We did this in agriculture class when I was 14/15. It was fun. Many years later my kids enjoyed pears & apples from those trees yearly, as we bought my grammas old house where the trees were planted.

David, thank you for this detailed information! A small tip: if you want to wrap the graft with parafilm against evaporation, this is very easy if you do this partially in advance. This way the new connection will not be under too much pressure during this operation and you have even more chance of success! Greetings from Belgium

When I were taught gardening, about a century ago, we had secateurs/pruning shears, grafting knife, raffia and grafting wax. When oculating roses we used only raffia to bind the oculared eye onto the root stock.......there has been not much 'new' developments into the art of grafting, which makes me feel not so old 😁. Thank you for this nice video.

Great video David, but you made me cringe a couple times pulling that fixed blade utility knife towards yourself. But, then I saw the multiple band aids on both of your hands and I said to myself, " No Worries, He's a Professional ", haha. I had an avocado tree years ago at my parents house that I started from seed. It never would produce fruit so a friend of my pop's showed me how to graft. Fast forward a few years and I had three varieties of awesome avocados on one parent plant, root stock.

For a moment I thought you were going to unwind a band-aid and proclaim, "And recently I've succeeded in grafting on a finger!" Good stuff. I read the Free Plants for Everyone book past few days. If y'all like the video, definitely check out the book. Lots of helpful information in there. (I think it helps to read the book and then watch this since this is all new to me, but the book has a lot of other propagating info, in addition to grafting.)

Great video. Informal and informative. I've been grafting for about ten years and I learned from reading and just practicing. Still it's a good idea to see what other folks know since this is one activity where there's always more to learn. Once you have learned the basics you can experiment in so many ways. Beyond technique the most important thing to learn is when to do it. I know you couldn't possibly cover that here because it varies so much from type of plant to climate.

Thank you for a great instructional and informative how-to video. I once saw a fig tree that had a single fig on it nearly the size of a large avocado, but all the other figs were average - the size of a large chicken egg. I know where the tree is. I will try grafting that huge fig's scion to a chinaberry stump that continues to grow new shoots over 10' tall every spring. The chinaberry (the other Mahogany) is about 30 years old. Year after year it relentlessly put out millions of blooms and millions of clusters of tiny green apples and when they fell most of them sprouted. That may be the mother lode rootstock! I found a white mulberry tree that put out huge long white mulberry's as sweet as honey and juicy! Ooooo yeah. You bet I will on the same chinaberry stump!! Can't wait!! Incidentally, years ago I inoculated the soil around that tree with a lot of endomychorryzal fungi spores of several Glomus spp. It was available via mailorder. You can look it up. That chinaberry became an enormous beast. I still have tons of the wood to use for anything wood is good for.
