As an engineer I wouldn't do it unless a you want to work in university or specialise in that area in industry. But industry will limit you to that area frequently.

Such a great video. Lots of good information. I am actually in the process of applying to several Ph.D programs in Computer Science, with an emphasis on Applied Computation and Mathematics. Because I actually want to do research (specifically quantum computing and its real-world applications in cryptography, finance, and computing), a Ph.D is almost a necessity. The difficult part for me is the idea of giving up a significant salary to pursue my dream and ambition. Keep up the great work.

I have a PhD. in Civil Engineering (Structural), and to be honest I would not recommend it, unless you want to teach or do research like I do. Getting a PhD is not only exhausting, but it also does not really help you find engineering job. If you want to be an engineer, I can only recommend pursuing the M.S. at the highest. With a M.S., you can do quite well with engineering jobs.

@jetsunthinley936 Thank you for sharing your perspective! We appreciate your insights as someone with a PhD in the field. Your point about a PhD being more suited for those interested in academia or research is valid. In our video, we emphasize the importance of aligning your career goals with the type of degree you pursue. We also discuss how a Master's can open doors to specialized roles and higher salaries. However, we want to highlight that a PhD can still be valuable in industry for certain positions, especially those involving advanced research and development. It ultimately depends on the individual's career aspirations and the specific field they're in. We encourage viewers to weigh the pros and cons based on their personal circumstances and career goals before making a decision. Thank you again for your comment!

Did you take a decision? I am also facing a similar situation, to choose between a PhD and a graduate job. I have great interest in both and confused what to do.

a PhD is almost equivalent to having a felony in my opinion. It does not matter what you study because you will alway look overqualified in the job market. For Professorships, good luck making 50k per year for many years of post doc with no guarantee. If you want to always be placed on a pedestal and have zero room for looking dumb at all, then get a PhD. lol

I really want to go into the CV or perception field of EE/CS domains and I’m wondering if I need a PhD to get a really interesting job in this area.

It would likely depend on the specific company you would want to work at. I would recommend looking at people's LinkedIn profiles within this domain and see what kind of credentials they have.

Would this be a viable path for students who don’t have previous degrees in engineering (going into transportation engineering)

In order to get a PHD in engineering you would probably need some kind of foundational degree. The best would be to reach out to PHD programs in engineering and ask them what the pre-requisites are.
