Latter-day Saint theology teaches that Christ’s suffering in Gethsemane as noted by Luke was a significant part of His atoning sacrifice during which Christ suffered, in a very intimate and personal way, the physical and psychological pains of each and every person who ever lived. Additionally, there’s a popular perception within the church that Gethsemane represents Christ’s victory over (and our redemption from) sin, whereas the cross and tomb represent His victory over (and our resurrection from) physical death. That latter perception isn’t 100% accurate, as per LDS theology; but it seems to be the milieu in which this song was written. For people who have grown up in the LDS Church, the heavy focus on the symbol of cross that manifests itself in many strands of traditional Christianity seems like an incomplete representation of the scope and depth of Christ’s redeeming sacrifice.

This song is only about the Gethsemane part of the Atonement that Christ performed for us. In the garden, somehow he was given all the sicknesses, pains, sorrows, sins, all the bad things we encounter. It was so great that mere mortals could not withstand it and live. That is why he bled from every pore. He then went through false courts to judge Him who had no faults. He was up all night. He then was scourged. Some die from the scourging alone. He then hung on the cross. Some of these pains returned. He was left to himself to do this alone. He died so we could live. The cross is part of this Atonement. Death is the separation of the spirit from the body. His body was then taken to the tomb. The third day is what is called the resurrection. Resurrection means that the spirit and body reunite and will never separate again. This made it possible for all of us to be resurrected! These parts are all what constitutes the Atonement which Jesus performed for us. We cannot save ourselves. He made it possible to save us and help us in our everyday lives. This Atonement also gives us grace, which means He can give us strength beyond our own to overcome challenges and be happier here and our afterlife. This gift to us!!

To those of you who are picking apart this beautiful song simply because it doesn't measure up to your idea of all that should be included in it, let me just say: you all are missing the point. It's a song, a beautiful one, and beautifully done! There's a sweet LDS children song that we teach to our precious little primary children. It's called "Give Said the Little Stream." It simply teaches one aspect of Jesus Christ's teachings: the importance of giving of ourselves to (or serving) others. In case you are not LDS, here are the words to this wonderful little song: Give said the little stream, Give oh give, give oh give! Give said the little stream As it hurried down the hill. I'm small I know But wherever I go The grass grows greener still! Singing singing all the day Give away, oh give away, Singing singing all the day Give oh give away! Like the above children's song, "Gethsemane" is meant to teach us only one aspect of our dear Savior's teachings. Perhaps your disparaging remarks are meant only to create negativity toward our beliefs. If that's the case, I'd tell you, Take your negativity elsewhere. You bring a spirit of contention, and there is no room for contention in our religion.

The term “Mormon” was a nickname coined in the late 1800s because of the Book of Mormon. The name that Jesus instructed His Church to be called is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. That name is a beautiful reminder and sign to the world that Christ himself leads this church and that we as followers of Him worship him. We honor and pay great respect to the suffering that he bore in Gethsemane and on the cross for all of our sins and pains of mortality. I’m sorry if someone may have misinformed you about our beliefs. God loves you and he let his Son suffer for you so as you come to believe in Him, you kind find true peace, joy, and eventual eternal life with your Creator❤

You do not know what you think you know. We worship the Father in the name of his Only Begotten Son as commanded. We do testify that Joseph Smith was the Lord's prophet and there is a living prophet today. Remember Amos' statement that "Surely the Lord will do nothing except He reveal his secrets unto his servants the prophet's". God is the same yesterday today and forever. It should not be a surprise that he works through and guides his children through prophet's. Prophet's are here to guide us to the Lord Jesus Christ. They are indeed his special called witnesses.
