I think the biggest disappointment of Ken leaving was that around the same time, Kurt Angle was debuting, just the fact we never got Kurt vs Ken would always be a disappointment

Had Shamrock not gotten hurt, we’d for sure have him as Kurt Angle’s debut feud. Could’ve even led to Angle adopting the Ankle Lock as his finisher earlier.

Kinda bonkers how many times Shane McMahon was right and ignored. Shane wanted to buy UFC, he basically wanted to do with ECW what WWE did with NXT, He pushed for using the internet more like with the wwe network, he pushed for more of the internet darling talent to be brought in, etc. Now he just feels like a footnote in WWE pushed out by his dad, his sister, and HHH. I genuinely feel Shane was just as visionary for WWE’s future as HHH has been and that in a rather insane way Vince saw him as competition the way he was to his dad.

We'll never fully know what went on behind the scenes, but I've always had this underlying theory that Vince secretly wanted his son, or anyone really, to directly challenge and usurp the company from his cold hands like some medieval folktale. In the end, Shane, for all his vision and bright ideas, really loved his father and lacked the mental fornitude that Vince was looking for in his would-be successor.

@@tairenk.3996wow this hits hard, but surely has to be true, given Vince damn near ran WWE into the ground with controversy after controversy. It took the man getting involved in one of the most notorious lawsuits we’ve ever seen to finally give up the throne for goodness sakes!

UFC would've failed under Vince cause they wouldn't know what to do with it especially since the UFC was banned in many states and on most PPV providers aka The Dark Ages (MMAonPoint has a great video on that time period and it was rough). UFC only blew up because of Griffin vs Forrester which happened in the finale of the ultimate fighter a reality show that I doubt Vince would've came up with. Then we're talking about the Internet in 2001, which is when he came up with the idea for ECW, idk about you but I remember the Internet was pretty rough back then lol and even shit like ByteThis rarely looked and ran good and that was in 2005 with people just sitting still half the time.

@@plshelpmeawkdough Bonnar was Griffin's opponent (I'm guessing you knew and just turned Forrest Griffin and Bonnar into Forrester; we've all done that haha) but otherwise I agree 100% - UFC would have turned into the Brawl for All on a massive scale if Vince tried to run it

I agree. The reason Ken Shamrock was never a main event is because it was bad timing with Austin,Rock, Foley, Taker, and Kane. Had he still been around in 99 and he was more reliable, he probably would’ve gotten there.

A footnote on the John McCain and MMA connection: McCain's father-in-law at the time was one of Anheuser-Busch's largest wholesale distributors. Televised boxing's largest advertiser was Anheuser beer, and not only did McCain have the family connection but he personally owned millions of dollars in their stock. McCain was a big boxing supporter, both personally and legislatively with the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act. He had a personal stake in seeing MMA not compete with boxing in getting TV time.

Ken was easily ahead of his time. Yeah, he wasn't the best on the microphone, but he was a genuine badass, he was solid in the ring. I think his career hit a ceiling due to booking and timing. But despite his flaws, he was still was able to accomplish a fair bit, winning two thirds of that triple crown. I imagine if he came in the Ruthless Aggression era and had a mouthpiece, he could have been a world champ, especially with the Brand split.

Blackman vs Shamrock in a shoot bout would have been amazing. You hear more about Blackman being a badass than Shamrock within the wrestling interviews I've seen. I'm not sure if it is related to longevity (therefore more exposure), or if there was hest with Shamrock for whatever was going on that he seems to be omitted. I just know that would be an amazing fight.

Ken Shamrock never got a 5-Star rating from Dave Meltzer. That limited Shamrock's career tremendously.

@@roccojamison89gooker51 it doesn't help that the attitude era he was wrestling the likes of Val Venis and Steve Blackman. He would've for sure had some highly rated matches had he stuck around for the influx of talent that came after he left in Benoit, Angle, Eddie, Booker T, RVD, Brock, etc.

Ken's book is a fascinating read. They really could've done more with him if they just made him a silent destroyer. That Breakdown triple threat cage match showed how over The Rock was, but equally how indifferent the fans were towards Ken.

That Backlash '99 match with Taker is, easily, one of the most divisive matches I've ever seen, from an online discourse perspective. There are some who (like Zane) consider it an absolute snorefest of a match, but there are others who see it more as being ahead of its time, as more mat-based, technical, & submission-focused matches would become more commonplace in WWE during the Ruthless Aggression Era. Personally, I do agree that it is a bit too slow for its own good, but I can definitely see what Shamrock & Taker were going for with it, and I do find enough enjoyment in it, but it absolutely had no place happening during the peak of the Attitude Era. Regardless, while Taz may have technically introduced tapping out in North America first via ECW, Ken Shamrock was the man who made it mainstream, making him (low-key) one of the most important wrestlers in the history of the business, in my opinion. Just think of how many amazing moments came from a simple tap out, and it all started with a man who loved going "DAAAAAA!!!!!".

