Failed all my classes my freshman year, even got dropped because of my attendance. Sophomore year was laughable, once you miss school so often and you fall so far behind, you feel like a failure. You don't want to go to school anymore, but the only reason you do, is because your parents force you. It wasn't until I had the self realization that I wanted to be successful, that I took school more seriously. I was homeless during this time, so I would get up at 4am and take the bus/max across town, just to get to my classes. Even if I was late, and stood outside that door with the feeling of anxiousness, I would force myself to go in. I was good at sports, but didn't want to pursue football, so my coaches didn't invest a lot of time in me. I ended up sitting down with my head coach and gave him my spill, and he actually ended up mentoring me up until my senior year. I made connections with my principal and concelour, and once the time to apply for colleges came around, I applied everywhere. I was rejected from every single university. I felt like giving up. My mentor ended up telling me about this wonderful scholarship that would give the winner a full ride to any college of their choice. I felt like my odds were impossible as I didn't have the grades to back me up, but even so, I poured my heart into all those questions. I made a video, and did the best I could . Time went by, and I assumed I wasn't even a finalist. No words from anyone. It wasn't until last month that I was invited for an interview that would help them get a better idea of whom I was. I went, not expecting anything. I was wrong. They had cameras everywhere, and once they called my name and showed me that box, I burst into tears. I had finally gotten a break. I was awarded the scholarship. I went home that day feeling accomplished but very anxious, as no universitys accepted me. I cried all night, as I felt that I was the embodiment of a person who would have the opportunity but not be able to take it. I woke up the next morning and spent days appealing all of my previous decisions. After weeks had gone by, I was hit with non-surprising words of ”we are sorry to inform you” or ”try community college”. I felt like I was back to square one. All I wanted was another chance... A chance to prove myself. I contacted the university I wanted to attend the most and asked for a third appeal. They declined. I then went in person, talked to the head of admissions, and he allowed me to get another try. I filled that appeal with everything I had; a reference from my coaches, principal, and counselors. I also sent a very long essay about why I wanted to attend. Just last week, after feeling like id be a nobody, I got the letter in the mail. I was accepted. I will be attending Western Oregon University next fall, and I'm proud of myself. The moral is to just keep trying. I may have surpassed odds that may not be likely for everyone, but if you're in the same position, don't give up. College is always a possibility. I'll never allow this second chance to be taken for granted. I known didn't have to write all this, but I just wanted to tell my story. Maybe it'll help another kid that's in the same predicament.

I am a 18 year old junior in high school and didn't take my sophomore and freshman year serioulsly, so I have like a 2.3, I have one quater of junior year left and my goal is to get straight A's and I know I can do it , I just need to get out of the habbit of being lazy , but my point is HOW CAN I GET IN A GREAT UNIVERSITY LIKE YOU DID! , I could really use your advice , sometimes I think my life is over because I fooled around and messed it up , I wish I could go back and change everything , I should have listened to the ones who told me to work hard in school but now I'm stuck and don't know what to do !!!

I have depression and extreme social anxiety and it's severely affecting my grades. I got Cs, Ds and Fs my first 2 years of high school and as a junior with Ds and Fs I'm doing even worse. I know that junior year is the most important year in high school. I'm not taking any AP or honors classes and still failing and honestly I don't know what to do! I honestly feel like I've ruined my life. I know people say "Oh don't worry you can turn your life around if you apply yourself!" But I've heard so many horror stories about adults who didn't do well in high school and tried so hard to turn their lives around and still failed. I know this is extreme but seriously I feel like killing myself because a life working at Walmart is not worth living. I have a semester of junior year left and then senior year. I failed all my 9th grade classes, that being 15 classes total, D is still failing..Prior to that I had gotten kicked out of middle school, I was getting in trouble with the law, I was on probation & smoking & being a rebel. Anyways sophomore year I had a 3.0, joined track( Ironic right?) & AVID. I kept looking back at my freshmen year & came to conclude that because of those really bad grades & all the other stuff, I wouldn't stand a chance in making it into a university. Therefore I was debating whether to leave my high school & go into a continuation school( It's a school where you get to graduate early, very easy work) but if I were to go to that school It wouldn't look good on my college application, but I decided it was okay because either way I would end up going to community college therefore take the easy way and just go to a continuation school. Now that I've seen your video , I am determined to keep trying( which actually, trying is what I'm scared of. I don't want to try hard just so at the end I can fail my goal) I will try very hard my junior & Senior year with hopes that it all pays off

