The red pockets lmaoo most of my chinese relatives at their weddings literally sit by the entrance of the restaurant to collect them and write the amount on a red book before finally letting us enter It is kinda hilarious
@wsrkklove23 жыл бұрын
It’s also very hilarious when the host of western wedding mentions that anyone who show just causes why the couple may not be joined together is allowed to speak now. Do they really expect or approve someone to object to the wedding on the day of the wedding and in front of the guests? What a scene if this happens.

Cantonese here, is that a region specific practice or just in GuangDong?
@amyhao47183 жыл бұрын
@@260830107 I think that is country-wide. People write the amount down so that they remember how much they should give back when the attendees/guests have a future wedding. In Shanghai, we even calculate the final amount with annual inflation before we give the red pockets. That is a lot of work and I think we should definitely get rid of this red pocket thing for weddings, especially many people nowadays choose not to get married for life (meaning they will never get the money back if they attended other weddings before)
@sontrajamfemininegaze1453 жыл бұрын
@@wsrkklove2 It doesn't usually happen haha - only in movies, books and TV. The idea is to give a "last chance" to speak if you are against the marriage. If you don't use your last chance, you are obligated to be supportive of the couple forevermore! This obligation is meant to protect the union of the wedded couple from external conflict. :)

Yea! I did my time doing that too! We had to also check (after the guest left) and verify the amount was what they stated it was

In Germany people usually also gift money as wedding presents. Though they usually don't gift as much as in Asia. But therefore a lot of people are getting creativr and make money origami and make little miniature landscapes to fit the folded money :3

I got married via videoconference and my Chinese family STILL insisted on sending money. I've never sent them money before and would have preferred that they didn't send me money. I just don't like having money-exchange relationships or oweing people stuff. And it wasn't like we had a reception or anything. In my books, wedding gifts are a way to pay for the hospitality. That's the only way I can justify it. Either way, my family insisted. If I didn't give them my mailing address, my mom accepted the envelopes for me and forced me to deposit the checks. My closer relatives gave me an upwards of $10000 (USD) apiece.
