Get started with Modern Controls in Canvas Power Apps

This tutorial video introduces the new modern controls available for Canvas Power Apps.
Modern controls in Canvas Power Apps are a new set of controls that are based on Microsoft's own Fluent design system. Modern controls are quicker and simpler for makers to configure. Modern controls are designed with a focus on accessibility, usability, and performance (fast) that makes them visually appealing, highly functional, and intuitive to use.
The initial release of modern controls includes button, checkbox, date picker, tab list, progress bar, info button, spinner, radio group, link, checkbox, badge etc.
Theming - Designed with theming in mind. Although not part of the initial launch, support for theming and per control styling is coming to the preview soon.

With this change and enabling of modern look and feel in model driven apps, I guess embedding of custom page/canvas app in model driven apps will look more consistent as they seem to be sharing the same controls. This was much needed !!

Three things that were highly required tab list, progress bar and spinner rest were available in MS Teams power apps which I used to copy and use them in my Canvas apps.

Question: I don't see the option to change the font size on of these controls. Am I the only one? If so, do you know if there are plans to enable more properties like font size, BG color, forecolor, etc.?

Hi Reza, thanks for introducing these new features! I started working with power apps about two weeks ago as part of my thesis. Your videos were sooo helpful these past days!!! I am currently investigating how to drive employee adoption of digital collaboration and communication tools. As hardly anyone in our company is working with the office 365 tools, I try to showcase the possibilities. Do you perhaps have tip what kind of approaches people respond to? Generally, the staff has some digital affinity as we are based in Norway. Since you have been dealing with these tools for so long you probably gained some implementation insights. Hope you can give some brief advice or recommend some material :) keep up the great work!!! All the best from Oslo

Hi, I am currently working in Japanese company and HQ wants to launch digital transformation initiatives and we tried to move to Power Platform and I found out a few things along the way. In order to your company to successfully adopt power platform you will need: 1) your CEO must be 100% financially committed to this project. 2) you need to have head of IT who understands low code platform and will be able to develop citizen developers program; 3) consensus. You will need to get everyone one board. One thing in my experience is 100% employees are on Excel and if you can't utilize power platform to its 110% max potential there's a chance Excel will beat it. 4) you must stay calm and be willing to deal with end users.

A quick question, once the new modern controls have been enabled is there a way to update the controls of an already created form? I dislike the standard date picker and would like to get the nicer modern looking one in place for my current app.

There is no automatic way to update. You would need to replace the controls manually.

Hi Reza, many thanks for your well-illustrated contents, these helped a lot! I have an issue related to Modern Controls, whereby I cannot see the 'animated designs' of text inputs for examples when the canvas app is published. In Preview Mode before publishing, i can see it though. Is there any additional settings to be modified? Thanks

Thanks Reza. I did use some of the Fluent controls previously by coping over from a Teams App. One thing that I really didn't like, was that they seem to have missed off the 'Reset' property. Just like your other video on resetting controls, I already use variables to reset my controls as its so easier/less risky. Am I just missing them somewhere, or has Microsoft missed this property off?

Fantastic video and already started to use the modern controls in my latest project and absolutley love it. I do have one question however in that I use the tab list to create a tabbed form and in the old version I used a Set function to create a global varialbe and set the visible property of the datacard as FormTab=1, FormTab=2 etc. and then when you go into the form the button had a Set variable like Set(FormTab,1). How do i do this using the modern control tab list? My datacard visible property is TabList2_3.Selected.ID=1

Great content as usual Reza but, it is so frustrating that nearly all of the new modern controls can not be styled to fit into the design of my apps. I nearly always build great looking dark themed apps and these new controls are pretty much unusable for me until we can change things such as the background colour and font colour etc. I wonder how long it will be before we bring the ability to style these controls to app builders?

Thanks for the Video. Unfortunately the new Date Picker is not available in my Tenant (based in the E.U.). I had tested in the past by copying it from Teams and noticed that it only had mm/dd/yyyy format. It is really disappointing that this new Date Picker is not available in Regions with dd/mm/yyyy format.

