Just to make sure that ure machine is fine or the pressure gauge or sensor is fine. U can try doing this. Put on a double walled basket on ure portafilter it doesnt matter if its a 2 cup or 1 cup as long as ure using the double walled basket. Put it on ure portafilter no need to put any coffee empty will do. Pull a shot ure pressure gauge should go 10 or 11 o clock.

A lot of people are finding the better tasting shots at borderline choking the machine - ie upwards of 30 seconds for a 1:2 ratio. My theory is because it uses a 54mm portafilter and the 25second rule is based on a 58mm portafilter, the 54mm portafilter's puck is narrower and thicker, meaning the water needs more time to properly work through the thicker puck. So, I was not surprised that the finer grind setting produced a better result - it is consistent with what other users experienced.

I have owned a Breville 840xl for 12 years and now I got an Infuser(which is basically the same). In my 12 years of tries the most important thing is fresh coffee. I source my coffee from a local roaster shop and I always take it within 4 days of roasting date and use it in most 10 days. Also I like to only have one variable to work with and that is the grind. I have a click tamper, a scale and fresh coffee. The only thing that I have to modify is the grind. But I also have a Breville Pro grinder that has lots of adjustments for the grind.

So my Barista Express arrived today while I was at work. I stopped and bought Eight O'clock Espresso Roast, strictly because of the price, and figured I was going to have to do a lot of testing & wasting. I couldn't get the pressure figured out, and your video was the first one that popped up when I started researching. The pressure is perfect now, and just like you said - it's not the greatest, but it works out great for a latte! I'll be stopping by a local shop near my work on Monday to pick-up some legit fresh beans. Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the video Hoon, helps newbies like me out! That’s what I’ve found also with older, lesser quality beans, that I have to grind them so fine and almost choke the machine to get a decent shot. At first I thought that’s what’s normal, but when I tried fresh beans, grind setting 7 and mid range on the pressure, the shot was perfect! So bean quality and freshness is definitely and huge factor, if not the main factor in pulling great shots. But at the same time, this machine is capable of getting decent shots out of older, lesser quality beans. Keep the videos coming my man!

I'm going to try that before I replace my current grinder. Unfortunately, it could be a while before I can get actual fresh beans to try that with.

If anyone has a low extraction pressure this is the answer also. Did a little bit of homework on the reason why we get low pressure. So the reason is because the water is passing through the coffee and not giving a back pressure (little bit of hydraulic theory) especially with the filter that has more holes in it (single wall). So what did was put the grinder to setting 1, this will make the grounds finer thus more compact. I did not use a setting for the amount, i just manually grinded as needed, this is so I don't waste. When i packed it, I pushed down a little harder than I would with the double wall with the packer tool. Make sure its packed down really tight, put some elbow into it. Then used the razor. This perfected the pressure to come right in the middle of the "ideal espresso". Hope this helps!
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, if it's going too fast or there isn't enough pressure you go with finer grounds and/or tamp harder. The problem comes when you're already on the finest grind that the grinder can manage and you're still not getting enough pressure. To an extent, you can tamp harder and watch out for channeling, but if that's not enough, then you might need to just get a better grinder or accept the need for a pressurized basket.
@joenrs
@joenrs 4 жыл бұрын
Chris L I bought the same machine 2 months ago and I can’t build pressure unless I keep the grind at it’s finest (#1) and overfill the single wall basket. Every time I use the razor I get zero pressure. I always make sure to really tamper my pucks but can’t seem to find where the issue comes from. My sister bought the same machine and I easily get pressure with hers. Any advice?

I’ve had my breville about 2 weeks and the first time I used the single wall I couldn’t get pressure. Hoon suggested going finer and I guess it was the pressure I was tamping needed to be harder and once I put my elbow into it I was able to get a nice puck and a pressure at about 12 o’clock when I pulled the shot. I was also only at an outer grind setting of 3 with my lavassa super crema coffee. So I still have a little room to play with.

Thank you for this. I got used to making espresso with my cheaper machine (Delonghi 15 bar)and an adjustable hand grinder (150 turns) When the 2nd machine finally started leaking like a sieve I finally bit the bullet and moved up to this "big girl"(boy?) home espresso machine. Even though it's not a commercial machine it does take some dialing in to get a desirable espresso. I love the way you go through the problem solving and nuances thoughtfully, clearly and patiently.

