Kyrgyzstan was probably the country we were most excited about when planning this around the world motorcycle trip. And it did not dissapoint!!
After a tricky crossing of China, we were incredibly excited to enter Kyrgyzstan. The moment you cross the border you are welcomed by the most beautiful mountainious landscapes fulled with yurts and wild horses roaming free. It could be the location for the next Hobbit films.
Unfortunately it wasn't all fairy tales and pictoresque landscapes. 10km in and we had a puncture in James' rear tyre, and then it kept popping every 20km after that. It really was a thorn in our side and slowing us down on what was meant to be the highlight of our entire trip.
But these things happen on trips like this and you just have to deal with it. We had to adjust our plans slightly, but we pressed on and headed to the Tossor Pass with the goal of getting to issyk kul Lake. But Kyrgyzstan and more curve balls to throw our way! What followed was without doubt the most adventurous day we have had on this trip so far, and our DR650s were really put to the test.
This is only part 1 of the adventure - the tip of our Kyrgyzstan journey.
Enjoy

Fantastic adventure, real tough trip requiring great resilience. Amazing footage. Truly admirable. So hard to deal with serial punctures. Had one day in Eastern Turkey way back when (1973) when I punctured four times - the last time the valve ripped out. Luckily I'd kept a tube from India that had a 5cm split in it. We used every valcanizing patch we had left and - it worked! Got to Istanbul on it. Put on a new tyre and tube, then ... my bike got stolen! Lucky thieves! So, I know what it feels like to deal with that hardship and totally respect the way you handled it. Amazing adventure. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Steven. Sounds like you really do know how we felt haha, sorry to hear about your bike in Istanbul. @@Northandleftabit It was my own fault that the bike got stolen. We had been hauling the bikes up these steps into the hotel. On the 3rd night we went to a famous travellers hangout called " The Pudding Shop". We got incredibly drunk on raki. When we returned to the hotel we were in no conditionn to haul the bikes up the steps and next morning mine was gone. My hangover was sobad I didn't really feel too cut up by the loss of the bike. Besides, had some big problems to confront: how to get out of Turkey WITHOUT the bike and the challenge of making it to London two-up on a Honda CB175. In late November. It was freezing but we made it. Wouldn't have changed a thing.

Incredible scenery and you guys are proper mental to be attempting that snowy rocky pass on a bike that already has a dodgy tire issue. I suppose this is once in a lifetime kind of opportunity. We had a situation where my friend who just happened to be on a DR650 had his back tire popping constantly. For him, it wasn't the rim strip, but the patch basically just wouldn't hold. What helped was actually pumping the tire up to like 50 psi to prevent the tire, and therefore tube, from flexing and wearing out the patch. After that, it was smooth sailing until we got another tube. Also, we always carry Gorilla brand duct tape with us which is just incredibly sticky and strong. I actually don't use rim strips on any of my bikes, I just put that tape on. Never had a puncture from the spoke.
@williamd1891
@williamd1891 2 жыл бұрын
LOL. I also use Gorilla tape as rim tape on my Downhill MTB. Best rim tape out there. Pain in the ass to remove though. You will need toxic chemicals to remove all the tape residue.

FYI. If you find yourself with similar tire problems in remote locations as this. You can wrap rope around the spokes then electrical tape to insulate and shield the tube from the spokes. Also, check your spoke tension if this keeps happening, you can also use strips of denim instead of wound rope.

Hi guys, Well, yet another superb installment. You both have the bloody patience of saints; repairing tyres is a right PITA; you’d think someone would’ve come up with a better solution than tubes. I notice Lyndon Poskit used a mousse, but not Ideal for the road. The scenery is just off the scale, I just luv places like that; hence why we moved to the Pyrenees. The next episode is likely to be erm interesting! Thank you both again for taking the time and effort to film and edit this; great for us lot watching and for you both to look back on too. ATB. Hi, loving your central asia videos. We drove from Scotland to Kirgizsran and back in 2016, not the direct route. Your videos remind us how privileged we are to have done the trip. We also got lost between Tash Rabat and Song Kul. Missed a turn hidden under a small river! Luckily a friendly local put us right, before we spent too long heading in the wrong direction. We were more lucky with the weather and everywhere was stunningly beautiful. The day crossing from Kirgizstan to Tadjikistan was also mind blowing, apart from the officials at the border crossing who were the oppostite. Also really enjoyed the Wakkan Valley. Thanks for all your hard work editing and posting. Not as much fun as the doing...