Great comment, all good points. I personally always liked this match, as I thought it did a good job of putting Ken over; as he was one of the only people I had ever seen make Taker actually shout out in pain, as for years he had always been practically silent. Even the fact that Taker needed help to beat him, seemed to elevate him as a threat... I just think his ship had already sailed by this point, and they never really capitalised on what they had. With the right mouthpiece to support him, he could have been a top contender. If he had his own Heyman equivalent, I could have easily seen him do a program with Austin. Maybe a sort of fight promotor/boxing manager type. Then the manager and Austin do the trash talking while Shamrock stays stoic and strong, getting the occasional "snapping" and beatdown on Austin... all culminating on a PPV win for Stone Cold, and finally getting his hands on the manager. For the rubber match, you could escalate the violence and build-up to a more no-holds-barred main event, and Austin, out of his depth, has to resort to hitting him with everything, including the kitchen sink. It's just occurred to me, that it could even have been Vince as the manager figure in this case. Just have Shamrock as Vince's top guy, and push him as the genuine threat he should have been. Might have been better than some of the iffy main events we had around then. For instance, instead of losing to Billy Gunn in the KOTR, he could have been against Austin, replacing the ladder match. I'm not sure why I've written all of this. This was the most I've thought about wrestling in years.

Is this actually a serious take? "Tapping out" had been a thing for decades in American pro wrestling. There were MANY notable pro wrestlers with submission finishers. Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, Greg Valentine, Bob Backlund. Sgt. Slaughter, Iron Sheik, Chris Benoit, and many, MANY more. Bret Hart alone was THE master of submission wrestling in the 90s, and is arguably the greatest technical wrestler of all time. Tazz nor Shamrock, as much as I like both, ABSOLUTELY did not "introduce slower, more technical matches" to North America. How can this even be a serious take? It's almost as if Bret Hart, or his many matches/feuds with HBK, Undertaker, Owen Hart, Diesel, Backlund, etc .etc., just didn't happen.

Ken Shamrock is one of my all-time favorite wrestlers. Glad to see him get a spotlight. He truly deserves a HOF induction just for being a pioneer of the MMA hybrid wrestlers that's the norm now, starting tapouts in WWE, and being a great part of the Attitude Era boom.

Ken is one of those guys where had he come in in 95 or 96 or later on in 2002 he wouldve been a force to be reckoned with. Despite not growing up in the attitude era and being young enough that i learned about it through the wwe 13 game, i loved ken immediately and have grown to appreciate his work a lot. Edit: loving the zane lore we are getting here. Really interesting to hear about why ken resonated so much with you

Hey Mr. Zane, you probably won’t catch this comment. But thanks for going over my favorite Attitude Era Star Ken Shamrock. He brought legitimacy to the WWF and helped so much in winning back the audience during the Monday Night Wars. He’s beginning to be recognized as one of the greats in WWF history, but was so often forgotten when the Attitude Era was discussed previously. I wish we could have gotten an ankle lock vs ankle lock fight between Angle and Shamrock at one point. When I briefly had a Twitter account I said the to Kurt Angle and he favorited my tweet. It was a feather in my cap, and just went to show how much Ken was respected by other wrestlers. Even if they never faced him in the ring.

As much as I wanted him to stay, by 1999 he was past giving a main event push. The time to push Shamrock was late 1997-mid 1998. By 1999 The Rock and Triple H were bigger stars, Mankind was in the world title picture. Big Show was there. Angle came in toward the end and got a mega push.

Man I remember going to bed upset watching Stephanie McMahon so scared (amazing acting on her part) with Undertaker's symbol on her forehead and then Austin being the one to save her. It was emotional for me as a kid and seeing that clip brought back those memories. On a side note, great episode Brian! I personally loved Shamrock in the UFC and WWE. He truly deserved better in professional wrestling and should of been better utilized. If Shamrock was in his pro wrestling prime today, imagine the stories we would have with this new merger. I remember Shamrock returning to TNA and looking like a jacked up Al Bundy haha but he still looks great for his age. Shamrock deserves his flowers when it comes to professional wrestling at the end of the day and hopefully that day will come sooner than later.

