It's easy to get your Vitamix Ascent to detect your 20 and 8 oz containers. In this video, we'll show you the trick to get your Vitamix to read the attachment. Plus, some footage from our kitchen from before learning the method. Watch!

Maybe you read somewhere that the Vitamix Ascent struggles to detect 8 and 20 oz containers. Or maybe you bought the 8 or the 20 and can't figure out the trick to get you machine to read it.
Let me be the first to say, we feel your pain.
When we first got the 8 ounce Vitamix Ascent attachment, we had a hard time getting the machine to detect the container. Same thing with the 20.
We knew the arrows needed to be aligned. But we did not realize that the arrows needed to be aligned initially, too.
Here's what we learned: You should not need to over tighten it.
And you should not need to under tighten it. (In fact under tightening it is a recipe for disaster.)
But don't let our mishaps scare you. The 8 and 20 are great, easy to use, deliver great results.
If you line up the arrows initially and line up the arrows at the end the eight and 20 ounce containers are really easy for your vita mix to detect. Furthermore, you should not have any problem blending or removing the blade base.
We really do like these add-ons for the Vitamix Ascent, especially the 8 oz. Now that we know how to use them, we appreciate having them as a part of our Vitamix setup.

Arrow approach did not work for me but I found an easier way that will also work for people with weaker wrists. Threads do not engage when arrows lined up so you have to start elsewhere. Also strength required to twist into range may be too much for many. My approach is to tighten it to a comfortable lever before putting it onto my 3500 blender. Then put it on blender and further tighten it with both hands till detect is indicated on display. Also loosen it a bit using both hands while on the base before removing it. Works for me every time on both 8 and 20 ounce containers..

I figured out that too. You have to get the arrow away from the grey metal underneath the cup or bowl.

I figured I wasn't out any extra $$, so was not too concerned. But I didn't want them to just sit going to waste. I would never have figured this out without your help. Many Thanks. OMGosh you guys, we were wondering what was wrong with our Unit! They need this in the book!! OMGosh, we thought we had a registry problem, because we could get the main 64 oz container register as being on the machine, but not the 20 or the 8 oz. We thought we had to literally rush between the 64 oz container and the small one as quickly as possible to "find the smaller" containers! I am so darn glad you guys did this tutorial, because it sure isn't mentioned in the small booklet as what needs to be lined up! Thank you Lennie and Shalva! You saved us a call to VMix tomorrow!

This the best advice on how the Ascent base detects the 8oz containers. Truly guys thank you. I upgraded my Vitamix some months ago but only came to use the containers last week and to my surprise the base didn't recognise the container. I thought I made a mistake. I then watched endless videos about how the Ascent works, including the ones at Vitamix and no where I found an explanation, never mind as crystal CLEAR as you guys have put it in the video. THANK YOU. I agree with some people that this is an expensive kitchen equipment and it shouldn't be this difficult neither one should have to search the internet endlessly to find how how it is meant to work. However I still like it very much and think it is one of the best. So you have saved me a lot of frustration, annoyance and more importantly TIME. It is the most precious of all. THANK YOU.

The motor underneath lets off a slight smell and it's a little loud kzfaq.infoUgkxCKuMxLnvr6fJd_M4SE-n7trcGj3zEUHq but considering it's size and how hard it works to do the job, it's sort of expected. I assume the smell will go away over time. Overall, I love this cute little blender. The extra cups and lids are great too!

I was a bit apprehensive about buying these containers but after seeing your video I bought them and followed you're advise. My Vitamix recognised the containers and there was no spilage straight away the frist time I used them. Super!!!

The arrows do not matter. Fill your cup and attach blade assembly (don't worry about the arrows). Place it on the blender and holding the blade assembly with one hand and give the jar one or two more little twists to fully tighten and it should be recognized. So far this has worked 100% of the time.

I just received my v1200 with the Black Friday discount. LESSON LEARNED: I should have watched this video BEFORE I made my first smoothie. The demonstration was very helpful. Although my arrows do not line up exactly, the auto-detect activates once the arrows are "in the range". I look forward to making another smoothie in the 20 oz cup.