Oh guys I had to watch this episode 3 times now cause I am waiting for the next ... ^^ Seriously this one was the most dramatic episode. Epic struggles on the snow mountain. Haha. I was a little concerned to be honest. I hope u got yourself some more spares tubes James. I couldn't believe how many stops u had because of a f... flat tire ^^ But that's what an adventure actually is about, right? A good rubber glue would help in these situations as well I guess or this kind of flattire foam .. Do you leave one nut on the valve before putting in the tube? And then a second against the rim (never too tight!! ) and never too much pressure on the tire. In case the tube moves inside the tire.. that's when the valves burst off very often. So tube needs some 'play'. U guys know this stuff, I know. So.. as we haven't seen any new content yet, I hope u are doing great somewhere out there without internet and surprise us with a new episode very soon! Just bought myself an old HONDA XRV 750 Africa Twin to crush the balkan this year. YEWW!

And now when i'm seeing this video - i'm so glad that we made that decision (being on two 250 kg bikes). cheers!

You guys are definitely living (lived) the dream. This is the part of the journey that I've been waiting for. Punctures....shit they are a pain. Back in 2018 a mate an I spent a month in Vietnam 🇻🇳 riding small bikes from north to south. My mate had so many punctures we exhausted our supply of tubes. We couldn't see why or what was causing the punctures. We ended up putting a new tyre on and never had one again. So I feel for you guys. Looking forward to the next episode. 😀

Cheers Darryl, it really was a downer but I suppose it made the highs even better. Also that damn Motoz tyre is great but it's side walls are so hard it's a nightmare to put on. The next episode should be a good one if we can find all the footage, it becomes a real adventure what we stupidly decide to do the next morning when we wake up haha

Unlucky. I rode 5000km South to north Vietnam over 40 days in 2019 and didn’t get one puncture (rented a Crf250l)

@@Northandleftabit Excellent. Looking forward to the next episode then. The side walls on those and Heidenau tires are just overkill. But they are cheap and will go further than a more conventional adventure bike tyre.

@@alrightdave6135 I know man. It's probably been more than 100,000kms since my last puncture. You must have had a good trip. My mate and I were going back in 2020 for 60 days to do Cambodia and Laos. Pandemic put a stop to that, but hopefully it looks like the world is slowly opening up again so we are planning on going next year.

Hahah. I'm not the only one who drys laundry on the back of the bike. I usually have a pair of undies back there drying in the wind. What an awesome video!!!! The Stans did not disappoint. I guess if you are going to keep stopping to fix tires, stopping in beautiful places is better.
@Northandleftabit

Yep all the drying of laundry although doesn't help when it's raining and snowing the whole times. It's very true I'd rather be tuck looking at that scenery then again next to a highway someone might be been able to help haha. Next episode will be out on the weekend, where we get ourselves into even more trouble

Guys, I’ve just discovered your channel and I love it. I’ve been wanting to do this trip for years now. I’ve even got the bike (a DR, what else) and ample riding experience. I know from the trips I’ve taken so far that I can handle myself once on the road. I think about selling my house and riding off every other day. No big life commitments otherwise. The thing is: I’m so scared. Scared of leaving behind the safety of home, the comfort of living in a modern, wealthy country. Scared that I’ll start feeling lonely and depressed two weeks in. Scared that it won’t be the epic journey to cure the lingering existential dread I had in mind. Scared that I’ll fail. What is your perspective on this? Did you have trouble pulling the trigger? Ride safe!

electrical tape works for rim tape as well and check the inside of tire very carefully the surface of tube tire needs to abraded by sandpaper , in mexico i have watched the tire quys scrape with razor blade and gas and just apply patch after gas flashed off(no glue ),,, using glue it needs to dry for a minute of so
