New to the hybrid world since buying my 2013 RX 450h a month ago. I'm definitely trying the pulse and glide method. The only problem I have is my engine kicks on almost immediately as I pull away from a stop even though I try my best to start very slowly. I always drive in ECO mode as well. Bums me out. Love the car so far.

I have the same rxh. You are absolutely correct, the engine does kick in very often when coming off a set of lights. It’s a heavy car and the battery can’t put in enough power to give decent acceleration. I prioritise my fuel saving to suburban driving and get about 7.5l/100km, overall. Tyres pressure’s maintained 10% above spec. Also, in cold weather, I only turn on heating after the engine warms up

Average consumption of 2.0 diesel engines is still the cheapest way to go here in Europe. Electricity also went up so even EV as Tesla is expensive in compare to small diesel engines. My lowest consumption on ECo mode was 4.3 liters on that German 2.0tdi engine. What can I say...I would like Lexus NX300 but at 25k-30.000km per year diesel still wins.

I enjoyed the somewhat helpful tips on driving habits however, two mistakes I'd like to point out. In the winter time, you do not want to keep the externally cooled battery cold because it has a negative temperature coefficient NTC THIS MEANS THE WARMER THE BATTERY BECOMES THE LESS AMOUNT OF RESISTANCE THERE IS WITHIN THE BATTERY. This simply means that the warmer the battery gets the easier it is for the electrons to flow through the battery into the rear motor for the rear tires only. The same can be set for the summertime and the summertime. It's best to keep the batteries as cool as possible by keeping the interior cab air-conditioning on this will help cool the batteries because when the batteries get too warm doesn't flow as well as when they are at the optimum, temperature of 20°C Celsius is when everything in the vehicle works perfectly fine including the engine, motor and batteries underneath the rear seat. The other factor I'd like to point it was you mentioned that from 90 to 120 km/h you mentioned that consumer reports found that hybrid vehicles on average used 25% more fuel at 120km/h than at 90km/h. Well 17:54 , those consumer reports analysts are true geniuses because it just so happens to be that at 120km/h you're going exactly 25% faster than when you're at 90km/h. You simply gave me the math from what they found and that simply shows that it's a linear scale. It is an exact upward linear scale from speed being on the bottom of the graph and fuel consumption being on the left side of the graph with a 45° linear rise in fuel consumption depending on speed with a hybrid engine. 120/4 is 30km and 30km is 25% of 120km. So you might have to make corrections moving forward on those two factors. If you want to do the research look up any battery doesn't matter what kind of battery it has an NTC it's actually the only 2 components within the hybrid vehicle is a starter battery and battery for the rear axle motor. Vehicles employee a safety mechanism when they reach too cold of a temperature they will actually heat themselves up with a blanket underneath the batteries just so you can get something out of the batteries at -20°C if parked outside. Then, as the battery warms up, it will act more efficiently. That being said, the pulse and glide technique will be far more efficient in the spring and fall temperatures that are more ideal for battery performance. Thank you for the video and keep up the good work with tips.

I have the 20” f sport wheels and run flats on my hybrid and I’m getting 7.4l/100km. I have owned a hybrid for the last 12 years (2010 prius). I have used these tips for years and can say they work well. HOWEVER, having larger wheels makes a huge difference I find. I have been doing more highway driving, which is impacting my efficiency, but I’m finding it very hard to get anything under 7L/100. Another big factor is terrain. If there are large hills the NX is a beast to haul up and you’ll burn a lot more fuel. I’m pretty disappointed with the efficiency so far. Going from a Prius it’s not a fair comparison, but I expected better. I’m guessing the 20” wheels are a big factor.

You are right the bigger wheels are going to have an effect, but my guess is it’s about 5%. If you’re doing more highway driving, then that’s about what I’m getting as well. To be honest with you in the city that’s where you can really get great fuel economy out of this SUV.

Thanks Michael 👌 I know there are a lot of people who hate the run flats as they are noisier and overall have a stiffer ride. I agree, but to me the difference has been negligible. Though I do agree with you, I would have a little worry about long trip but if you have CAA or another service that helps. The issue is now is it worth the cost to switch it over. For me personally, the answer is no right now.

In Europe, the base versions come standard with 18" rims and normal tires with a repair kit. The result is less weight and smoother grip of the tires on the road than the runflat tires on 20" rims, hence, slightly better fuel economy. Not much, but as very well explained in the video, everything counts and all added, it makes a difference !

