Getting Larger 295/35/21 Tires on my Model Y Performance

After 18,500 miles, my rear tires are getting close to the end. I still had a couple thousand miles to go, but decided to get new rear tires on my 2022 Model Y Performance. The stock rear tires are 275/35/21 and I do not like how they look on the rim. They look like the tires are too small and stretched. I wanted a beefier tire that also can give me a little bit of curb protection, and the 295's seem to be the right fit.

I did 275 35/21 and 295/35/21 on my MYP, took a little range hit, as expected since i have roof racks on as well. But I also noticed Steering got stiffer, due to larger front and rear tires, and handling wasn't as sharp compared to before. The stance definitely looks very aggressive now, which i like, however going larger tires definitely have its pros and cons.

Beefed up the tires (275/35-295/35) on my 23 MYP two weeks ago and noticed the improved ride comfort and protection but Im sad to report that I am also noticing that the range has been reduced by 20-25% when going anywhere uphill or over 69mph… 😢 Definitely going back to oem for the next set.

@@OlavAlexanderMjelde Ive thought about all that before but the uberturbines simply complete the model y, imo. The range loss that I’m experiencing(20-25%) tho, in my car, isn’t worth the small-mediumish improvement in ride comfort. Just wished that I could’ve found some real-world, unbiased review before the swap.

@@vannievannie1663 I did testing on 3P and I could measure increased accelleration with lighter wheels. Maybe 0.1-0.2 seconds. However the car also felt more nimble with less rotational mass, there is something about how heavy wheels make a car feel. On the YP, the wheels are MUCH heavier than on the 3P. So light wheels can save a lot of rotational mass. Range-wise you will only earn range if the aero of the new wheels also is better. If they have worse aero, the range might decrease. But if I was an engineer at Tesla, I would not have chosen the stock YP wheels and staggered setup. The 255 front tires will be the limiting factor for grip right, so you have 275 rear. If they did square setup with 265s, the contact patch of the wheels would be the same (square). At the same time the aero / wind resistance would most likely be the same, as the rear ones would be narrower and front ones wider. Then there is the handling, a square setup does mean its more balanced/can oversteer more. But they could offset this by simply having lower ET on rear wheels (higher track width). So 265/265, 15-20mm more track width rear. Ironically the SR and LR versions have square setup where the P model has staggered.. Staggered is ok for rear wheel drive or for people who are afraid of the rear wheels dancing a bit in winter time etc. so I kindof understand it for some use cases, but for a performance model with AWD, I think square 265 would be the best option. Be aware you cant run square tire setup on OEM YP wheels, as rear ones are wider.

Bears Tires has been around since 1984 as a popular local, sometimes lower-priced alternative to America's largest tire store chain. The only thing to keep in mind is they don't offer a road hazard warranty. About the tire size, the only issue is your speedometer will be a bit inaccurate. You'd have to downsize to a smaller wheel to keep the same ratio. The real problem is 10.5" wide wheels are overkill as are 21" wheels.

I am based in the UK and my MYP is due to arrive next week, it comes with Pirelli so I’ve already ordered 275/35 21 Michelin PS4S for the front and 295/35 21 for the rear to swap out as soon as the vehicle arrives. I also have the Magbak rimcase to give the best protection of the wheel rims against kerb rash. Even if I had gone for 295 Pirelli tires they have more of a stretched look whereas the 295 Michelin tires have a better “shoulder’ closer to 90 degrees.

I think it would be better if Tesla put narrower rims and lower ET, also a square 265 setup at stock for the YP. It's the performance model of the Y line and the staggered setup makes it more understeered.

Yep, the more traditional 8.5" wide wheel would've been adequate. On the Performance models, they use 10. 5" in the back which is way too wide and 9.5" up front. The lower models have 9.5" all around which is still unnecessary.

@@rkgsd yes, it depends on your transportation needs. I dont really need the size of the Y, while it is more practical, I prefer the car size of the 3. It should be said I do prefer the rear hatch of the Y/S/X. However I need a tow hitch, but not for trailers - just for bike rack. So the reason I went to YP was mainly to be able to do a 3 bike rack. The 3 Performance legacy version didnt have a bike rack in Europe, while you can now get 500kg hitch on the refresh 3P. Highland LR 3 does however have a higher load rating, but I wont tow stuff. I did just use a trailer once with the YP.. So instead of having the higher load rating in a much larger car, I will just rent a car that one time a year I have to pull a trailer, or pay someone to drive for me. Then I can sit lower to the ground. I also just have one kid, so we are just 3 people in the car. But driving wise I sit too high in the Y I think.. But the old 3P was lacking with the noise and no hitch.

Just bought new tyres in Australia for my Model Y RWD. For the 19" Gemini alloy I only had the OEM Hankook Ventus EVO E3 tyres at $495 AUD ea. or Michelin EV tyres at $550 AUD each to choose from in 255/45R19. I had some new 20" alloys I had bought for my Kona electric which had the same PCD and offset as the Y RWD. So I got a set of Delmax Ultra Sport 255/45ZR20 105W fitted for $150 AUD each. A little more road noise and a 5% increase in energy consumption but for a saving of $1400 AUD I couldn't be happier. Sailun Tire have released an EV range but not available in OZ yet but are available in the US.

I'm in the same boat with my 22 MYP. After 14,000 miles, the stock rear tires (P-Zeros) are down to a 3 measurement while the fronts are at 6. Was thinking about changing the rears to 295/35 and then the fronts to 275/35 when they wear down but some of the comments have me concerned. 1. Will this cause warranty problems with Tesla? 2. Has anyone measured the range loss? I"m not concerned with 5%-10% but some mentioned 20%+. 3. How much will this change affect my speedometer +/-? 4. Will changing the rears to 295/35 and leaving the fronts at 255/35 cause a problem since the fronts have a different height than the rears? I haven't thought about cars this much since I modified my 86 Mustang GT almost 35 years ago!!!

You used mismatched tires on the front and rear...that's a very bad decision...should have changed all 4 to the same Michelin tire at the same time. Having different tires causes alignment issues and wear issues due to the different grip/method the tires grip the road. That said, I don't think going 295 on the rear offered anything over stock. I guess it's worth doing if you find a deal or better price over the stock tire size. People say the ride is better but I find that to be silly. It's not a better ride using thicker tires.

My concern here would be that you are going with a larger size in the rear and not upsizing the front at the same time. This seems to me that it would be putting either the front or rear motor in somewhat of a bind upon an acceleration based on how it’s programmed to torque. Now, with that said, if both tires was up at the same time, it seems well established that our Teslas are actually going about 2 mph slower than what is indicated on the speedometer., with that said, a larger tire may correct this. Not only would it correct that but over a period of 120,000 miles with the factories offset you’re actually getting cheated out of about 1000 miles from your warranty.

You are correct it will, in fact change the speedometer. However, the Tesla is actually going 2 mph slower than what is shown on the speedometer, even 3 mph once the tire wears down enough. it seems that a lot of manufacturers do this for liability reason. Perhaps getting the larger tire would actually compensate for the factories offset making it correct and not cheating you out of about 1000 miles off your warranty of 120,000. My concern with his process is that he’s not upsizing the front at the same time as the rear. Thus, I’m wondering what type of an effect it would have on binding of the front and rear motors torque upon a acceleration.
