I worked for the State of California for nearly 32 years. I began my career in late 1988, after graduating from college into an entry-level professional position. I promoted up about five levels during that time. I retired about three years ago at the height of the pandemic. In my retirement, I am making 94 percent of what I made when I was actively working for the State of California. I will be eligible for Social Security in two years, and will be collecting about 127 percent of what I was making before I retired from State Service. While working for the State wasn't always perfect, I had my share of some very interesting assignments.

That is pretty wild. And you probably have stuff that's paid off now (house, cars, school loans, etc) and other expenses are less, kids probably out of the house vs. when you were actively working. Probably 150-200%. I am taking a wild guess and just making assumptions but that could be a possibility.

@@calistatejobcoach Yes I am. Especially after watching your video about the great reasons and benefits with a Cal State job. I left my administrative job in Tacoma, Washington at the beginning of the Pandemic, moved back to my home state of California, and now that it seems safer to return to an office, I'm looking to settle in Sacramento. @@gailhoward6329 , So....two things: 1. I’m living proof the State of California DOES NOT discriminate based on age. Hi, 3 questions. 1) do most departments really do require you to get to work at 8:00am through 5:00pm for the 80/9 schedule? 2) how long after an offer do they usually give you to move to Sacramento? 3) what is the best benefits package?

@calistatejobcoach Жыл бұрын
Answers in respective order: 1. Most departments offer flexible work schedules. You need to negotiate your work schedule with your Supervisor. 2. You need to live within California when you get "appointed". You could read this to mean on your actual start date. 3. Benefits too varied to discuss here. You'd need to select the benefits you deem to be the best. For example, I didn't use or pay for medical or dental benefits. I've got those covered through my military retirement. Hope this helps! ;-)

Hi Kent, great informative video. What was your experience working for cchcs? I’ve seen a lot of people say it can be a tough department but they haven’t elaborated on why that is. Is it a good place to “get your foot in the door”? There is a fair amount of ssa/agpa positions posted for that specific department currently so wondering if that would be a good place to apply. Please let me know your thoughts, Thank you!
@calistatejobcoach
@calistatejobcoach Жыл бұрын
Ahmari Gilchrist, thanks for the positive feedback. Much appreciated. As far as CCHCS goes, I never worked for them. I worked for Corrections and Rehabilitation (first) and General Services (second). I wouldn't worry too much about what people say who can't elaborate on their negative opinions. I think that any Department (in this case CCHCS) that has a lot of SSA/AGPA positions available is a good place to start. Really comes down to if you get a good feeling at the interview about the Hiring Manager and their team (usually on the interview panel). Get your foot in the door ASAP. You can always change to another department later if you decide that makes sense for you at that time. Hope this helps! Coach Kent - out! ;-)
@evanschwartz7738
@evanschwartz7738 Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks so much for this! Two questions. FIRST, for postdocs like me coming out of grad school -- we don't have much "professional experience" in the real world. So, when applying to SSA positions, can we use our doctoral advisors as "references" if our "supervisors" are from VERY long ago / and how do we tell the department to check those separately for points? SECOND, when an application is both SSA/AGPA, are SSAs competing with AGPAs (who have more experience), or are SSAs pooled and graded separately altogether?
@calistatejobcoach
@calistatejobcoach Жыл бұрын
I would recommend you do use your advisors as references. Points aren't assigned to references. Not sure what you're asking on that. All applicants are graded together. If the department doesn't get folks they feel comfortable offering jobs at the AGPA level, they're leaving themselves to offer at the SSA level. Hope this is clear. Good luck on your job search!

@calistatejobcoach

Moises, I don't think it would be difficult to get a job with the State at all. You might have to start in a more administrative/analytical job (for example Staff Services Analyst) than in a IT specific job. Once in with the State, you could then keep applying for the IT related positions. That's just one approach I'd suggest. If you'd like some 1-on-1 coaching, please send me an email to kentdills@yahoo.com and we can discuss. Coach Kent - out! ;-)

mimi, first, I'm not familiar with the office tech. scoring system so I'm not sure what your score of 4 means. Care to share on that? Second, I usually takes anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks to hear back after an interview if it's a positive response (meaning, they're making you a hiring offer, or you're being invited to a second round interview). If the interview result is negative, you may never hear back. In that case, no answer is the answer as we used to say in the U.S. Navy. Third, I can't and won't pass your name on to HR people. I'm very sorry about that but that's not how hiring is done at the State-level. That said, I wish you a lot of luck in this pursuit. I'm sorry you feel this way. State of California employees are very qualified for the job they hold and work very hard at what they do. Most/all State employees and State taxpayers know that the State employees get paid less than their non-State/corporate/private sector counterparts. In return for the lessor pay; they/we get very good benefits. It's a case of delayed gratification in other words. Hoping this helps in your understanding.
