(How to) Polish Marble Countertops
I'm teaching you how to polish marble countertops - Renee Romeo. This is an inexpensive fix for etched and marred marble slabs. You know - the ones with spots and water marks caused by standing water, water droplets and inappropriate cleaners. Since marble is a soft stone, it's more susceptible to these types of stains than other solid surface countertops. Not only am I teaching you how to completely remove etching and stains, I'm also showing you how to seal your marble slab to resist further issues. So, since I have a bathroom vanity with etched countertops, it's time to DIY the damage away with a marble countertop polishing kit.
Whether you have solid marble rock or veneer (like I do), this marble polishing kit (available here) will revive your countertop to a like-new surface. I will restore mine to a mirror-like finish during this video tutorial. Currently, this kit is less than $30.00! It's a real bargain compared to completely replacing your stone countertops! Marble countertop costs are among the highest in the countertop business. Realistically, you can't purchase one single square foot of marble material for that price. Unbelievably, polishing marble is an easy process for you to do on your own. You just need to prep your space accordingly and you'll be on your way to vibrant countertops in no time. I share all my secrets with you and show you how to make a marble top shiny - even yours!
This is a cheap makeover!
Because you only need a few supplies for your marble polishing, this project costs less than $100.00 to complete. Also, there isn't a fancy marble polishing powder to purchase, a marble polish machine to rent or marble polishing compound to buy. Best yet? The few items you need to complete this project are available on my SHOP page at www.reneeromeo.com. It's so easy and convenient to purchase everything you need in one simple location. I do all the product research for you and find the best products (and deals) to get your job done like a pro. Cleaning and restoring marble really can be an inexpensive project!
By the way, If you're looking for marble cleaner and polish product to restore your marble surfaces to like-new condition, that product doesn't exist. I'm showing you something even better. The best marble polish happens to be water - yes, water - and that's completely free! Can you believe that your DIY marble polish is the very thing that causes your countertop to be etched and marred in the first place? It turns out that water is actually the best marble polish on the planet! Then, when you're done cleaning and restoring marble, I show you how to keep it brand new-looking for years to come in one easy step.
This process restores all color marble, from white marble to black and gives you a vibrant, glossy surface to admire for years to come. When you learn how to polish marble, polishing marble countertops may even give you the confidence to polish marble tile. Marble tile tends to loose its luster, whether it's installed on a countertop or floor surface. Even though this process may seem daunting (it's hard to imagine taking time to polish marble floor (s)), I will give you the confidence to try that too. Learning how to polish marble floors will certainly save you thousands in replacement costs.
What we're really here for is an easy tutorial on how to restore marble table top surfaces with damage by wear and tear. This article demonstrates how marble gets etched: www.thekitchn.com/what-a-marb... . I'm giving you the education you want to fix the ugly problem permanently. This is an unsightly issue that you don't have to live with - like this person is doing. If you're considering living with unsightly countertop surfaces, I'm giving you the preferred option of shining them up, not honing the glass-like look down. Honing is a little different than polishing. You may want to click on the link in the previous sentence to learn the difference.
I have a 'new' marble top vanity from a consignment store that I'm demonstrating on today. It is new to me but sorely in need of a makeover. Not only is the marble in rough shape but the sink, faucet and cabinet are full of wear too.

Excellent video! I had a black marble Saarinen table to restore. I watched this video on Monday, ordered all the stuff from Amazon, and got the last of it today, Thursday. It took about 2.5 hours before I was able to put my first coat on. Worked perfectly. The table looks brand new. I saved $700 by doing it myself.

Hi Paul, Thank you for the kind words!! I know a lot of people are living with this problem - especially in their baths. The French have a word called "patina" to describe their etched marble. It's sounds much more romantic than it looks though - lol. This process restores any marble back to its lovely , shiny, mirror-like surface. All the best with your project, Renee

Paul if you can’t get the etch marks out with diaglo polishing powder and a felt pad or natural fiber pad, don’t attempt using diamond pads diy as shown in this video. If you’re really serious about doing these repairs diy look up a video by a stone professional for scratch removal.

