What are the Bears getting in their new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron? The Athletic's Michael-Shawn Dugar has been covering him in Seattle, and he joins Hoge & Jahns to shed some light on the good and the bad(?) of what Shane Waldron brings to Chicago.

As a Chicago guy, I vacationed in the Bay Area a couple of years ago and I was shocked how much dislike the media and fans had for Mike Shanahan....they thought the guy was a fraud. And all I could think about was how much I'd love for him to be the Bears coach. Groupthink is an amazing phenomenon. I'll wait to see how Waldron fares in Chicago before judging him on his last stop.

I have been reading a lot of the Seahawks fan social media pages and the vast majority of the fans there are happy that Waldron left. A lot of them complained about some of the same reasons Bears fans complained about Getsy (conservative run heavy, not utilizing the weapons to their full potential, too much screens, lots of 3 and outs, horrible on 3rd downs). I’m second guessing this hire.

The QB Fields was most compared to coming out of college Russell Wilson. Why? Russell likes to hold on to the ball, great long pass accuracy, mobile but takes sacks. Wilson and Fields do not fit in the Shanahan system. That said, Caleb Williams might be compared to Russell Wilson too. Caleb plays hero ball too. Is he willing to play in time? That is the question.
@Ebonysails
@Ebonysails 5 ай бұрын
@piteusx8440 I would have an issue with that comparison as Russell Wilson had far more college experience than Justin Fields. Justin Fields should have stayed in college. That covid year smashed that whole QB class. I've seen tape both ways on Williams. If you go back and look at Justin Fields stuff in college Day wasn't really asking much from him.

I'm also hopeful that he learned to overcome his weaknesses through previous experiences as a playcaller. He also talked about the Seahawks being bad on 3rd down and in the redzone. A lot of that could be the QB. If the Geno can't execute well in high-pressure situations, then the offense will be bad in those situations. You have to look at the tape to know if it's the QB, the OC, or both causing those problems. But Mike didn't give any specific examples to help make that clear. Unbelievably considering what’s happened the last 2 years, most Bears fans’ knee jerk reactions to new coaches or players is way too positive. I specifically remember a lot of people saying Getsy was a home run hire because he “mentored” Rodgers, and that sentiment lasted way less than 2 years. We don’t know who the other offensive assistants will be or even who the QB will be. After 14 without a playoff win, I advise Bears fans to have my attitude about new players and coaches - I’d love it if they succeed but I’ll believe it when I see it.

End of the day, Getsy was a bottom tier OC. Waldron, as Hugar explained, is an average OC- that's an upgrade. With an average offense we would have made the play offs this year. Geno is an average QB, you provide Waldron a better QB, whether that is Fields, who is arguably more talented, or CW, the ceiling is probably a top 5/10 offense and floor at top 20, i would take that in Chicagoland after what we have seen.

Dave Canales name is sorely missed in this conversation. Now fast forward to Canales being the OC for Mayfield this season and the O in Tampa ... People are going to blow smoke for Waldron because of PFF stats and the like, but he is nothing but a safe hire. Their run game was rubbish, you trade Fields - which is obviously 50/50 - do people really think Herbert can be the guy? Think this hire is smoke and mirrors again.

This guy is describing Luke Getsy. I’ll take a better version of Luke Getsy. It’s still an upgrade.

LOL - no one likes their OC. When Jahns goes on the Raiders podcast, he'll say the same thing about Getsy.

Who is this clown? Mr. I don't know the stats but here's the stats😆. This guy sounds like someone imitating a journalist. And Hoge & Jahns seem like they're falling for it.

Time will tell. An unsuccessful play doesn’t always equal “bad play call” sometimes and now I know this is a crazy concept but it can be because of poor player execution. And of course both.