Thank you so much for showing this. My Vitamix has been packed up for a year due to a move. Man did I miss it. Then Hubby found the No-Oil Avocado Dressing from Vitamix and I had not used the 8oz. AND YEP it you do it tooo tight it is awful to undo. BUT, I got the dressing made without and explosion. Thanks for tutorial. You guys are great

Seriously, thank you! I thought they didn’t work, one day I literally tried 30 - 40 times then gave up. Much better now since watching your video. Have used a marker to show the arrow on the containers at they are so difficult to locate.

Thanks! For the video I had this issue with my Ascent 3500 not detecting the 20 and 8 oz containers I just bought. Nothing about that in the instructions. I called Vitamix and support was telling me to look for the arrow on the “blade” instead of the “blade base”, so I wasn’t finding it. I finally got my blender to recognize the container base when I removed the gasket; that confirmed the self-detection was working. After ending the call to Vitamix support I found your video and that helped me figure it out. While I really like my Vitamix 3500 and other accessories (metal container, food processor), I thought their implementation of this product didn’t meet their usually high standards. At a minimum, the arrows placement should be addressed in the manual. If it wasn’t for wanting the 8 oz container for making small nut butter batches for use in smoothies, I’d probably just live with my 48-oz metal container as I find that equally easily, if not more so, for making single 20-oz smoothies.

Great tip, thanks! I think I will still hold off on getting them, I'm afraid. It seems like the engineering could be much better. My refurbished VM worked fine, to intermittently, to not working at all with the 20 oz. container. Found the arrows (which is like Where is Waldo) and tweaked the right amount of tightening and success! Thank you for saving me the phone call to customer service.

I never came across a problem with my A3500 detecting the smaller containers. All I did, was go by feel, to determine where the threads meet. Then I would screw the blades onto the loaded container, and go from there. This is the first time I even heard of the arrows being there. Amazing! Thanks for showing us this.

How did you get the lid off when it was too tight? I’m struggling to open it ugh!!

First you need to align the arrows and then tighten it. The trick is you have to get the arrow away from the grey metal underneath the cup or bowl. Put on the machine and tighten it a bit more until the non detect sign disappear and then untighten while it's on the machine until the sign appaears again.. It works for me all the time.

Very happy to find your site, which Google got me to while sorting out the "no-detect problem" with my Ascent 3300. But lining up the arrows doesn't work for me at all. What DOES work is to attach the 20 or 8 oz. container to the blade base snug but not super tight, put the container and blade base on the machine (which will show the little "no container detected" symbol), and THEN while holding the base with one hand, tightening the container a bit more until the symbol disappears. It'll feel like over tightening it for the first few times, but it works for me 100% of the time. And kudos, btw, for your work: funny, helpful, and professionally informal.

Vitamix should pay you for this! It is beyond comprehension that such a top notch expensive product would have such a major design flaw. How hard would it be for them to include clearly marked arrows and some instructions to align them??? Anyway, thank you for saving my milkshake!

First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this!! Luckily my father-in-law lifts weights and was around to help, because I could not for the life of me tighten it enough to get the arrows aligned! 😂😭 I don’t know how I will ever use it without someone’s help because when it was finally aligned, it was then too tight for me to unscrew on my own. None of the booklets that came in our shipment had any information about the arrows and the fact that they need to be aligned in order for it to work...so ridiculous! I’m just now seeing that this video is 4 years old at the point, which makes this issue even more frustrating because we JUST bought it (A2300) in September (2021)!.... I am going to be contacting Vitamix to ask why they continue making a product that cannot be used. We would have purchased a different model if we had known that these add-on containers would wind up serving as nothing more than fancy to-go cups (or so it would seem!)...😕