I always thought it was pretty impressive that he was only there for about two years but he was held in pretty high esteem. Remember back in 98, 99 and WWE needed to put a wrestler some sort of product, they always seemed used the same guys. Austin, Rock, Taker, Kane and Ken Shamrock. To be grouped in with them is pretty damn good

Shame that he's been buried by WWE history, he was one of the few people who seemed legit unhinged and dangerous. I was worried he was going to snap someone's ankle off when I was a kid. A huge pioneer for MMA/pro wrestling crossover and a memorable figure during the hottest time in the business. Yet you would never even know he existed now if you watched the last 20 years of WWE, even his finisher is now associated with someone else.

Ken Shamrock is one of my favorites, I still hope to see him come back one more time in WWE. At least long enough to get him in the 2k games. I loved 2k16 because he was in it as well as Dlo Brown and others we usually don't get in the games.

@Stretch24-7 pride and ufc he was there when it began. He semi retired then went to wwf then went back for a few years to ufc. He was one of the inaugural champions in ufc. Then him and Dan Severn ended up going to wwf. Their ufc background was the only reason wwf got him. It was in the video.

Hes an unsung hero of the Attitude Era, one of my favourites i wished he stayed longer in the WWF and im exactly the same Brian as a fellow Aspie i get what you mean. JR has mentioned on his podcast they were close to firing Shamrock in 1998 due to missing flights and events, he enjoyed the night life too much. JR even mentioned he was supposed to be in the 2000 Royal Rumble but he was replaced by Bob Backlund instead and they were even close to resigning Shamrock in 2002 but he didnt like the offer he was given so he went to TNA instead. I hope he gets in the WWE HOF one day.

Ken was one my late 90s favorites and his entrance theme was always my go to for CAWs in wrestling video games I wish he last just another year. Ken vs Benoit/Jericho/Malenko/Guerrero/Angle. Man. Just missed it

Ken is my favorite wrestler from the attitude era, imo he was and still is so underrated and never got the WWF star run he deserved. A great fighter, a great wrestler, and from what I hear a nice guy too! Definitely one of a kind, and no I don’t mean RVD

Super underrated wrestler who should have been a top star and long term legend. Watch Shamrock vs Rock at WM 14. Such a tight match. He was over big time and had the look, the ring skills, a marketable gimmick and name etc. Although he was lousy on the mic, in a different time, they would have protected him and focused away from that weakness. I remember the exact moment it all went downhill. He did a segment with HHH/DX where he screwed up his lines and rather than HHH doing his job as a heel (helping the face get over), he mocked Shamrock in an amusing way that did more to get HHH over as the face. Then they did the Corporation parody with DX, and it totally buried his entrance and mannerisms, further tanking his stock. Then they turned him heel and put him in the background with the Corporation and he fizzled out until leaving. But imagine in a different time/environment with different talent, he could have been a multi-time World Champion.

The night Shamrock hunted down and freed Stephanie while still covered in blood from the Brood was the most badass thing I had ever seen in wrestling, and is probably still up there now. It even popped my stoic too-cool-to-be-excited roommate, and you all know how tough that is!

This really is the golden age of Brian Zane. Great video. Great comedic pauses. Almost English levels of wit. As for Shamrock, I love the guy. And I don't think he fully gets the recognition he deserves in combat sports.i just wish his premier late era feud against Tito Ortiz in UFC came at a time he was younger, less shop-worn and more competitive. The build to that fight was as good as any. I also felt it never quite worked out for him in WWE, but I put this on WWE creative. If they can't make Shamrock a major star then something is seriously wrong. He had the look, the athleticism, the promo ability. He did quite well, but it should have been great.

I personally would love to see him in the WWE hall of fame. I was only a baby when Shamrock was in the WWF, but I was always fascinated by what I saw in archival footage over the years.

Actually a dull knife is much more dangerous than a sharp one... to the person using it, specifically while cooking or opening packages. Mundane utility stuff, y'know. A properly sharp knife takes less effort to cut, meaning you can focus on maintaining control of the blade and avoid putting excessive force into it, but a dull knife will still be able to shred through flesh while being much more difficult to control, thus increasing the risk of self injury.

I thought Shamrock was awesome. He had legit fighting cred, looked great, was a great wrestler and had an awesome gimmick. I am a sucker for a berserker character (going into an uncontrollable rage, not the New Gen Viking guy) so I loved it when Shamrock would go crazy and attack everyone. It is a shame WWE is acting like he never existed, even though he was an important part of the Attitude Era, basically the top midcarder. I wonder if there is some secret bad blood between him and the company because he is a shoe-in for HoF.

Ken personally feels Triple H not liking him essentially made him a persona non grata. He tried to send feelers out in the past and always got met with "not interested". He found it weird that so many people come back if even for a nostalgia pop, but not him.

Had Shamrock been around in the territory days, he would have been huge. There are few men more believable as Shamrock when it comes to legit toughness.
