This is one of the best (and cheaper) methods that I’ve seen. I’m going to try it. What do you do when your tomato plant gets taller than the T-posts? Do you cut the tops to keep them from continuing to grow?

I’ve used that way for years and the tomatoes get so heavy it pulls the vine over between the string. You’ll find that you need to tie the string together on each side of the plant to keep it upright. I went back to the way you first mentioned. One line with down lines. It used ALOT less string and was easier in the end. Plus I do my best not to use any twine that’s not natural. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for letting me know. I tried the vertical string method last year, will see how this goes this year. Or i will tie the string together with another string when the tomatoes get heavy, will post an update.

Hi Jag! Great video, concise and informative! But, a couple of questions if you don't mind? I am curious about the weed barrier. I am sure it's very effective, but won't it prevent you from adding compost or other organic amendments each year? Also, good tips regarding metal posts and nylon twine! And using the PVC pipe is genious! But I am curious as to why you didn't 'florida weave' the plants (basically wind in front and behind each plant in one direction and behind and in front in the other) instead of a staight line on both sides. Won't they be apt to lean side to side?
@DaisyCreekFarms
@DaisyCreekFarms 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sue, I can add pelleted organic fertilizer through the holes in the weedblock and also run compost tea via drip lines. I have added enough compost as organic matter in the rows to last years. Florida weave works but you have to keep up with the plant growth, however having straight lines on both sides allows to pull plants anytime and I can use the same strings next year as well as it would be easy to remove the plants after the season is over and the strings won't loose tension.

Would this work for vertically growing zucchini or butternut squash?
@DaisyCreekFarms
@DaisyCreekFarms 2 жыл бұрын
It would, you might need to have tposts space closer and go in and out of plants alternatively with string.

don't think this method will hold the plants very well once they start fruiting heavily on each level. I'm pretty sure there's a reason why professional gardeners use individual string to stake a single tomatoes. I'm pretty sure they tried pretty much every method out there, trying to find the best and simplest method
@DaisyCreekFarms
@DaisyCreekFarms 2 жыл бұрын
This is Florida Weave method and it is used professionally. The individual string or stake is used professionally in greenhouses. Will let everyone know how this holds up one we get tomatoes on the plants. Wil be interesting to see.
