To clarify 48khz is my preferred sample rate for recording and a buffer size for mixing is really anything goes as long as it works. Whether it’s 512, 1024 or even 256 it’s fine for mixing. When it comes to recording you wanna get this buffer size as low as possible for less latency. For me the sweet spot is 128 because 64 takes to much power for my computer BUT if ur computer can handle it drop it as low as you want for recording!

ALSO: (Things that helped me along the way) - Don't process your midi tracks that hard, rather bounce them out as audio and then do the processing - Work with sends/busses for the same elements (for example: create a bus where all your main vocals go to and then process the bus rather than putting the same processing on every single vocal track) - If you are mastering as well, first export the mixed version and create a new project just for mastering.

Nice tips! I saw some people confused so I wanted to help clarify, any higher buffer size above 512 should work for mixing. You should really aim for as low of a buffer size as possible without getting any popcorn (pops, crackles, or drops in audio). The least amount of latency is usually always better, but definitely not if it comes at the cost of sound quality.

Liked and subbed! Yep, had a limiter on my master. Bypassed but not inactive. That was a major cause of my current problem. I've got 32G of RAM. My meter tells me that Pro Tools is never using more than half of it. I wonder if doubling the RAM might help prevent CPU crashes in this case. Another thing I'll try is PCI express SSD's directly into the motherboard in place of SATA 3 connected SSD's 40GB a second transfer speeds vs 10. It seems though like the big bottleneck is the CPU, and they aren't getting much faster. I doubt that an upgrade to Pro Tools HD Native is going to let me play 50 instrument tracks at once.

One thing that happens too is that there is the initialization costs cpu power a little before the file comes in. The benefit without dynamic processing power is that you don’t constantly shift load and you can move faster in a session as a result since it is all in memory.

my macbook and yours too, have ssds, but its a full ssd and ive noticed that having small amounts of storage like 10 to 20 gb compared to having 100+gb of free storage makes the session not run smoothly, so thank you for reminding me that i can just buy an external ssd, i was thinking of upgrading my ssd to 1 TB instead of 500gb, but it costs a shit ton, since only one or two companies manufacture ssds for macbooks

You may also want to completely run your session from your secondary SSD rather than using the one dedicated to your CPU. It wasn't mentioned in the video, but this will also help you) if you're able to buy another SSD and you have an older MacBook (for example 2012) just take your DISC drive out and place the SSD onboard in that space.

Here Ive been using a hdd for all my projekts and only 8 gb ram 😅 It's been ok since I haven't used that heavy plugins or instruments...but just a few days ago I purchased Omnisphere 2 and I can't use it in Pro Tools atm. So I've ordered a new ssd drive and more ram. Gonna have one ssd for windows and all software and another ssd for when I'm working in PT. Hopefully I can run Omnisphere better after that 😁

@@JakeMcGarryDrums I've added ram so I have 24 gb.. I bought a new ssd which now is my workdisc for projects . And I'm using another drive for storage . Omnisphere runs better but it's so heavy though. Some sound slows down the cpu a whole lot. But my projects aren't that massive so I manage 👍I usually only use 1 or 2 omnisphere sounds per beat.

I think the buffering is based on preferences I use 48 samples for recording and 1028 for mixing

PRO TIP: Close Google Chrome, and i mean QUIT, takes more cpu power than anything EDIT: if you have an external monitor connected to your macbook try taking it off aswell and if you see that nothing is working, look up how to replace Thermal Paste, its an easy process that will help cool down your cpu while its being used

I remember in pro tools 10 / 11 / 12 (Windows) it had terrible multicore support, more cores u had the worse it was, some would remain dormant while others would spike to 100%. This is because Avid keep milking an age old engine, I bailed to Cubase and not once had this issue, but anyway, here is a good trick for those that still suffer the issue, take note of which core is spiking and in the Taskmanger set Affinity, untick the core, this core will now be used by Windows and u will notice the work load spreading across other cores, it resets itself every time u boot Pro Tools, peace...

96khz makes analog emulation plugins sound better. If you don’t have a good enough computer you might need to commit them though.

I still dont know why my pro tools is lagging so much. Ive got a 8 core - 16 thread cpu, 16gb ram, an ssd with 500 mb/s and it lags so bad! Already set the buffer size to 1024 still laggin. Any fixes??? Have to mention im currently using no interface (Using an virtual interface). Could that be the problem??? Thanks

That’s your issue right there it’s the virtual interface and the high buffer size. Virtual interfaces like the pro tools aggregate can cause massive amounts of lag. Instead set your playback engines to Mac pro speakers or whatever your windows sound card is. Trust me the virtual interface and the buffer size is def ur issue!!

You'd typically want to run with that as a last resort in mastering, 9/10 if you're running a larger session you'd want to go with 1028, but you don't really need it unless you're using too many power-hungry plugins.

What you said about about SSDs is not actually true. What an SSD does is make sure your files goes fast to your RAM and from there you processor read the files and plays them back. The only think that a fast storage drive will do is making the project or your samples/sample libraries load transfer faster on the ram.

@@HelpMeDevvon Ofc it can if you enter a ridiculous voltage number and remove all safety options from bios. Its really really hard to be able to damage it in any way. Most of the cpus have built in turbo and overclock themself under load. If your monitor ur temps is close to imposible to damage it unless your going full retard mode.