I’m here because I did sucky my first semester of junior. I got like a 3.5 gpa this semester and my overall gpa is like a 3.6 or 3.7. It’s funny I began with straight As in my freshman year ambitious to go to Berkeley, but I looked deeply at my life, my sophomore year mostly consisted of Cs and Bs as I took this time to pursue the discovery of myself, I changed philosophies and religions, I wrote two books in my spare time, but I realized writing wasn’t really for me, then I began research the basic concepts of physics and other sciences, diving deeper and deeper in understanding, wanting to pursue these interests and eventually get a PhD, I know now this isn’t an option so I decided to join the navy and become a nuclear engineer on a submarine and eventually build a prototype of an invention I’ve been working on

I'm a junior and my weighted GPA is a 3.6. This year I kinda got lazy ended up have two D's the first term. Then I brought up my grades. I take an AP course I have a consistent 75 in the class or all(which rounds up to an 85). And I'm so nervous because I don't know if my GPA is gonna drop or stay the same. However its not enough to get into NYU (GPA-3.7 and highly competitive). Scares and sadness me to know that I have a good chance of not getting or even be able to receive scholarship money from them. This was all possible because of the drive that you had to achieve your goal. Everyone develops at different speeds, so don't be discouraged because you aren't a top student in high school. I just got accepted into UM out of high school, but I still draw on this for motivation to push my education further.

I'm going to be a senior in high school. I have a 2.3 gpa but an IQ of 120. When people find out my grades they're shocked because it does not reflect my intellect, but school just doesn't work for me! SOMEONE HELP! I'm just now going into highschool but took a highschool Spanish class last school year and got a D. Because I was kinda depressed for the last 2 quarters and didn't care. But I've always been a good student and plan to be one throughout highschool. Will this ruin my GPA and or my chances at an Ivy league school?

I have a 2.9 GPA and a 1250 SAT score. The reason my GPA is so low is because in freshman and sophomore year I thought I could afford to get c's so about all of my grades were c's. By the second semester of sophomore year I got my grades up to 2 B's and the rest A's. Im still continuing to get mostly A's and nothing lower then a B. Do colleges look at improvement in your grades or do they just look at your over all GPA and judge you based on that? Do you think I still have a chance at Penn State if I keep on this path or I should look at easier colleges?

I'm not sure if you will read this comment but i really want to be a vet when i get out of high school and i have a 2.8 gpa and i had some issues going on in 11th grade which made me not do so well especially sense first semester was good but second semester was not i'm not sure what else to do sadly i had my heart set on going to a university and not a community college i did get angry at myself sense that's the route i have to take i have a lot of issues that doesn't help i suffer from loneliness depression and social anxiety which does affect me in the class room a lot of times and not sure if i should even tell my college that when i send out applications i do want to go to school right after i graduate but i have a lot of issues after graduation which also made my grades not so good my dad doesn't want to pay for our house anymore so my mom is forced to move after i graduate but i told my mom that i don't want to be here to see that happen because of me personally not wanting to deal with another thing that is going to make me depressed i do go to therapy for these things but i started going to therapy around 11 grade so i'm pretty sure when i graduate i'm probably still going to have these issues but not as much and in 10th grade my brother passed away and it hit my mom pretty hard and she was always crying about it and it affected me a lot in the class room and i also went through some really bad depression i do try to get it off my mind but its hard i'm not sure to do i'm depressed about my gpa and how i feel like i should have done better i have really bad emotional issues and sense the social part of my brain isn't fully mature yet its hard for me to even think about going to community college and then there's a issues towards me being lonely because i don't have a girlfriend or boyfriend or that many friends sense they don't really support me so i don't have a supportive outlet my parents don't really support me with school and things like that because my mom doesn't understand my homework sense its different now so i'm really hurting right now really..

