@@NailCareerEducation Your wrong 😭 that’s not the cuticle. The little bits of white skin underneath the nail fold is the cuticle. You pushed back the nail fold.
@wendigo1919
@wendigo1919 Жыл бұрын
Just to gently educate anyone curious... What one is actually gently pushing back is called the "proximal nail fold" or you can just call it the nail fold. And you should never cut the proximal nail fold. This causes that healthy tissue trauma, and it turn make it grow back thicker and harder. A mistake I see many nail techs make. What you want to do is remove the dead tissue that grows onto the nail plate: THIS is what is called the cuticle. Always good to teach everyone correct terminology, I think. :)

please be more specific when talking about that area because it causes a lot of confusion, the skin you pushed back is the (keratinised) proximal nail fold (or just living skin if you dont wanna use a fancy name) and the tissue you removed is cuticle. they are not both cuticle

If you are not used to having nail folds pushed back, then they can be stiffer and more painful to move. The benefit to having a mobile nail fold is that it allows you to scrape away cuticle from the nail plate, which makes your polish last longer and makes it easier to get closer to the skin with the polish and looks more seamless. To keep your nail folds mobile, just wait until after a shower or bath, and gently push them back. At least a few times a week. After a time or two they will easily move. Nail oil also helps keep them pliable.

I suggest using a cuticle remover instead of a dry manicure (mines are the same after years of nail biting) doing it dry can really hurt. Once the remaining cuticle has soften you can trim the excess

I have a glass cuticle cleaner/pusher and while I prefer the metal because it’s less abrasive and much faster, using the glass to buff the cuticle away is much gentler than scraping. My proximal nail fold is so sensitive, sometimes the metal hitting the skin hurts or I accidentally cut it (not deep enough to cause blood but still sore). So glass for me, even though it takes longer.

@MissMoosycakes
@MissMoosycakes Жыл бұрын
Trimming them makes them grow back harder and bigger! It's like how you can develop callouses on your feet when the skin is irritated by your shoes- the skin around your nail feels under attack when cut, so it grows harder to try and protect itself. Unfortunately that means hard, dry, messy cuticles that you feel even more need to cut. But the more you cut them, the more they will grow back harder and not looking like how you want them to. Do you use cuticle oil? One thing that helps me manage my cuticles is applying cuticle oil after washing my hands. I put a drop on my nail plate near the cuticle area, then use my finger to spread it over the skin next to the nail, bringing it up the side walls towards the free edge and smoothing any messy skin areas down (imagine like you're trying to "train" your cuticles to lay flat). You will have a difficult transition period while your skin adapts to being treated well and nourished/conditioned rather than cut (aka they might look messy for a bit) but in the long term it can help you SO much and can totally replace cutting your skin. It's also a lot safer! The area of skin that people call the "cuticle" and that people mistakenly cut off is actually called the eponychium, and it has an important role in creating a seal between the skin and the nail plate. It is live skin, and it is risky to cut it- aside from the hardening/messy cuticle issue, you are also risking infection and breaking the protective seal. The TRUE cuticle is the almost invisible layer of dead skin cells that is left on the nail plate by the eponychium as the nail grows out. Very little need for cutting or nipping at all- it's more like you're gently scraping that dead skin off the nail plate to help your nail products adhere better to the nail 😸

You should not remove cuticles, they protect our nails if you remove it then bacteria or fungi will occur. Cutting your cuticles can also cause damage or injury to your nail bed. Although nail bed injury usually isn't too severe, it can cause deformities in your nail or cause your nail to crack and break.
