Now with tournaments restarting, new set release, and a new company running the game... perhaps soon will be a good time to put out another Keyforge video. The kickstarter by Ghost Galaxy raised over 1M dollars... so there is definitely interest. As a tourney player/previous worlds qualifier- I am super happy with the news.

Great to see some more coverage for this title. This is a special game, and got a big disruption from COVID. Hope it can continue to grow in the months ahead! Really nice to see a summary of the various sets here too. A great way to catch up new players, or players who have been away from it for a bit, to get caught up.

Apparently the Keyracken is pretty tough to beat, but easiest when playing solo. Sounds like a much different challenge than just beating another deck, and there should be a decent amount of replay value by trying different decks. Most people just seem grateful for any extra KeyForge content right now. Let me know what you think if you end up trying it out! I'll probably give it a go in the next week or two, and if so I might put together a video as well.

As a Magic player since 1997, Keyforge is the greatest "collectable" card game that I actually really enjoy aside from Magic. Pokémon and Yugioh were decent in the time I played them, but it always came back to Magic, and now, with my buddy with whom Magic has fallen out of favor, Keyforge. We've been playing since Age of Ascension, and we love the game.
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 3 жыл бұрын
That's awesome! 1997 is quite a ways back... looks like that was around Tempest. Dylann and I started playing Magic in 1999 when Urza's Destiny was the newest set but we also fell out of favour with it after a few years. KeyForge is a really good alternative, even though it captures a lot of what I liked about Magic it also does so many new, interesting things with each set. Thanks for stopping by!

I agree. I've been playing Magic for 26 years. I tried Pokemon, I tried YGO, but Magic is where it was at. I heard about Keyforge before COTA was released, had to drive to the next county to get a COTA starter set. Been digging it ever since.

The reason it’s not more popular is frankly most likely because of the premade decks. It’s what’s making me more than skeptical about this game and hesitant to try it. I have to gamble $10 for a premade deck that more than likely is just going to either be not any good or not match my play style.

Nice overview. My son and I have been playing since the first set. It has been our go to game (along with Marvel Champioins) during the pandemic. We have a lot of decks and our favorite way to play is to pick two decks at random. We play a game, swap decks, and play the second game. If you win both games, you are clearly the best at piloting your decks that day. I found that the use of chains can be a good way to get someone new into the game. When my son was younger, I would start the game with 9 chains. This kept my son from getting blown out of games and getting frustrated. As he got better, I reduced the number of chains that I would start with. Now, when my son destroys me, he jokes that he needs to play with chains. I would enjoy some "Top 5" or "Top 10" lists for the new set. For example, "Top 5 New Upgrades", "Top 5 New Creatures", or "Top 5 New Artifacts".
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 3 жыл бұрын
That's awesome, Howard! I always like to hear when people are playing KeyForge (or any game, really) with their kids. I love the play style with the two random decks and the reversal/swap format, really good way to get different perspectives on decks, learn the strengths and weaknesses of each, etc. And yeah I haven't had to implement Chains yet since I've only played with a couple other people who were of similar experience level, but it's definitely a good mechanism for balancing and introducing new/younger players. Thank you so much for the feedback and suggestions - as I spend more time playing and checking out the rest of the cards online I'll try to put together some videos like that, looking at more specific cards.

Great overview video! Especially love how you went through all the houses and sets, it's a great recap for anyone jumping back into the game. As for the future announcements you ask about in the end, recently one of the designers (Aaron) mentioned in a podcast that they already started working on set 8, so KeyForge is definitely sticking around for a while. And here's some more good news for you: we've also heard that Mars is coming back, either in set 6 or 7 ;)

This was an excellent overview, thanks. It has been quite some time since I last played KeyForge (Call of the Archons + Age of Ascension). Now that I will finally try Mass Mutation, I needed to refresh the whole concept of the game. We have also not been lucky with the rarest cards. I remember the hype when Call of Archon was released, the online board game stores were practically emptied in hours here in Finland. Now, the situation has changed, leaving only the most committed KeyForgers in the arena.

I often go weeks/months at a time without playing, but every time I come back to KeyForge I'm reminded of how fun it is. We have a similar situation here in Canada from what I can tell - a lot of people have stopped playing entirely, or will only start playing again if/when they actually release a new set and the online adaptation they've spoken about. Hopefully we get some news on that soon! This game is so good and I'd love to see it succeed.

