I've watched dozens of these "Get Home Bag" videos. What I've learned about building one is that half of the components are identical. That is a gun, knife, water filter, medical kit, shelter, etc. About another quarter of the bag is built around where you live and/or what time of year you're in. The last quarter pretty much seems to be optional, whatever makes you feel safe and you're personal style of survival. I have to admit, my bag is in a constant state of flux. I change things up based on the times of the year and where my travels may take me. Plus, I may add things or change things up based on people's ideas. Not only does all this keep me prepared, I just enjoy the hell out of it.

Especially having to walk that far to home, two things you may want to think about is trekking poles (can be used when making your poncho into a shelter) which are very light these days and usually foldable or retractable. The second would be moleskin to save your feet if blisters pop up. Great video.

One addition that I started packing is a strip of Leukotape. It's for skin and sticks even when wet. I use it to prevent blisters on heels. You can also use it for abrasions. The stuff sticks until you remove it.

I am mostly a weekend car camper.. (and a bit of a prepper) Even though ive downsized my camping gear over the years.. Im having trouble downsizing my get home bag.. I have to keep reminding myself that its gear that I will probably never have to use but can potentially save my life if I do.. Ive just ordered an emergency bivvy to replace my sleeping bag in my get home bag..
@Pineboxperspective2 ай бұрын
For me, I've found that less is more in most situations. I tend to prefer mobility over excess gear. Hard thing to do when you're a gear head but, I just remind myself that the gear is still at the house when I get back.

Well thought out bag. You might want to look into a Grayl water purifier. A little pricey compared to the Sawyer but well worth it.

Very good, informative video, one thing I do want to comment on and share, not being critical, but just some input from a long time Sawyer filter user that I hope might help. Dump the plastic container, it is hard to fill by submerging it, I also have had the tops burst when squeezing to fill a different container.. I carry two Smart Water bottles, they are tough and lightweight, I take them filled at first, and when empty you can fill like you said to do using the soft bladder only it is a lot easier, plus the filter screws right onto the water bottle if you are in a hurry. I usually fill one to drink straight from or use to transfer water to the other bottle, one filtered, one dirty water....mark your bottles to keep from mixing dirty with clean. The larger Smart Water bottles come with a pop lid cap for drinking without having to remove the lid, this serves another purpose if you use the bottle only for filtered water, the end of the nozzle will fit over the spout on the filter, so you can use the filtered bottle to flush your filter and leave the syringe behind. A second thing is, do not leave the filter in your pack in cold weather, water left in it can freeze and compromise the filter, I carry mine in a zip lock bag inside my jacket next to my body to keep it from freezing. Using the bandana is a great idea to keep out particulates, I have done that for years, even in containers like a cooking pot dipped from a water source to boil.
@Pineboxperspective6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the advice. I was wondering about the bags over a period of time. In the past I have always had time to just boil my water so my experience with filters is purely experimental. Thanks and thank you for watching.

More water storage means less time looking for water and less time hanging out around water. The more you're around a water source, the more likely you'll run into other people. Not ideal in a SHTF scenario. Definitely get a quality water bladder and keep the Nalgene also. You can take the bladder out and quickly fill it and your Nalgene and get away from the water source incredibly fast. Your Sawyer mini works great on the tube inside the pack if needed. I carry a Sawyer mini and purification tabs. I have a 15 year old Camelbak that has never leaked a drop. I don't see a need for any food besides Cliff bars or whatever, and that poncho and an emergency bivy is plenty of shelter. Adding some liquid IV wouldn't be a bad idea along with some sunscreen. 😎 I 1,000% agree with trying not to stand out. Dig the videos and looking forward to seeing all y'all this spring.

Excellent point. Many a creature has succumbed to the dangers at the watering hole. I've recently learned that water filters and most purification tablets don't protect against viruses so, now the bag changes again. I'm foreshadowing a followup video on my water system.

A video worth watching. I have watched a lot of survival information videos. I have designed the perfect survival pack, which is actually 3 packs in a roll around backpack. I have built my own Quartermaster supply. Some people think I am obsessed because I don't really live on grid. Further and further out and it may be a psychological problem as I do not like the urban environment, so important items should be emphasized and binoculars are not mentioned often , it's a given , with what is shown , I kind of like the little Swiss army knife.

Great kit! These things are very personal and seem to be ever changing lol especially with those of us that enjoy gear 🤣, I also like the longer videos myself...perhaps my attention span is longer than others lol. At least your doing the correct thing and trying it all out and using it, those that just set it in a closet and never touch it will be in a sad state of affairs should they ever need to use it. The katadyn micropur 1 tabs and the grayl bottles both work on viruses which is a good option to have, there are rumblings of commie covers making a comeback so no telling what these fools are up to 🤣. Great job and keep up the good work! 👍

I beg to differ on the “hiking 27 hours straight, nobody’s going to do that” comment. Look up 3 of 7 project. They have a rite of passage course that requires you to hike for 24 hours straight and you can’t even sit down. It will make you want to quit but I completed it with a lot of common people who had and uncommon will to succeed. Don’t set limitations on yourself. That being said. Probably a good idea to plan on sleeping and sitting😅