i don't live in the us but I would really like to study there or maybe in the uk. I am 21 years old now and I had quite a rough time when my parents seperated just a few weeks before my 17th birthday and all my grades started to drop. I made the wrong friends, started to take drugs and drink huge amounts of alcohol and no one really seemed to care at first but eventually my parents send me to hospital to become clean. I came back and I had missed a whole school year so I had to do it again. first everything seemed fine but eventually something seemed a bit off about me and I didn't know what was going on, I was just getting these mood swings, always feeling a bit nauseous and weak and again I missed quite a lot of classes but this time because I wasn't feeling well. A few months later I had fallen back again and I dropped out of school. the whole next year I was trying to figure out what to do with my life and got really depressed (so hospital again, yay) and I eventually decided to go back to school and finish it this time. about 3/4 into my first school year I got sick. really sick. and no one could tell me what was going on. I must have been to over 13 doctors and it took them 5 months to finally come up with a treatable diagnosis. so now there I was again , having missed a lot of school, possibly failing my classes and being really depressed about it. But I decided not to screw myself over this time. I studied harder than ever, was not exactly recieving good grades but at least not failing and now finals are only 3 months away. It looks like I will leave school with a 'gpa' of 2.5-3.0 which really sucks. but still I will be proud to have finished school at all, especially while dealing with both physical and mental illness during my final school years and even conquering them. so I will apply for college anyway. not sure how on earth I am supposed to convince them but there is nothing left to lose!

As funny as it sounds, I had no clue what college was or even what came after high school for a long time. I had no clue what the purpose of life was and what things I had to do to get through it. I learned about college in my freshman-sophomore year of high school. Because I had no motivation and felt like there was no reason to work hard, I didn't get the best grades. I always felt some sort of dissatisfaction in myself and found myself upset when I didn't do well. But then, I got a reality check when we had to meet our college guidance counselor and she told me my GPA. It was around a 2.0. She told me I would not be going to college. That was the day I knew something had to change. When I say I put in my life into taking AP and Honors courses, I turned a lot of things around. I was able to bring my GPA up to around a 3. I literally couldn't have done it without believing in myself. Motivation and a positive mindset can go such a long way. I went from failing and taking summer school for 2 years in a row and not knowing what college is to be in a 4-year institution on my journey to medical school. I still have so much to do! If I could do it, anyone really can.

I just started freshman year of high school, and I am doing terribly. I got C's, D's and one F. I want to go to George Washington university and I need a 3.8 GPA minimum. I currently am taking Honors classes, do you think I should switch down to CP classes? The problem with my high school is that it is the teachers that make the difficulty.....as in some teachers want to be the students friend hand out no homework and are very lenient towards bad or late work. And some teachers are very strict with clear biased towards other types of students. CP classes here just means you go at a slower pace, but my problem isn't the pace, its the amount of work. That is my main problem. I get overwhelmed quickly and my brain just shuts down. And with testing, I can study very hard, but when the test comes I get overwhelmed and dizzy and either forget the material or get too paranoid to think. I also have only one friend and not to many people like me there which gets me even more mad because I don't care about half of the things i'm learning. (I want to go into politics and human sciences). Since this is my first semester of high school I know its a base but I know that I could do something to fix it. I found it so emotional when the principle handed him the honorary diploma. It made me so happy that after so many years, he received what might have been haunting him in the past. And I really think he deserved it since now he's teaching kiddos that life's not over after high school.

Hi, I'm a student in eight grade. I get average grades which isn't bad but ok. In my school people get "honor roll" if their average is 6.00 , I didn't get it my score was 5.85😑 I really want to go to UCLA it is my absolute dream and I want to be a surgeon! Would it be possible for me to get into UCLA without honor roll in middle school? Also I don't go to school in America because my family and I moved to Europe but we're moving back soon! 😅 So would I be able to go to UCLA?

I don't see how you received $200,000 to attend college. Was that from the school? The state? Private scholarships? Or maybe all three? Where you received the money is still unsure for me and still leaves me left without knowledge to gain money to attend college. I am happy for your success but it doesn't seem like everyone is as available for the same opportunities that you had. However, hard work and dedication are great values to ingrained and note as keys to success.

I wouldn't even say kids are dumb. They're not. It's not a matter of dumb or smart. It's a matter of hard working and determined vs. lazy as shit. High achieving students often have a strong reason or ambition as to why they choose to do well. Your purpose has to be strong enough. If you're sitting in school not knowing why you're there in the first place you're probably not gonna perform that great so it all starts with the question why are you here and what are trying to do after you graduate.
