Hey guys, I think sketching and drawing is such an important skill to learn, so I decided to share some beginner techniques with you.
This tip will help you get started on your way to becoming great at sketching and drawing. Try it out!
Note: I want to thank Feng Zhu for all the amazing things he's taught artists like myself over the years, and this video is partially inspired by his video. He is a big inspiration of mine, and it's why you might see recurring themes in my own videos. :)

My worst obstacle is my inner critic. I see other artists work and immediately lose confidence in mine. I would draw a drawing and instantly hate it because it's not what I wanted it to be. I am having so much difficulty getting through this.

I can definitely relate, and that has definitely been my biggest roadblock as an artist. To me, Peter Han has been a huge inspiration. I’m paraphrasing, but basically he often tells his students to remember that “this isn’t your last drawing” (unless you make it your last) so it doesn’t matter how it turns out. And it’s true. In the beginning stages, it’s really just about doing it.

I vividly imagine my future self flipping through this old sketchbook and laughing a bit at my old sketches, proudly comparing it to my newer drawings and feeling good about the progress I made, which I wouldn't have if I gave up because these old ones looked bad. They say visualization is important.

Every sketchbook I buy, I write "10000 Bad Paintings" on the cover, to remind me of what my first art teacher at university said to me-- "Everyone has 10,000 bad paintings in them. The sooner you start, the sooner they'll be out of your system." I know that's not an original line, but its the right attitude IMHO-- always draw, every day if you can. It's helped me a lot.

*_In order to be a good artist/sketcher, first you have to be a bad one._* Then you practice, and that makes you a good one. Step by step you develop the muscle memories and the inspiration and passion and most of all, the skill; and that's where your creativity comes from! Creativity is the expression of mastery of a skill! It is not innate!

Stick with it man, and if possible, draw every day. You have to learn to see your "bad results" , mistakes and "failures" as "just a normal part of the road to getting good". Don't get frustrated, angry or depressed, try to just stay positive and simply carry on. Once I learned to see things this way, I swear mate I feel like I had an epiphany, and after 4 months my improvements were bigger than ever! Also remember that ALL the greatest artists started like us, just beginners with no experience but they didn't let the failures defeat them! You can get where you want to be, just hit that sketchbook every day!

I dont know about western countries but here in major part of Asia, there is this trend/practice of doing quick sketch where you sketch anything (mostly human figure) from real life within a minute a two. And we do this in a massive number like, 50 to 200 per day so in universities, students usually do around 6000 to 10000 quick sketches per semester so what this does is basically co-ordinates your hand to eye connection, makes you a better observer and generally after so many sketches you kind of develop a muscle memory for basic sketches.

I got depression and I really struggle with art now ... Every time I started to paint, it hit me so much. My head started to hurt and I got blackouts. I also lost fun, patience and self-confidence. Art used to be my passion ... now it's my dark emotional release, which is not bad at all. My body just doesnt work with me and after every painting I made, I felt horrible, so I stopped. Now that I've seen this video, I feel very comfortable and confident. Even if I cannot paint big artworks anymore, I will try not to think about it so much and rather start all over again to build myself up slowly. I will be patient with my body. I will try to love and live with all the power of my heart. From now on I will focus with my thoughts, words and actions to a goal and tackle things with enthusiasm. I'm very grateful for it, you all help me a lot ! 😇♥️♾♥️

Art is my anti-depressant. Whether just coloring someone else's llneart in a fun, comic-book kind of way, or following this guy's tutorials and painting epic vistas. Just following my art heart and doing something to make me or someone else smile... makes my day. if not week. Keep going, rebuild. You'll get there. It can be a struggle. (Not joking about the anti-depressant thing. My depressive episodes used to be sooo bad until I got back into art. Now, so much better. And they lessen with each improvement in my abilities. Every lesson learned. And don't beat yourself up about any mistakes. Try to embrace them, use them, learn from them.)

It's really important to separate practice and make a good one drawing / painting. :) It's hard, I know I'm learning drawing myself this year more seriously, but it's really important and it's not the same way to do the things. Now than I accept making a loooot of mistakes and a few good ones, not with the same feelings, I feel really better and I want to continue. When I really can't I make something really simple and just take markers you know. Try to more listen you and what you need, when you need it. Good painting! :)

Thanks guys for your kind words and your concerns. I realize what Feng Zhu is saying in his video is very similar. If you feel this is too similar and unfair to FZD, and would like me to take it down, I will. I really didn't want to offend anyone. However, I'd love to add something new to it by stressing working with more traditional mediums rather than just going digital, give an exercise that I think can really help you, and perhaps give a little different angle from my own experience and advice showing how I sketch some of these subjects. Best of wishes and luck to your artistic journeys

I've seen both videos, and, with respect to the master Feng Zhu, I don't think he is the first artist ever to suggest that beginners practice daily and draw simple subjects from life like rocks and trees. In fact, I have a 3D Total Sketch Workshop Landscape book in which the first 2 subjects are...rocks and trees. Those things are just the simplest parts of a more complex whole. Also, Feng Zhu's video went into considerably more detail, included bullet points, reference, and more complex subjects like skulls and animals. Anyway, I think you're fine. Nice video.

What I've really been having trouble with is the fact that I'm blinded by my goals in drawing; There's this picture in my head that must be expressed on paper- yet that picture is far beyond my current capabilities. In having the fear that I could be practicing the wrong skills by drawing random objects, I end up drawing nothing at all and stagnating. All the while, I see art all around me that looks amazing. Instead of being inspired, I am discouraged. Thus is the beginner's self perpetuating cycle that ceases all development. How do you escape?

Excellent video! A lot of beginner artists get hung up on drawing or painting complex subjects and get frustrated when the outcome isn't what they expect it to be. Exercises like these are amazing ways of improving observational skills and, as you mentioned, building up confidence, which are both essential. It's SO important to keep making time for drawing throughout our artistic journeys, no matter what our medium of preference is. Thanks for this!

I'm back to say thank you. I used to sketch a lot of just random things when I was in school, despite having absolute no knowledge of drawing techniques, I was okay at it and I enjoyed doing that. Recently I've officially started to learn drawing, and somehow the thought of just sketching things again never crossed my mind. Immediately after watching this I went ahead and sketched some bamboo trees, actually got pretty good results. I'll absolutely keep doing this everyday from now and that's all thanks to your advice.

As long as u don’t trace it, and claim it as your own, then it still counts as drawing. If you copy the same picture over and over, u even end up training your muscles to make it, and u can eventually do it without a reference.

This video is full of great advice, and takes nothing away from Feng Zhu's somewhat similar video. Quite in fact what you've done is shine a light on Zeng, a KZfaqr I might not have come across otherwise. He is now wealthier by at least one subscriber, and all thanks to you! Forget the haters, this is your style and your advice - regardless of how many countless others have offered ideas in a similar vein. Keep pumping out videos, they're not redundant at all and are certainly helping people like myself! Thanks for all that you do, Walid.

I’m a recent subscriber so I haven’t seen very many of your videos, so I’ve been kinda binge watching them and stumbled on this little gem. What I love so much about this video is how you point out that other artists shouldn’t compare their art, to you and yours as they are on a different skill level than you. I rarely see other artists mention this important piece of advice in videos which is sad. So it makes me really happy to see someone actually point this out. Not everyone is on the same skill level of drawing. ❤️

In art you need to develop a "software" inside your mind with knowledge about perspective ,lights and shadows. A second "software" is required to put what's in your mind onto the work surface (hand muscles training). Both need practice. Also there are things in art you can't explain ,they must be felt by the one learning.
