Toast's descent into discussing the issues facing [predominantly white] young men was interesting to watch! I think what he's saying isn't totally wrong in terms of perception, but in reality it's a little off. White men were never /not/ the focus, and I think there are decent white guys, even in this sphere to look at that! - The McElroys - Ludwig Ahgren - Arin and Dan from the Game Grumps - Brennen Lee Mulligan - Matt Mercer - Julien Solomita - Northernlion - Anthony Padilla - CDawgVA - Rhett and Link - Coffeezilla Like these are all dude's who haven't proven themselves to be complete jerks. Most (if not all) do what they can to help their communities, and others. If they mess up, they learn and do better in the future. Then on top of that, Toast mentioned having good male role models. He might not agree, but I'm sure some young men look up to him, along with Scarra and Peter. On top of the white men I've already mentioned, there are also guys like Jarvis Johnson, Ify Nwadiwe, and Eugene Lee Yang to be entertained by. I've given a lot of examples, but these are all just off the top of my head! If you're a young man reading this, I hope you've found the role models you need. And in a totally healthy way. Also: Haikyuu, I never noticed how "normal" most of the hair colours were before. Sure, Hinata and there are some characters with silver hair. But it is a lot of natural colours overall.

Nah, it's not interesting at all. He's ignoring the fact that the same systems we're tirelessly trying to dismantle and reform are the same efforts that have actually had a material impact in helping all categories of men - see the history of prison reform, the activism of feminist and anti-war movements during the Vietnam War, police demilitarization, legalizing same-sex marriage, promoting gender-affirming therapies, improving access to affordable healthcare, etc. Meanwhile, the men he's talking about tend to believe progress starts and ends with lifting weights and learning how to get sex; they don't need any more help. Instead, those people need to take a hard look in the mirror rather than expect society to coddle their own insecurities and psychological bad habits. The whole 'the left is failing men' rhetoric is just validating a victim complex that's built on blaming marginalized people for their own shortcomings. Leftist content aimed at addressing systemic issues that harm men exists abundantly, from Hasanabi to Gabor Mate. Toast is just yapping lmao.

Even in Philippines people bullied anime watchers back then. I was and always will be a weeb. I just didn't show it publicly cause I knew I would be bullied. Although I didn't deny it when I was asked. Funny enough the bullies are now anime lovers. 😅 I can't remember my first anime. Probably dragonball, slam dunk, yu yu hakusho or flame of recca (forgot the japanese name). There's also shaman king, law of ueki, ippo makunochi and of course hunter x hunter (the first version). I just remember coming home from school to watch them on TV. No cable or satellite it's local and was dubbed in Tagalog/Filipino. 😅 Man, oh my goddess is a blast from the past. This was a great episode! Thanks to everyone and Toast! 💛 Come back to the philippines, jollibee is waiting. 😂

I side with Scarra and liking some of the Isekai/power fantasy series but more so because I just like the weak to strong aspect. It kind of feels like watching an RPG rather than playing it. The mythology and regional differences in how characters approach things are also a really cool part. Like a manga MC is very different than a manhwa and xianxia/wuxia are also very different. As a whole it can be pretty cringe and trope filled though. A lot of the time you just gotta ride on through those painful portions. 😅

Listening to these guys makes me a bit sad hearing their childhood experience, and a bit happy for having grown up here in Orange County, Ca on the border or a rich and poor area, with all that diversity in my school. I was a white boy with a Korean best friend and perhaps it was my privilege but there was no one that could tell me I shouldn't be enjoying anime, manga, video games, or computer programming. I use every ounce of what small privilege I have to encourage younger generations to explore those arts and sciences.

Toast also heavily projecting on isekai. Majority of anime are power fantasies where the unreasonably talented main character that pretends to be an underdog is winning 99% of the time against stronger and stronger opponents. Scapegoating on isekai won't change that. Isekai is about touring, exploring, and living in the moment in a fantasy world rather than it being a background setting where a viewer has to accept that something like super powers are normal. He has some weird constructs to automatically jump to incel. But maybe I'm wrong because I've only seen SAO, not NTR. Maybe he didn't like that Kirito was able to save Asuna from that one scene. It all makes sense now.

World trigger is a good battle Shonen. In terms of power system and realistic power limits that the main protagonist is just a regular guy who uses what he has to be able to win fights and develops through regular hardwork. Not in the realm of power fantasy of the MC but in the shoes of the average viewer.

When I was 14 and I saw some people at my age do the naruto run, to me it was cringe. When I was 19, my friends and I were drunk walking home at 3 am from a party, someone started to do the naruto run, we all joined them and it is still one of the best memories I had in that time. Now with 30 I saw my 14 year old nephew do the naruto run and it just warmed my heart :D btw. before the naruto run there was also the little goku run (from the original dragon ball) that we did at the age of 8 :D

manhwa suggestion - "The long way of the warrior" It's currently on hiatus after season 1 (188 chapters) MC is a gladiator in roman colosseum, the villain is an emperor. Both hero and villain are pretty cool, most of the supporting characters are well written. The MC has a clear goal and looking for ways to achieve it. Villain, in his own way, has a clear goal too. So if you didn`t read it already I`d recommend to check it.

coming from someone who has anime as dp but i draw it myself. isekai anime is enjoyable for me because its easy to digest. im tired of emotional point in "grown up" anime/manga. i dont want to just watch k drama to show im "grown up" "adult". i just enjoy things that is fun to read and i dont have to see heroine getting ntr or dead characters just to prove points. mushoku is overrated tbh it was mid

Mushoku's main draw is power fantasy. The other stuff comes along to make it a little less obvious. Even Frieren is a power fantasy, but they hit enough notes to masquerade this. Power fantasy isn't inherently the worst thing ever, but it exists in most shounen battles.

@@damiester1I'm not overly fond of power fantasy shows or overpowered characters in general, but both Mushoku Tensei and Frieren are among my favorites. There's power fantasy elements in both, but it's far from the main draw (unless you're someone that mainly searches for that element in shows)

@@saintyoo The MC was basically given powers way beyond most characters in the show for a 1 minute training montage. The entire story's about how he exploits those powers for selfish gains and every once in a while becomes a slightly less creepy person. Even his main romantic interests fell for him after violent incidents including an attempted assault by the MC. Mushoku is the definition of power fantasy lol.