Love Keyforge so much. I used to try getting into TCGs for a long while. I was into yugioh forever and got into magic for a little bit, but with those games, the meta kills me. I am more into fun than optimization and don't have the money to spend on the right cards, so my friends would destroy me and plus power creep made it difficult to maintain. But with Keyforge, the power creep seems a good bit under control and there is no real min-maxing. Even if my low power deck is destroyed by a high power deck, I can feel good that I don't have to keep up on optimal strategy optimizing the fun out of the game. Either the deck's synergy works or it doesn't and I can have a good laugh. Makes it feel less like the game is "solved".
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. Dylann and I used to play Magic quite a bit when we were teenagers, just for fun, and we also played a bunch of Hearthstone online for a while, but we both got tired of all the meta stuff, net-decking, etc., so when KeyForge was announced it felt like a breath of fresh air. And to that last point you made - that's actually my favourite part of the game! Taking a deck that I know is either weaker or tougher to figure out, and trying to take down a giant with it. Even if I lose like 10 times in a row with a "bad" deck, it's so rewarding to eventually figure it out and beat other decks. And, worst case scenario, you got a bunch of fun games out of a single deck for like $10, and you can still use that deck for Reversal tournaments, or give it to a friend, or whatever. Such a good game, and I hope it gets over the hump sooner rather than later. I think a lot of people are on the fence as to whether or not to jump in now, or get more invested after buying just a couple decks, so I'm hoping FFG can fix that algorithm soon and release the new set, and hopefully more people will invest in the game and help it grow. Thanks for watching!

Yeah at that price, even if you only like 2 or 3 of those 12 decks, that's still a totally reasonable price, and you have tons of chances to land better decks. $23 US is a steal for 12 decks from any set.

I'm pretty new to Keyforge, so I'm still learning how things work, and I don't understand your commentary on Rakuzel's Chant. Isn't there basically no risk to you when playing it at high tide if you just attack/reap/action with all of your creatures before playing Rakuzel's Chant? They'll already be exhausted when you play it, and it's not like they will be double exhausted or anything; you'll just ready them during the Ready Phase of your turn. Or is that not how the turn phases work?
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 2 жыл бұрын
That sounds right to me. I can't remember what I said about Rakuzel's Chant at this point, but I might've misspoken based on your comment here. There might be specific situations where the timing of using a certain card's ability might affect that, but overall I think you're right, there shouldn't be much (if any) risk to using it if the tide is already high, as long as you use all your creature abilities (or reap) first. Sorry for the late reply!

Might be a stupid question but here goes anyway: say you’re participating in a tournament, do they check your deck to make sure the cards are the same you found in it when you bought it or you could build a stronger deck? I know one of the great things about this game is that you are ready to play as soon as you buy your “algorithm made” deck but I heard, because it is casual, some decks could be stronger then others. Could one persons buy two “dark tidings”, for example, in order to exchange some cards between those and make a more powerful deck?
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dario, not a stupid question at all! Actually a great question and I'm glad you asked. I've only been to one tournament and it was at a store that was running their first tournament when the game was still brand new. They had nothing in place to ensure people were using a fair deck, and one player's deck seemed packed with really good cards, almost too good... there was a bit of suspicion from some players about whether or not their deck was fair. What we suggested they do for future tournaments is that everyone scans and uploads their deck online to the KeyForge database, and then provides the name of the deck, so that if someone plays a card you don't think is in their deck, either you or a Judge can check the deck online to see if they modified the deck or it actually has that card. I don't know how most game stores run their tournaments but that's one good way to avoid deck manipulation. Not sure if it's done differently for Sealed Deck tournaments compared to other formats where you can see your opponent's deck list card. I hope this helps. Don't ever hesitate to ask a question here, no question is ever stupid if you don't know the answer and want to learn. Thanks for watching! 🙂✌

Any single deck (for around $10 or $12, sometimes less for older sets) is all you really need to get started. Sure, the tokens in the starter/deluxe sets are fine, but you can also other things as substitutes, like board game components or coins or whatever. You can start with any set. The first set (Call of the Archons) probably has the simplest mechanics and would be the best starting point, plus the power level of the set is considered to be fairly high. Overall though, a deck from any set will do.

That's great, Penni! I used to play a lot of MTG (not commander) but stopped a while back because I felt like I had to keep spending a lot of money to keep up. KeyForge is such a great game to play casually and it's awesome to see all the variety in the unique decks. You get to see way more cards instead of a game like MTG where you tend to mostly see the best cards in the same decks.

Haven't got into Keyforge yet but I have a teenage son who enjoys competive board games to play with. Appreciate the overview. Is the appeal/hook in buying new random decks and hoping you can solve the puzzle to getting optimal performance out of them (i.e. most decks are balanced)? Or is it that most decks are kind of trash and your chasing this mythical unicorn deck of power that you'll rarely find?
@matijadukic21
@matijadukic21 3 жыл бұрын
It's different things for different people. You can certainly go chasing unicorns (or buy one on ebay), but most decks aren't trash so people primarily enjoy discovering different decks and learning how to get the most out of them. Decks are also much more different than you might think, so each one plays wildly differently and offers unique combos and challenges, especially if they're from different sets.