Hi Reza. I've been following the progress of the PowerApps CAT team Creator's Kit. The controls there look fantastic, though I was waiting for some clearer direction from Microsoft (monthly releases have stopped; issues piling up; no communication from CAT team). Are you part of that CAT team? Should we be looking at that anymore, or wait for the platform team to add the controls (hopefully achieving parity with the CK)?

These look great, but having played a little with them, they feel unfinished for productions use. Things that would need to change before I could use them in my applications are 1) the ability to upload a fluent UI theme and have it applied across the application. Currently you cannot control font size or colours well on these new controls. Secondly, and this is a big one for a lot of us outside the US, is the ability to change the date format, which is currently missing.

For some reason, I do not see the Modern Controls tab in the left side navigation panel. I see Classic, Mixed Reality and other menus, but Modern Control is not there. I so see a yellow notice at the bottom of the panel informing me that Modern Controls is being used. Modern Control is active under the General panel. Which Input Text box do you use for modern control? The classic version does not have "value" as an option - only default.

1 - Make sure modern controls are enabled in general settings 2 - search for controls in panel and see if u get any modern controls. Example: tab

It looks like the tab list control will save a lot of time when creating separate tabs and side navigation menu. I enabled the modern controls in the upcoming features (version 3.23034.13), but still not able to see these in the Insert menu. For context, I use PowerApps for Teams in Asia region. Maybe this preview is not fully released globally? If so, why am I seeing the option to enable it?

awesome video as always Reza! thanks! I used to be able to reset classic checkboxes for all rows on the grid/gallery in canvas app. but I am now scratching my head using the new modern control checkbox because the Default and Reset properties are now gone. And there doesn't seem to be a way to bring back the Classic tab/controls via the PowerApps settings. Would you know of a way to reset modern checkboxes on the grid and unmark all in one click? Thanks in advance!

Modern controls switch is now in General tab of settings. Modern controls dont have a reset option but you can call the reset function on them. Checkbox has checked property I think. Its a different way of doing things.

Hi Reza, thanks for sharing. I have tried the new date field but I have problem Patch the field to a SharePoint date column. It seams that you need to patch it in a different way than the old date field. Do you have any input regarding this issue. Best regards Christer Russberg

You cannot open those zip file. You have to import them. Check documentation on how to import canvas apps.

When I tried modern components a couple of days ago, colours were not customizable at all. Even if I changed the theme. Oors still blue. I can see in you last screenshots that colour changed. Was it fixed or I missed something ?

One Query, I have two Gallery List with Names, Gallery 1 Consist all the Names, Gallery 2 has to be compare with Gallery 1 Names and List the names which is not present in Gallery 1, I'm searching internet for solution, did not find any solution. Hi Reza, I downloaded your sample file and experienced that in the tree view it is not possible to open other screens. In Edit Mode, everytime i click on Form, Search, Delete Screen it brings me back to HomeScreen. Is this caused by the DefaultTab Setting?

That is due to defaulttab setting. When editing the app, preview the app, go to the specific screen and then go back to edit mode

Hi Reza, I'm trying to get the modern date picker to show the last date selected as a default. I'm using a patch function in the onChange, to update a Sharepoint list with the date selected - which it does. However, as soon as I click away from the picker, it reverts to blank. I've tried using the Value field in Advanced to write a Last(Sort(sharepointlistname,sharepointcolumnname,descending)) type function but Powerapps doesn't like it. Is there a way to do this?

Last(Sort(sharepointlistname,sharepointcolumnname,descending)) is not a good option as what if some other user also adds data at the same time? You should get the information from the Patch function by storing the response in a variable and then using it to get the value. First check and see if you are even getting the data value back. Print it in a label control to see it and then work your way up from there. I do not have a video reference on this scenario and would have to try it out to provide guidance. I would recommend checking on the forums at powerusers.microsoft.com/ in case someone has done something similar.

Have not tried it. I would say no since it does not even have searching features like a combo box.