Great video thank you so much I live in Canada, I'm in Aurora Ontario. I own a 2021 ux 250h and was wondering about drive modes and when to use them? The dealership told me to use Eco when I'm at a constant speed on the highway and stop and go traffic use the normal mode, is this correct? Another question is initially my climate control was set to auto and I turned it off because it was turning on the AC. I was wondering is it best to turn off the AC for better fuel economy or is it only turning on the HVAC compressor and not actually the air conditioning. Would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thanks

By the way, the typical Toyota/Lexus driving techniques that are very well explained in the video equally apply to the NX450h+. When driven in EV, it optimizes the EV range and when in HV, it optimizes the fuel economy in the exact same way as on traditional hybrid cars.

What gas did you use, regular or premium? What temperature outside it was? I think your mpg should be better. Unless your engine was cold when you start trip. Just tested RAV4 hybrid for 13 km. Rural roads. No traffic lights, only 6 stops. Some hills. 28 degrees Celsius, no AC. Basically almost perfect condition for hybrid, except hills. Come out 4 liter per 100 km or 58 US mpg. This is off topic so i apologize in advance, but i couldn't find the answer anywhere online. Do you think i can go with 17 inch for the winter? I will get the same offset (ET35) and overall diameter. My only concern is will the 17s provide enough clearance for the brakes. Don't want to run the risk of rubbing the brakes. My friend has the 1st gen NX and 17s work perfectly fine.

A little bit of additional precision on this subject : I had a gen1 NX with 17" rims and 225/65R17 tires, fine. However, with the gen2 NX, the same wheels (17" rims with 225/65R17 tires) are NOT compatible. And with the gen2 NX, there is no version that has 17" rims with appropriate tire dimensions in the standard specifications. Having said that, in theory, on gen2 NX, instead of the 18" rims with 235/60R18 or the 20" rims with 235/50R20, you could mount 17" rims with 235/65R17 tires (not the 225/65R17 from the gen1 NX). If you do so, make sure you verify your insurance and your warranty will not be voided. This may depend on local regulations.
@qichen5316
@qichen5316 Жыл бұрын
@Jean-Marc Delbos ya as long as the 17 inch rims are not too small that they are rubbing the brakes, I can work with all the other specs. The offset has to around 35, and for tire width you can go narrower to 225 if you want but just have to get the correct sidewall so the overall diameter is the same as the factory 18s and 20s. In fact, a lot of experts suggest going with narrower tires in the winter because narrower rubbers cut through snow a lot easier, hence perform better...

@peterwolf2832
@peterwolf2832 3 ай бұрын
Everything works by electric on Lexus hybrid vehicles! The AC compressor is powered by the hybrid battery which allows it to work without the engine running! And because it is powered electricly there is no drive belt attached to the engine that puts a drag on the engine even when the compressor is not engaged! The power steering is also electric so there is no power steering belt attached from the power steering pump to the crank shaft pulley which also reduces the drag on the engine and the water pump is also electricly operated which means that no drive belt is needed to spin the water pump and the less drag on the engine the greater the fuel economy! Every little bit helps towards achieving the CAFE standards for 2024 of 52.9 mpg! Now just think about driving 52 miles in a 3000 or more vehicle and only using 1 gallon of fuel? The department of transportation who determines the CAFE standards is simply living on fantasy island!

Hey @sonduren. Are you able to control your heated seats via the Lexus app?

I don’t have an option on my 2024 nx350h ultra luxury though. I’m using the iOS Lexus app. Did you have that option from the beginning or you ask the dealer to activate it for you?

@mikenbfc4115 that’s very odd. Had it from the start but let me double check. Yes just checked, when the seats and steering wheel are on auto they will turn on with the heating and remote start.

What should you do if you click the ev button near the shifter and the dash says ev mode couldn’t be turned on because of low battery, does it automatically turn on bc ev still displays on the dash even though it’s supposedly not turned on?
@carswithsonduren
@carswithsonduren Жыл бұрын
So you should not be pressing the EV button by yourself. I know it seems counterproductive right? After a lot of research, I have found out that actually, the computer will adjust when to use the battery and when to turn on the internal combustion engine to maximize fuel economy based on a variety of parameters. Our input actually messes that up not really sure why they included the button to be honest with you.

Oh I see, so just pulse and glide as you said and it will automatically switch between battery and engine, correct?

Wow so we are basically twinning it up right now love it :) Let’s share any cool quirks we learn along the way. Did you know there is a little compartment to the left of the steering wheel for storage and cards etc? I found that out recently and put our insurance paperwork in there.