@@4g4usa The weird thing is, ours works now!! I didn’t use the blade/container attachments for months after we got it…basically because I gave up on trying. And I never did contact Vitamix because we just had a lot going on and I forgot (was finishing my college degree and we moved). I can’t say for sure how many months went by after we bought it (maybe 3 or 4?), but my husband went to use the attachments one day and they magically worked even without aligning the arrows! And they’ve worked ever since! I have no idea…🫠 However, a different issue has come up with them now that we’ve been using them for over a year…the rubber ring sealant on the blade attachment now juts out in a random area when you tighten the container onto it “too much” (a point at which it’s not even close to the arrows aligning btw…), which causes the contents to leak….So I loosen it a touch until the rubber piece goes back into place, and it doesn’t leak once I do that, but it does still make a mess of things when I take the blade off the container, because the contents ends up all over the rubber piece + the threads of the container and blade attachment. (Btw we always hand wash everything- never put anything in the dishwasher -so I’m not sure what has caused this evident deterioration of the rubber seal…) I really should still contact Vitamix about this though because it’s still unacceptable given the price + the small amount of time we’ve had it. 😒

Really helpful video ! TY. After I got my order, neither the 8oz nor the 20oz would get recognized by the a2500. I tried everything Shalva said but no go. I couldn't get the jar to line up to where it was supposed to be after tightening it, which I thought was in either of those two silver areas. The next day I decided to give it one more try but first I called Vitamix and they said you do NOT have to line up the arrows when starting to tighten the jar to the base, but the arrow has to be where there is clear glass and not in the silver parts when you finish tightening. So I tired it but I couldn't get it to the clear area. The Vitamix lady said try to tighten it just a little more and I did, but I never saw anyone in all the videos I watched have to tighten it as hard as I had to. I finally got the arrow to the clear area and the a2500 recognized it ! Ta da ! I then did the same thing with the 20 oz and was also recognized by the Vitamix. Trying to get the two containers unscrewed was ridiculously hard but the lady said over time it will get easier. Phew !

Thank you. Very helpful. I called Vitamix had bad experience. Customer service was on speaker phone with lots of echo. I asked her to talk on phone and she said either I can help you on speaker phone or call again to talk to another person. She was very rude.

For some reason, it still doesn't work for me. I did exactly what you said and the base couldn't detect the containers. I had to play around for an hour until it worked and the arrows were not in line... so frustrating.

@@jamesl197999 This is how you get it to work. You connect the units then place it on the base and turn it until the device shows the time and you're all set. It works each time for me because I couldn't obtain the tightness it requires.

another trick is to make sure the washer on the base is pushed all the way down, in order get the rotations required to align the arrows AND get it to seal

UPDATE: If this method (lining up the arrows) does not work, try this: Tighten the blade base onto the cup or bowl as much as you can. Then, place it back on the motor base. That should get your machine to recognize the blade base. If the problem continues, contact Vitamix Customer Service 1-800-848-2649 for support. (Background: The new cups and bowls no longer have the arrows and have a new gasket as of late 2018. So tightening the blade base (as much as you can) on the container and putting it back on the machine should work. If it is not reading at that point, you can try to put both hands on the cup/bowl and turn it clockwise, kind of using the machine as leverage until it's recognized. During all this, make sure your has not gone into sleep/power save mode as that will cause it to not recognize as well

One thing I tried was to turn off the motor base then put the cup/bowl and blade base on it, then turn it back on. It worked perfectly from my experience so far.

Thx for the video. I was going nuts with my blender cup even after watching this. Finally took the rubber seal off and it was detected. And then put the seal on tighter this time and then it was detected.

Fidgety, but got there in the end. I realised that as long as the arrow on the blade was away from the grey silver trim on the cups, the machine was able to detect the containers. Thanks for your guidance.

Good info! For any one in a hurry, the key instruction you need is at 5:10 - "Line up the arrows to start, line up the arrows to end" - The End.

Today I was struggling for almost 2 hours with person from vitmx on the phone tried to help me. but no good luck. I got super frustrated with this Crap. Tomorrow I m going to talk to vitmx. If I can't get the 8 oz Container works I'm just return the whole thing. Very Very unhappy