Hi Serenely Zen, For your floor tiles I might recommend trying just the last two discs to re-shine the surface. You may not need a complete overhaul of the surface if you don't have obvious etching like I had. Since it's more square footage to deal with, it will be a big time saver if you can get away with it. I work for a company and all we do is refinish stones such as marble I can tell you you do not need to start at a 50 diamond pad unless the marble is really beat to shit you can start at a 200 or even 400 some times also make sure to keep it wet and also to clean your slurry in-between pads also if you want to get a good polish you need to buy a polish pad they are white it sticks on that driver use some 5x or Italian 5x and polish with that but make sure you have a neutralizer to clean the polish off with after and if you polish this way you can stop at a 800 pad also with sealer its useless if you polish correctly if you want a lower sheen then yes you need to seal but if you take it up to a high sheen then no need also I'd use a sealer called pro salv it comes in a grey bottle from home depot or lowes also if you want to leave your stone with a wet color look you can use enrich and seal best of luck and remember if you mess up call me we can fix it lol

Def start with 100 grit not 50. Next move to 220 and so on. When using the 100 grit, do 3 sets of double passes (double pass is one movement to the right then back to left) per row. Move slow. This will grind out scratches dings water marks ECT and give u even application. U should not see any scratchy marks from the sanding process once u get to the last sanding pad. At the end, make sure to use good soft buffing and polishing pads and u will see a mirror shine without having to use that stuff she does at the end for shine.

Hi Barbara, You're welcome! The handle came with the drill. It's a Hammer drill that I can turn on/off (that feature) for heavy duty drilling or regular drilling. Most normal drills don't come with a threaded hole for a handle likecthat - at least the ones that I have seen. Hey - thanks! I wanted this process to be approachable for most homeowners so I used a drill (that's why it's clockwise). Hello, Renee, I am polishing the marble from an antique wash stand using the same method as shown in this post. Rather than using a spray bottle of water, I have the pieces slightly submerged in a water bath. I am having a problem with the diamond disks catching or grabbing. Can you please suggest how to avoid this? Thanks.
@ReneeRomeo
@ReneeRomeo 3 жыл бұрын
Hi OcotilloDavid, In my experience, I think that because the marble is wet all the way through, it can't grab. I used the water just to keep the dust down as I was working. I'm guessing that's the issue. Also, with the marble wet all the way through, you won't be able to tell when you have a nice, evenly sanded surface (with each disc), which you need in order to avoid swirl marks. Try letting it dry out for a day before you continue. All the best with your project, Renee

@@ReneeRomeo Hello, Renee, my problem is not enough grab, but that the disc digs in sometimes. I took out a fresh (dry) piece of the top/back splash, didn't submerge it, but used a spray bottle and had the same problem. I had been using both hands to operate the drill, one to hold the trigger, the other to help guide it. I tried using only one hand and had minimal grab. I think the weight of the second hand put too much pressure on the disc. Thanks for your help.

i think you can use marble polishing powder mixed with water and buff it with a buffing pad and you will get that gloss on the marble without the sealer, the sealer is just supposed to seal, no need to go through 10 pad grits just to remove etching, its too much work for the same result.

I have honed marble with etches from vinegar etc... can I polish it with this technique?
@ReneeRomeo
@ReneeRomeo 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mollyjak4, Yes, This is perfect for vinegar etching because vinegar actually makes deep scars in the marble finish. You can get to the bottom of the etching easily with the discs and the bring up the polish as much as you need to as well. You probably don't need to use all of them since yours are honed. Perhaps you can get away with using them just in the areas that are affected as well. Mine worked out great! I'm so pleased. I’m don’t know if I’m getting the right results. I have major water stains on a white marble countertop that has made it yellow. I’ve done the first half of the disks twice now and still see the yellow stains... I am just using a regular cordless drill. Is there a speed or torque I should have the drill set on to be getting better results? Or should I just keep going? I image the larger numbers are more polishing than removing stains.
@ReneeRomeo

Hi Genevieve, I don't know how far down yellowing goes in marble because I was just dealing with etching issues on my example. It's difficult to say how to address your problem. If you have a marble veneer (like I do), you run the risk of going right through the whole thickness. Please research how far down the yellowing can go before you proceed any further. Renee

