This is a game changer. Details like these make a world of difference, just because i assumed all my life how a correct hammer on and pull off was and wasted so much time & nerves over years. Barely tried, i just added a few BPM on my technique as well as a cleaner articulation effortlessly. I feel i'm on the right path, thank you!

I have been playing guitar for 12 years, written, composed and recorded 2 albums. Have spent the last 10 years looking for videos to explain hammerons and pulldowns and I have never found the solution until I found this video. This makes totally sense. I akways thought there was something wrong with me/my hand, but no. Now I just have to get to work!!!!!

Thank you so much for this, I am a self taught guitarist and songwriter and I am currently trying to learn ‘River Flows In You’ and it includes multiple hammer-ons and pull-offs and I’ve always thought i’d never be able to do them (hammer-ons in particular) because whenever i attempted them how i had assumed they were done, it just sounded quiet and rubbish 😂 Now with just these few key techniques that you’ve given, it has completely transformed my hammer-ons and pull-offs….Or should i say ‘Pull-downs’ 😊 Thank you! 😁

Love your content firstly learning lots. I have a fake fender aka (squire) it's been modified a bit all pots and pickups have been swapped out. It's got humbuckers on bridge from a 78 Ibanez destroyer an neck is Seymore dunken humbucker an mid is a single Seymore. It's a strat but can sound like a telly an be as sensitive. What I don't like is the selection switch. I'm constantly hitting it an changing position. Any suggestions to practice for strumming so I stop hitting the switch? I know the sound will change if I did it, but wondering if a les paul style epiphone would be a better electric option for me. My acoustic is a Takamine jasmine an that's great

That's a common situation for strat players. I almost exclusively play a strat and have been able to avoid that by strumming more vertically than in a half-circle shape. At the bottom of my downstroke, my hand is between the neck and middle pickup, exactly below where it is at the top of the stroke. If you're hitting the switch you're probably strumming more toward the butt of the guitar and less vertically...which also means you're changing the pick angle as you go through each string. That can give you a tonal and volume difference between all the strings. I'd try to strum more vertically than you currently are.

Nice video. You could make it a little shorter, especially in the beginning when you describe the hammer-on. A hammer has a fixed head, like your finger when it is in its bent position. Then you are just finger picking with the fret hand for pull offs.

hey max, great video! I would like to ask you something about pull off. I have thicks strings and on the 6th and 5fth string when I'm pulling off something my pulling off is making me bend the string. This technique of pull off is something like picking with the right hand and after attacking the string with the pick letting rest the pick on the next string but making it with the left hand?

Yes, that's basically what you're trying to do...essentially plucking the string with your left hand. Pulling down is always better then pulling "off". As far as bending the string goes, it's because you don't have enough ability to do opposing motion in your fingers. This is a result of not enough finger independence. When you're pulling down with one finger, the other finger must remain still...instead it's moving with the pull off finger downward. Great lesson. So where I really have problems with hammering on is with bar or partial bar chords. The bar isn’t the problem, but getting good enough or strong enough strong to fret contact when multiple fingers are hammering on from the bar. Any help? Thank you.

I've been having this problem for a while now where my pinky is inaccurate during hammer-ons, like sometimes i just miss the strings that i need to hit, I'm also sure I have the same technique as u taught in this video. Do you have any tips for this? Thanks

Yeah, you're almost certainly using the other knuckles besides your big knuckle to try and do the hammer-on. That causes you to have to aim, and ultimately you'll miss trying it that way. Yes definitely! Think about pushing upward with your ring finger as you pull downward with your pinky. Essentially forcing the string to go in two different directions.

Yeah, it's not easy but learning how your anatomy works can be the thing that makes all the difference. I've found that by studying how our tendons, bones and muscles are formed I can design practice routines that don't fight my anatomy but rather work with it in order to maximize my results.

In acoustic guitar double hammer on almost sound nothing... Can you please demonstrate double hammer-on on acoustic guitar. Idea of hammer on is, strike on a previous note and sustain that vibrations through the upper notes... Is not that correct ??

Yes, that's correct, but it is definitely possible and can be very musical on acoustic guitar...it's just much harder because you must be more accurate and powerful when you attack the string.

Ok this helped me further already, BUT: I'm stuck with trying pull-offs only with a downward scale over 4 strings. I'm trying to do a legato run from B-[15, 13, 11] to G-[14, 12, 11] to D-[14, 12, 10] to A-[13, 12, 10]. The problem i'm getting stuck with is that this down-pulling for a pulloff is counter to the motion to the next string. Is this just a practice issue, or is there another way to pulloff in the other direction somehow?

No, you can only do pull-offs downward (toward the ground). You have to relax back upward after the pull-off so you can be ready to use that finger on the next string

Every time I do the pull-offs I am bending the string down, taking it out of tune. How can I avoid this?

This is a common problem and can be avoided with a bit of practice. Try doing a pull-off by slowly increasing the downward pressure, at the same time imagine pushing up with the finger you're pulling off to. Essentially try to make your fingers go in opposite directions. Be careful about over-exaggerating this though, you can easily begin to bend the string upward if your not too careful. So practice slowly and by pushing upward (a little bit) you should be able to keep your finger static in one place.
