I'm sorry I missed this show...I worked with both of them, terrific firemen and just great guys all around and completely dedicated to our job and the Brotherhood...or as we say in Boston FD-speak....These 2 guys are both good Jakes.

This is for FF Ed Kelly 1971 I had gotten out of the Marine Corps and was going to UMASS Boston Arlington and Columbus Ave. Dist 4 HQ was same block Eng 26, Ladder 17, Eng 7 and Car 4. I had a friend, who was the Lt on Eng 26, Frank Arnao. There was a FF Kelly that drove the wagon as I recall on Eng 7. (Eng 7 was a double engine company--hose wagon and a pump.) The hose wagon was like a 1954 Pierce or American La France--it was open to the air. Strange thing--I changed apartments in 1973 and moved to Westglow St in Dot and lo and behold--FF Kelly was my neighbor. I remember he had eight kids. Small world. I tried for three years to get on Boston Fire. I got a 99 on the exam--and they wouldn't hire me--civil service (Mabel Campbell) claimed I wasn't a Boston resident because I was a college student. I was twenty nine years old--six years in the Marine Corps and a year in Vietnam--TS. So I went on the Mass State Police. Nick Keenan was a Pvt on ladder 17. Marty Pierce was on the stick as well. Bob Rosemond drove Eng 7's pump. He knew the location of every hydrant in the South End. I got to ride whenever I wanted on Eng 26 until I went on the state police. I took a million photos--and had photos of the Vendome coming down and ladder 17 being crushed. I gave the photos to a FF in the Pru station-- 15 and 33. He was doing a history of the dept or whatever. That was over 20 years ago. Time flies. Deputy Frank Kodzis (ret) is a flying buddy. Best wishes to all the Boston Jakes. One other thing--I got to meet Capt Davey Watson who I believe was the longest serving fire fighter in the history of BFD--he was the Capt of the ladder on Oliver St--Capt Watson was eighty two years old. He was 5'7" if he was an inch and I personally saw him climb the stick three stories at age 82!. Deputy George Thompson was in command at that fire downtown--Stuart St.

I was waiting for him to tell the story about when he gave the woman shit for calling 911 for a twisted ankle on Fire house USA. “ You know you took the busiest engine company out of service for a hurt ankle?!...things I wish I could say on the job every shift

Great episode! I grew up in Mass and lived in Boston for while. It was a dream of mine to become a Boston firefighter but things out of my control took me to Georgia where I got to live out my dream of being a firefighter. I also just learned that Mike Ricci is a distant relative of mine. R.I.P brother.

We don't have bangor ladders anymore thankfully, but we throw our 35's with two men as well and are trained to raise 24's and 28's by ourselves. Our Truck has the heavy ass "trussed" style ladders too, so it is certainly a work out.

Have these guys back sometime. Maybe for the bull pen.

Grand Rapids Township in MI fired the IAFF and voted the Teamsters in to represent them. They tried & tried for years to get them to stick up for them. Because they were a combination department full & part time guys the union wouldn’t do crap for them