Renee, I watched your video six times before I embarked on polishing my kitchen marble countertops. You don’t mention how to keep the drill from flailing wildly all over the place. As soon as I started and the drill spun out I thought oh no, something is not right here. After the first, second, and third painful disc, I stopped and read some of the comments below. One said you had a device attached to your drill to prevent it from spinning out. In one of your replies, you mention a hammer drill. But since I didn't have that type of drill I continued on and it was a very difficult process. The last several discs I just barely skimmed the surface to prevent the spin out. The second thing is that my 511 didn't dry! You say to wait 2 hours, but mine was still tacky overnight. I Googled and read that the product does remain tacky for up to 72 hours. I’m out of town now for a few weeks and wondering what it will look like when I get home. I don’t want to buy any more equipment but I could try to rent the hammer drill at Home Depot to refinish a small cabinet top. But I want to make sure I’m asking for the right thing. Could you please advise? Thank you.
@ReneeRomeo
@ReneeRomeo 9 ай бұрын
Excellent points! In my case, I just tried to keep even, downward pressure to keep things from getting out of control. The handle on the hammer drill can help with this but I'm also wondering if you were keeping the drill running at its highest spinning point (in other words, full capacity spin). In other projects, when I have the trigger only half pressed, the torque becomes higher and I could see how it would quickly get out of control. If you re-try, make sure that the drill is spinning at it's highest rate. That should help. As far as the enhancer goes, don't worry about it. There's nothing you can do about it right now anyway. I really think it will dry. Also, depending upon the color of your marble, there are things to try if it's still tacky. Keep me posted, Renee

Thank you. I returned after several weeks and the 511 was dry. I think I may have put it on too thick without not enough drying time between (also I live at the beach so the air is moist). But the countertop looked amazing. It has a slight rubbery quality to the touch, but I'm okay with that. Every time I walk into the kitchen I am very pleased that I did this project. And I could NOT have done this without your amazing video. So thank you again.

Debbie, The only thing I can think of is that your marble could be harder or softer than mine. If you do a test area with the last three discs, you'll know how deep you need to go with the sanding disks. If you don't get to the bottom of your damage, add a couple more and continue. In the end, if you have to go over the trouble area twice, at least you know it will turn out perfectly. I hope this helps! All the best, Renee

After sanding all the way up to 3000 grit, it is still not enough. it needs 5000, 7000, or even 10000 grit to reach a smooth surface. And then you need to use polishing powder(usually acidic power) to reach the mirror reflecting level surface. The sealer can only seal it. It does not make it mirror-like.

Torres Z, I've had others chime in on this and it appears that not all marble is the same. This process worked perfectly for the type that I have. I almost used 511 Impregnator Sealer think it was the best, but the Home Depot 1 star reviews have people running from it, stating it ruined (stained yellow, streaks) their light colored marble counter tops and the 1 star for Seal & Enhance are just as bad!? My marble vanity is quite large and it is one piece, The back is fluid to the backsplash. When I put the sander up to the back - it feels like it is cutting the marble. Should I stop the sander before it gets to the back? I have 2 scalloped sink bowls that also a part of the same marble. They don't come out. The vanity is all one piece. When I am using the sander inside the sink bowls, the sander can not lie flat. When I turned it, again,. it feels like it is cutting into the grooves of the scallops. Should I use something else inside? I hope I am not ruining the vanity! I can feel the cuts in the scallops. it is like it took off the edges of each scallop and the center of each scallop is super scratched now.