@@matijadukic21 Appreciate the insight. The discovery aspect really sounds intruiging. Not sure why but the game kinda gives me a hearthstone vibe even if the gameplay isn't similiar. Also, I didn't realize you could play different sets together. I'm guessing it makes the most sense just to pick up the latest set (Dark Tidings) for the 2player starter box rather than grabbing an older set? Cheers
@matijadukic21
@matijadukic21 3 жыл бұрын
@@en4crcdn Yes, the game is designed to be evergreen so you'll always be able to play decks from every set against every other. That is one of the main drivers of endless, and increasing, variety in the game. And they've done a really good job of balancing sets so far. Of course some are on average a bit stronger than others (as discussed in the video), but basically a good deck is a good deck and it won't be "rotated out" in a few months. As for the starter set, each of the last three sets (WC, MM and DT) have all the tokens you'll need so I'd definitely recommend one of them. As mentioned in the video, with each set the game increases in complexity slightly, so some people like to start at the beginning (you can get COTA decks for a few bucks) and progress through the sets. But if this isn't your first card game, DT is definitely not too complex to jump into immediately, especially if you like the new house or mechanics it introduces. If you're in the US though, I'm not sure if it's available as there were some shipping delays and I believe the official release date is only next week (in other parts of the world it was released a few weeks ago).

Great questions, and dukman has already given some good advice below. For me the hook is definitely either getting a new deck and discovering it, or taking a deck I haven't played much yet, or a deck that's VERY tough to win with, and finding a way to beat a good deck. One of the first decks I ever bought was really bad, all kinds of anti-synergy... I think I lost the first 10 or 12 games I played with it. But then I kind of "figured it out" and won 7 or 8 in a row! It has one of the lowest deck scores (there's a ranking system online called SAS which assigns a numeric value to a deck based on the card list) of any of my decks, but it was so rewarding to go through that process of finding a way to make it work. You can trade decks to play reversal style, there are all kinds of formats and you can get a LOT of value out of each deck, even if it's not very good. I think it's an excellent style of game to play with your son, and if he gets really into it, there's a more competitive scene out there for him to play in tournaments and stuff like that, at which point he might want to start buying more decks to "chase the mythical unicorn", as you say, haha. Thanks for watching, Brian! Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any other questions.

The biggest differences in the actual gameplay from Hearthstone, aside from not being able to build the deck you want, is that in Hearthstone you ramp up in mana each turn starting from 1, so a lot of your choices revolve around what you can afford to play. In KeyForge, with having to choose one of 3 active houses, the choices are much more interesting, in my opinion. You're given a deck and FORCED to make it work, even when you don't want certain cards. Plus, since it's a race for aember, the game has much less fighting/attacking. I played Hearthstone for years and had a lot of fun with it, but I think KeyForge is a MUCH better game.

how does errata work for cards like "bait and switch"?
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 3 жыл бұрын
Think of it this way: the rules errata will tell you how the card should've been worded rather than how it is actually worded on the card. So for Bait and Switch, you only repeat the effect once (so steal 2 max). Does that make sense?

Something that's still unclear to me - When the tide starts out neutral, can you just raise the tide initially by gaining 3 chains? Or must there be some effect to raise the tide the first time in the game?
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 3 жыл бұрын
As long as at least 1 of the 2 players is playing with a Dark Tidings deck, either player can raise the tide by gaining 3 chains on their turn, even if it's neutral at the time. And it doesn't exhaust that tide card, so technically you could gain 3 chains to raise the tide, then if you had a card ability that allowed you to raise the tide for your opponent, you could do that and then gain 3 MORE chains (total of 6) to raise the tide again on the same turn. But if the tide is already high, you can't trigger a "raise the tide" effect again until it gets lowered first.

Sort of, although Mavericks just appear in a different house but with all the same card text, meaning sometimes they're made better or worse depending on which house they go into. That's fair. It can be frustrating for sure, especially if you don't have many decks and you feel like you got unlucky with some weak ones, and even more so especially if you're hoping to play the game competitively. I really like the challenge of learning how to make a lesser deck work and how to beat a better deck with it. It's a big reason why I choose to play KeyForge more casually - I don't really care if I win or lose, it's about discovering the decks and finding what makes each one work best. Not trying to discredit what you're saying though, it's totally a valid point, and I'm happy to hear you're still enthusiastic about the game.

I hear you, it's a bit restrictive, but I also think the game works super well with 2 players and I'm not sure I would want to play this type of game with more than 2 players. There would be a lot more down time between turns, and keeping track of everything on the board for 2 or 3 other players instead of just 1 could get overwhelming. Plus, think of the table space!

You could find some rules online. I played with four players once. I don't remember exactly the changes to make it work, but these I do remember: 1. The opponent who destroys a creature gets all the Æmber it holds. 2. Cards that affect your opponent may target any one opponent. 3. Cards that affect both you and your opponent affect all players.

Fair enough. I find the rules themselves to be super interesting with the 3 houses and how you can only play/use/discard from a single house each turn, but some decks feel too easy/obvious to pilot which can sometimes make the gameplay feel less interesting. For example: I have a deck with lots of free amber bonuses so you just want to play whichever house you have the most cards in hand from and race through your deck quickly, so the decision space isn't very interesting. But I have other decks that feel like a tricky puzzle each time. So I really think it depends which deck you play with and against.
