The jacket is so striking. I wonder if the styling of the outfit in the portrait was meant to be a bit provocative. Something about the blend of masculine and feminine styles reminded me of those old pinup pictures of Marlene Dietrich in a top hat and tuxedo.

I appreciated the attempt at a piaffe!! 😂 You don't seem to be 100% comfortable with a double bridle? I'm guessing you only do it for costumes if you're a jumper. Actually I don't know the history of double bridles etc, I'll have to do some reading. I love all your historical recreations and inspired costumes. I love seeing them being used for what they were originally made. I have a history degree, but I'm not a particularly good sewer. Your videos give me a glimpse into the past.

Don’t like them. 95% of riding I do is Single rein, in one hand- and I don’t do if for costumes, i have been riding a lot sidesaddle, modern style/ jumping, crossing the country. Not a dressage or schooling person, not interested in showing or competitions either.

Nothing scandalous hidden away in those pockets this time, I see. Lol. So where is Lucus' riding habit? Surely a lady of such prestigiousness such as your self would have a dashing rouge to accompany her on her rides.

Maybe invest in wearing a microphone. All your research and information is so great and I love to learn about the history but just can't hear it. Besides that awesome video as always. Much love!

Tip for your wonky shoulder: when putting on a jacket, always start with the wonky shoulder/arm first, then the good one. I have the same problem and had to change my usual way of dressing. Which Graffin Sophie is it, btw?

Is your frozen shoulder getting better? I have difficulty with certain clothing too!! I'm grateful that I can pull on a shirt and a pair of breeches for my rides. I'd be exhausted after getting all of the clothing on, too tired to ride.

In some of the books I've read it's talked about going riding in the park in town more to be "Seen" and to socialize. Not sure if that is a historical thing or not. Would this type of outfit been appropriate for something like that since no real riding was being done?

Women back then did both, with it varying by location. In the French court, ladies rode astride, and wore breeches under their riding habits to prevent chafing.

Why did people without access to a washing machine, or dry cleaners wear so many specialty clothes that were light colored? How did they keep their clothes clean?
@starthelotus3453
@starthelotus3453 Ай бұрын
The chemise was made for this purpose, as well as for hygiene. It caught all of your bodily oils and sweat, keeping the outer garments clean, and would be washed every day. Outer garments were akin more to our modern coats and jackets, and would only be cleaned when absolutely necessary as the fabrics used often prevented proper washing.

We've got dry shampoo now, which basically plays the same role. It was meant to absorb oils in the hair, which isn't an issue now that we wash our hair regularly unlike them back then.