I hope I can save my vanity as I was trying to use the process in the video to remove the scratches :) It did remove the scratches from the main part of the double vanity but left all the circles from the sanding discs. The 511 impregnator is not shining up the marble, nor getting rid of the circles. I have applied it 3 times, once every 2 hours and all it does is dry with the circles still there and stlll. I will try to buy a car polisher tomorrow and see if I can buff the circles out. @@ReneeRomeo I called the glue company here. I did NOT ruin the vanity!!! YEAH!!! They told me to use car polish and a buffer. This may help other people who have cultured marble vanities. Use car polish/scratch remover with a buffer pad you can put on your drill. Then keep buffing until all the swirls are gone. He said I did ruin the gel coat but that others have ruined their gel coat too and this is the remedy. After that, there is a wax you can use to polish after using the scratch remover car stuff, and the shine will be back. For my scallops in the bowls- since cultured marble is a composite material it is the same color all the way through. So I have to use 1000 grit sandpapeer to smooth my mistakes out in the bowls, then again, use the polish/scratch remover with buffer pads, then add the waxes. This may help people who have a brain like mine, and did not process that marble and cultured marble are 2 different things:)

So I tried this on my countertops and now I can’t get the full cloudiness to go away ☹️ The stains and etching were very bad and I DID get all of that out...it looks great when I put the sealer but as soon as it dries completely it’s cloudy again. Any advice? Did I ruin it? 😭
@ReneeRomeo
@ReneeRomeo 3 жыл бұрын
Briana, While it's difficult to give individual advice, you haven't ruined it. I'm not sure what the problem is with your sealer. Perhaps you can take the recommendation of another viewer and use a horsehair polisher/buffer at this point. I guess it's used for countertops without etching. I've never used one so I'm not sure exactly how it works out. Please Google it before you proceed. Renee

Don't use drill as a tool. It is next to impossible to keep it leveled, It also impossible to maintain the same rotation speed. And that speed will affect the result. Namely parts where marble was polished at different speed will have different appearance. In stead of drill use car polisher (angular car polisher) and if you can dot the job outside or can get duster attachment that could be connected to vacuum cleaner skip diamond pads. For softer stone like marble Silicon Carbide fiber disks for stone will be better and faster job. Start at git of about 60 and continue with 120, 220, 400, 800 higher if needed. At lower grid numbers keep rotation speed at minimum - grit 60 -220 at about 600 - 1000 rpm with higher grits you can increase speed but no more then 2500-2800 rpm

Is there a way to Fix the inside of the sink if the marble is cracking
@ReneeRomeo
@ReneeRomeo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Angelica, I think you're talking about cultured marble with an integrated sink. If so, the process is completely different because it's not a natural stone. I have heard that there are repair kits for this. You'd have to contact a manufacturer if cultured marble sinks and ask if you can purchase a kit along with instructions. I hope this helps your situation. Thanks for the great question! All the best, Renee

@@marcschepis8256 I know this an old comment, but would you mind weighing in with your expertise? I have a piece of marble that was neglected and needs refinished. I think Renee's method is great for the DIYer, but if I would do it myself I would look into more quality equipment. I've seen videos using a large, variable speed buffing tool with Zoom pads (expensive on their own right). All and all it was fairly similar to this process, with maybe a more scarce placement of water and more precise pathing with the buffer. Is this something that, with the right tools and research, could be an attainable DIY project? I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable using these pads or a hand drill to get an even polish, is that where your hesitancy to have others follow this guide come from? Sorry for the long-winded question!

This is a question, if you're using regular water that has particulate matter and you are now sanding down a marble/granite countertop, are you worried that the water is leaving the particulate matter within the water behind?
@ReneeRomeo
@ReneeRomeo 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Cameron, Excellent question! I have well water at my house but I have an in-line carbon filter on the water treatment system so that I don't have particulates in the water. If you have well water without a filtration system. I would recommend that you purchase a couple of gallons of distilled water for this project. Of course, treated city water is fine. I hope this helps your situation. All the best, Renee

I tried this and I couldn’t get all the circular marks out. A professional told me to use a polishing powder to get them out but it probably wouldn’t look perfect. I’m unhappy about starting this difficult project. I should have had the promo it and not waste the time and money I already spent.
@ReneeRomeo
@ReneeRomeo 3 жыл бұрын
Paula, I didn't have to use polishing powder to get perfect results - just the pads and sealer/enhancer. I think a little more time is all it takes. A nice even amount of honing (sanding) will make all the difference. The more marble you're taking off, the more even the final result will be. Perhaps you're going too quickly and are willing to try it again? I didn't want to give a time frame for each disc because everyone's surface is probably be a different size than mine. All the best, Renee
