep trying, and that first opportunity should eventually appear.

Hi Matthew! Thanks for putting out this video, I really appreciate your content. I wanted to ask when you thought is the best time for green crew to go to dock walking and looking for work. I went to Antibes last year around late March and left early May. Unfortunately, I didn't have the funds to continue the search and came back to Australia. Thanks again and hope you're having a good summer

@@WorkonaSuperyacht Yes! I can't go this season but am building up my CV with local work here in Australia. It's not superyacht work but more boating (shipyard, party boat charters etc) and also some lifeguard work. Thanks for all of your previous videos as well, they definitely helped in my preparation for last year and I would've been in a much worse situation without your content. I still feel confident that I can make my entry into the superyachts

Hey im just starting on my course's then going to try get some day work i know it the wrong time in the year but would it still be worth doing some dock walking for day work or any. Also im from the uk going to Gibraltar.
@WorkonaSuperyacht
@WorkonaSuperyacht 8 ай бұрын
I wouldn't make a special trip to Gibraltar to go dock walking, but if you live there then it's a good place to start. Around this time of year, a lot of yachts will stop there for fuel before crossing the Atlantic, but they don't normally stay for long and don't usually require any day workers. They are also normally fully crewed, having taken care of recruiting for the Caribbean season during the month of October.

*To summarize the video in my understanding:* 1) Don't day dream on duty. Be rather PROactive than POSTactive. 2) Take care of yourself. You might be a great person on the inside, but outside matters too. 3) Be flexible and easy to interact with. 4) Things that need to be done, have to be done the best possible way regardless how you feel or what time it is. 5) Do what you are asked to do in *A WAY YOU ARE TOLD TO DO* . Even if you did something in a way that is objectively better than the way you were told to do it, your boss might not like it. That can make them feel that you are "not respecting them, "not being a team player, "can't follow instructions", "being deviant" even if did not mean any harm. *control your EGO* . 6) _CV is kinda hard for me personally_ . You don't want to shake the air with words about how great you are, but rather what can you bring to the table and how can you be a good asset for the team. 7) _Depending on the course of course_ . Your courses doesn't really matter, what matter is your competence and experience and how are you *delivering them through the CV* . 8) *Go get that job.* Have your CV with you. Talk to agents, go to agencies, go to docks, meet the crews. I watched a couple of your videos that were released 2-3 years ago and it's crazy how you seem more mature, self-controlled and well-spoken in this video.😮 I got to learn about yachting industry during a chill evening at my friends place and we were of course watching Below Deck. In total I've worked for 2 years in a coffee house industry, and 2 years in a restaurant industry. I now study computer science but still work part-time in a restaurant as a shift manager. There was so many things that I could relate to in the show, hospitality has to be top notch regardless how guests are, all the dirty work, working looooong hours (I've worked many shifts that were 12-16h long, some were even unpaid, cause I did it for the team), flexibilty, soft skills. team forming, ego checks,. And I thought "damn, wouldn't it be cool to work as a deckhand during the summer breaks, I literally did all those things, but on land". So here I am watching your videos to learn how to get started. *Great content, keep them videos coming.* 🖖

Do most yachts require clean shaving? Short hair? Minimal to no jewelry?
@WorkonaSuperyacht
@WorkonaSuperyacht 4 ай бұрын
Most yachts do, but not all. It also depends on what is happening on board, and the crew member in question. During a shipyard period in the middle of winter, it is more likely for facial hair to be acceptable. Equally, facial hair for a chief engineer is likely to be more acceptable than for a junior deckhand. My advice is to start clean shaven, and with short and tidy hair. That will make you acceptable to the largest number of yachts. Once you get on board a yacht you can adjust accordingly. In terms of jewellery, simple earrings are likely to cause no issue. But multiple ear piercings, nose rings, and stretched ear lobes could put some yachts off. Again, it depends on the yacht, but to appeal to the largest number of yachts you'll want to keep piercings to a minimum.

@WorkonaSuperyacht thanks for the reply, I will probably only work on a yacht under special circumstances.. I have stretched ears and long hair with dreadlocks.. and I already work on a boat in a nice destination. It's good to know these things before I decide to work yachts 😎🤙
