I watched a lot of narrow hem tutorials today and so far your method for starting is the easiest and cleanest! Thank you! I'm sewing handkerchiefs and they're not perfect however they look much, much nicer after using your method. I want to sew doll clothes as well, and this skill will be good to master.

@LiliAquinas
@LiliAquinas 4 жыл бұрын
@@karenneff4935, as Madam Sew stated in the video, you need to practice! Hardly anyone just pops the rolled hem foot onto their machine and makes a perfect rolled hem to start with! Another tip not mentioned in this video is to sew a straight stitch along the edge of the fabric, 1/8th inch, then go back and feed the fabric into the rolled hem scroll. The line of stitching already in place stabilizes the edge that you want to fold over, and helps it fold at the right place. Go very slowly. Decrease the speed that the machine sews, so you are forced to have the time to make the fabric guide properly. Slowly increase the speed at which you sew. I practiced enough that I could start the rolled hem on another piece of fabric butted up to the fabric I want rolled, and just continue stitching, making a backtack once I'm on the fashion fabric. Since I don't use a rolled hem frequently, I will often practice on scraps just to refresh my hands' muscle memory. Or, you could do a rolled hem by hand, because that's sort of not any easier than using the machine, but you can take it with you more easily to sew on while you might be knitting or reading instead.

Good morning and I want to thank you for explaining that one is curved and one is flat. I understand that the curved one rolls, but does the flat one do what the rolled one does? Maybe I am confused. After watching some videos, I understand it takes some getting used to this process. Do you think it would be easier for me to get the flat hem foot? I have a babylock which is similar to a brother. I only make quilts, some basic sewing etc, and do applique and embroidering. I have some basic kitchen flour sack towels that need to be cut in half and hemmed. Other than that I think it would be a good tool to have. Appreciate your video
@lynnaz41
@lynnaz41 2 жыл бұрын
For the flat hem foot you say to start, fold 1/8" but then you say double fold 1/8" (WHICH?) and sew next to the inner fold (is that towards the bulk of the fabric [left] and double folded ? Or towards the inside of the machine [right]...so I did a double fold but it will NOT fit into the curl so I tried single fold, no luck either way :-( I've been trying and trying different ways, tweezers, pulling the thread tails through to try and get it started... if my life depended on this I would be dead :-[ PLEASE post another video with close up shots, stills, and a camera angle not blocked by the working hand! I bought the whole set of feet specifically for the flat hemmer foot and can't get past it to trying the others...
