Get the Amiga online with a Plipbox

Tonight I am trying to get my beefy Amiga 500 online with the help from the plipbox. After a lot of strugles I managed to get it work and even downloaded a modern browser (AmiFox) with the help from frogfind.

Hi there @Proteque-CBN Thanks for another really interesting video. I liked the fact that despite experiencing some issues getting it all set-up, you still showed your trials and tribulations in finally getting the Plipbox up and running successfully. I hope you don't mind, but can I offer another suggestion ? In the show notes / video notes I think it would be really helpful to list - 1. The issues you faced in getting the Plibox working. 2. The steps you took to get it working properly. Again, please don't think that I'm being negative or awkward. I hope you take my suggestions as constructive feedback, that's all, nothing more. Keep up your hard work, these videos are brilliant. I thoroughly enjoy watching them. Take it easy mate.

Glad you liked it, and thanx for the constructive feedback. Allways welcome. I have a proper fix for the next video. Got some tip by a watcher about a hardware tip. I did try to not mix music and vocals in this one like you mentioned was distractive and made it harder to catch what I said, in an earlier comment. (Or did I mix you with someone?)

@@proteque You're correct (it was me, that mentioned the audio mix in your last video). In tbis video, You were clear, and I could hear you easily. So thanks very much for taking onboard my comments from the last vid. It's much appreciated. I'm looking forward to your next video, especially as it has the new fix too. Keep up the great work !

7:55 Hi - I discovered that there is a line missing from the plipbox to reset the Arduino, signaled by the Amiga. The way I addressed this problem was by soldering a line to connect the Amiga parallel port's RESET (pin 16) to the Arduino's RST (of which there are two pins). (I will send a photo of this to you by email.) This was described in an amibay post by SM1WZV in 2017. (Link not included to avoid KZfaq's comment delete problem; again, I will email you the link.) With this connected, by running a serial console (USB) to the Arduino, I can see that it is now resetting, signaled by the Amiga. It works for me on my 2000 and now my plipbox interface seems to come up reliably, with DHCP even, after Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga or after issuing the Amiga OS 3.2 "reboot" command in the CLI. Yay!

Wow thanx a lot for sharing! This problem has really given me some strugles. I am late to the game but yet somehow missed this info when researching.

@@proteque No problem, nearly "everyone" missed it. I actually stumbled across it searching for details about the parallel port's reset pin so I could figure it out myself. Aside: I have a slightly different version of the plipbox than you do, having the Arduino and shield oriented in the other direction so the ethernet jack faces backwards, but the reset is missing from both sort. I know who created the board I have, but have not found a way to contact him directly (I met him in person at a vintage computer festival) to suggest the board be revised to add this reset line. I guess we should make an effort to do that. Peace.