Lovin the channel Hoon, keep on experimenting. I think the takeaway lesson here is that if you’re into coffee enough that you’re going to invest a lot of money getting a decent machine (back off coffee machine snobs, this is an expensive machine for me), then you really need to buy good freshly roasted beans, not from a supermarket. 👍

I’m having problems with my machine too. I got it a few days ago. I watched a bunch of videos anyway I’m setting my outside grinder number to 10 yesterday and it worked perfectly. It stayed right in the gray area where it was supposed to and I use the same coffee and did the same exact thing today and it didn’t work. I had to put it all the way down to seven and then finally it works but it’s so weird because I didn’t do anything different yet one day 10 works and the next day seven works so it’s really confusing.

RonnyKohlmann No, when it comes to fresh roast beans, lighters roasts need to be ground finer, darker more coarse. Every coffee is different and will need to be adjusted accordingly. Also the grind setting will need to be adjusted throughout the week as they become more exposed to the air, not to mention humidity which changes all the time. For the coffee I buy, I set to 4 or 5, I also adjusted the inner burr finer by 1 notch.

Hello Hoon. Does making the coffee grounds coarser create more pressure? It seems like if the grounds were finer they would create more pressure. Thank you for your videos!!!

Actually finer grind makes more pressure.

Hey Hoon, I actually realized I mistook the higher numbers on my barista express as the finer settings. So I was dialing it coarser (thinking it was finer) and getting less pressure. Your videos have helped me so much. Thank you buddy :)

It took me a LONG time to dial in my Breville Barista Express (I live in the U.S.). Hoon does a great job of explaining how to dial in the shot, and there are a few other channels that do, as well. First things first: the beans matter - A LOT. As shown in this video, you'll be chasing the settings if you use cheap beans. Make sure that the beans you're using aren't oily, either; that will really clog the burrs in the grinder. Second: use a kitchen scale to get the amount of ground coffee - the dial on the Brevile is ONLY for the amount of time. Third: with some beans, you may need to increase the amount of coffee by a few grams (no more than 20 g, however). Fourth: If you've already increased the amount of coffee to about 18 g without any change in the pressure, then start dialing back the grind settings. Breville comes with a factory setting of "5," but I found that it was not adequate to get good pressure with the locally roasted coffee I have been using. I eventually made an adjustment to the grind settings on the burrs themselves so that I could grind finer (there's a KZfaq video for how to do it - it's pretty easy). Fifth: the tamper that comes with the Breville is for beginners; get a good one like Hoon uses - I bought the same one and it was a revelation.

It takes 5 seconds before the coffee comes out. Then 3 to 5 seconds till the needle reaches the pressure zone then stops immediately.

Hi! me again! ok, so i'm going to throw this one at you. I have always brewed using the double basket and dose. Ive been using Lavazza Rossa. I decided to try the single (unpressurised) basket. I used the same grind setting as double but the single dose, tamped the same (medium pressure) pressure off the scale, extraction very slow, bitter crap. Have you experimented with the single basket? Its just for those times when i want a lighter drink, less caffeine etc.

My experience is the same as yours. Good extraction with double espresso tends to be overextracted when brewing single espresso.

The pressurized basket is more foregiving of mistakes. It's really intended for when you have to use ground coffee from the store rather than grinding it yourself. It does an OKish job, but it also limits how good the results can be. If you were only able to afford the espresso machine or the grinder, it's a way of making due with the machine while you save up for the grinder. Not ideal, but it does work.

Hi sir. Did you make the pressure less than from factory setting? Because your machine’s pressure is low than 15 bar. My regards 🌹

I use eight-o’clock coffee for my first grind after I clean the burrs with instant/minute rice and after doing a back flush for the first brew. I might switch to the organic Costco for theses duties.

I just got a niche zero and noticed that my breville chokes at extracting even at 22-24 setting with 17g. I am wondering what I might be doing wrong. I thought I needed to go higher numbers as my breville can't handle fine beans but now I am sure I am doing something wrong.

I would play with increasing dosage like 1g at a time. See if that helps with the pressure. Make sure its still about 1/8” from top of portafilter. The razor is helpful as a guide.

1. clean the grinder 2. De-scale the machine if still no pressure 3. the coffee is off (its not fresh) get new coffee from a roaster. If none of these work its time to buy a new machine.

That is a great question Chris. It does change the pressure but more so with grinder setting. Obviously, finer the setting has more pressure,
