The other Derby people should have sat down and watched was the Black Country Derby West Brom vs Wolves. the premier league was able to market itself the way it did and change viewership and the way football in england is followed by fans by modeling it after the nfl in the states. tv deals with cable networks were where the money really was. the modernization of britain's telecom infrastructure in the late 80s/early 90s was a pretty large factor. the internet's success a decade later was also a major contributing factor.

The funniest thing about this hate is that these people are our neighbours, colleagues and friends any other day of the week, but when it comes to football…pure hatred! It’s dumb but that is the reality of the situation. In a way, playing your rivals every season probably eases those tensions.
