Landscaping advice: choose a handful of plants and then plant them in larger quantities. So don’t plant one juniper, plant three, don’t plant 10 different flowers, plant 3 types of flowers but plant three or five or seven of each type. Landscaping is big picture so don’t have a ton of tiny dots everywhere, create sweeps or bunches of plants. Also, choose a colour theme, I am organizing my yard by colour. The front (south facing) is reds and yellows and orange, the east side of my house is pinks and whites and the west side is blues and purples. Or do what feels best to you 😊

New garden rule: Always wait 1 year to see your garden through each season before you decide what to change. There will be things in the garden that are dormant still. Some stuff might look dead but it will probably re-emerge later in the season.

After gardening for over 10 years, here are my tips for designing an outdoor garden area: -1.) Start with the Soil!! The soil is the most important part of any garden and is where plants get vital nutrients. Amending the soil in your garden and adding compost will help with water retention (which is vital in California) and healthy plant growth. -2.) Choose a color palette. I know you may like an eclectic style in the garden. However, too many colors in a garden can look like a jumble. Choosing specific colors and repeating them throughout a space will help with uniformity and cohesion in a space. It will also help give your eye somewhere to rest. -3.) Get to know your space. Spaces in the garden are ever changing. Getting to know the conditions (water, sun exposure, soil conditions, wind, etc.) in the space your are designing is vital for a gardens success. In your case, choosing shade tolerant perennials with deep root systems will help keep your garden looking pretty all year round and protect your house from erosion. -4.) Visit your garden center each month. Depending on the time of year, a garden center is constantly cycling through flowering plants. Going to a garden center and purchasing flower plants each month will help ensure a succession of bloom in the garden for year round color. -5.) Go Native! Not only are native plants low maintenance and well adapted to your local conditions, they attract wildlife and pollinators, which benefits the environment. -6.) Take out invasive plants. Invasive plants like Ivy are harmful to the environment. Not only do they tax the soil, but their shallow roots are also not great at preventing erosion. Planting native perennials will be better for the environment. Their deep tap roots will also prevent erosion. -7.) Don’t be afraid to take things out. Gardens are never permanent, so you should not waste time dealing with plants that don’t bring you joy. They are just plants in the end. 8.) Start with a blank slate. Especially when buying a house, you may feel stuck with the garden space the previous owners created. Starting with a blank slate will help you create a personalized space that you want to spend time in. I hope these tips help.

Just like you mapped out your kitchen to see what you want to do. Map out your yard. Pay attention to where the sun is because that will make a difference in what you choose to go where. You can also map out existing plants. You can also hire a landscape architect to create a landscape plan for you… Or collaborate with another channel!

Geranium tip: do not water them over head. The flower blooms will die when they get wet. Water the base of the plant to save the blooms 😊🌸

Some advice on the garden...live in the space this year. Watch how the sun falls on the property. See what plants you have already. And just plant some annual flowers this year. That way you will have color and blooms all season long and in the meantime you can see what all is in your garden (plants, colors ect) and next year you can go into it and plant your perianuals with more confidence. Just a thought 😉

Consider planting in pots this year so if a plant is not flourishing in one spot you can more easily re-locate it to an area where it will thrive. I would absolutely ask your gardeners for advice and maybe they can identify some of the plants you have right now.

Hello, I’m a landscape designer and taking note of the architectural style of your house and your plans to style the house in a French provincial aesthetic - I’d personally bring that theme into the garden. When we moved into our house my friend, who is an amazing gardener, suggested that I go on many walks around our neighbourhood to see what plants were flourishing and what styles of gardens that I like. Take pictures (in a non-creepy way 😉) and then look them up later. Also I have found that people who like to garden are very generous about sharing their knowledge and sometimes even plants when they thin out their garden beds ❤

For a big table cloth, buy super king size flat cotton bed sheet, and machine it round, I’ve done that and it went really well xxx

For the sunny areas of the gard you should really get lavender and rosmary and put them in pots - they do really well in the heat and the sun and you see them everywhere in the south of France :) They also smell lovely which is really wonderful to experience when you go out into the garden area :) Especially rosmary lasts a long time

The pretty little blue flowers are Scilla, also known as Bluebells. They are bulbs. As a kid, we also had them in pale pink and white.

Gardening advice: you need to know what kind of soil your dealing with (clay, sandy, etc) and how much sunlight the area your planting is going to get. That will determine which plants will grow well. Good tip - walk around your neighbourhood and choose plants your neighbours are growing that look healthy. Personally I would get rid of 90% of those vines as they are not adding anything to your garden and look kind of wild and out of control. I’d pick a few colours of plants that complement each other so it’s not too much of one colour. Your lucky you have a lovely outside space

After 36 years in Florida gardening bliss, we moved to the middle of Alabama where I could not put a shovel past 1l2 an inch in the soil... Lots to learn...my favorites are: plumeria, lambs ear, hostas, camellia shrubs, azaleas, gardenia, jasmine, potted moonflower vines, clematis, angel trumpets, canna, and hardy hibiscus...reliable and almost everyone returns each year. Have fun gardening at your new lovely home!! 😊 You can also soil test weird spots.

Garden hints! Things thrive with the right amount of water and LIGHT. I would check every two hours and see where the sun hits for how long. I think the best thing to do for permanent things in your garden is to wait a year to see the seasonal changes to the space- where the rain falls, where the sun lands, whatnot-and get an idea of what you actually have so you can better plan what you want and what’s feasible for the space. Until then, go wild with annuals so you can enjoy the space this year and get a soil test kit so you know if you need amending

Lavender is a safe plant, great for mass planting and would suit any garden. Also super easy to care for.

When I arrived in my home, I planted a little flower tree with pink flowers, I’m not sure what it is, I bought it at Home Depot, and I kept so many labels of all the plants I bought, that I don’t know what is what. Long story short, the plant became so big that it became taller than me and even started growing above my car. My gardener had to cut it shorter a few months ago, and it is now regrowing again. In summer, it has many pink little flowers. It may be the super bell flowers pink gem, but I’m not sure. It needs full sun and as I am in L.A. and we are baking in summer, it’s perfect. It’s just beautiful! It doesn’t need a lot of work. My rose tree grows nicely too but it needs some water in the evening twice a week in summer.

Hi! Landscape designer here! So so happy that you are doing some gardening work! I definitely think you could benefit from waiting just so you can take stock of what you have and what you like! Couple of things to keep in mind.. I don’t know what kind of light that space gets but it has looked shaded when you’ve shown it so be mindful of getting plants with light requirements that match the space. You can also get your soil tested to get a better sense of what you might need to add to boost its health.. But can’t go wrong with organic compost worked into the soil and even used as mulch. I also love using Bio Tone Starter Fertilizer when I plant something to give it a nice head start. Beyond that, consistent watering at the base of the plant is key. I recommend setting up a drip system if you don’t have one already. Can be intimidating at first, but you are no stranger to research and figuring out a new skill! You’ll pick it up quickly! I highly recommend the youtube channel Garden Answers. They upload everyday and have a wealth of info for beginner and experienced gardeners. Cant wait to see how the space develops! Happy to do some sketches/plans free of charge too!

I would really wait a full year before you tackling the garden. Keep track of what blooms where and when and then evaluate what you want to add and when it blooms. What is a dead space in April can spring up in June!

I love jasmine and lavender. They smell so nice when you're sitting ,relaxing, just enjoying nature. And theycome back every year, I think.

Kinsley is the most beautiful baby ever! Also, you should have the water pressure checked. It may just be an old fixture, but if the pressure isn’t regulated enough it can really cause issues with appliances. It’s an easy test and easy fix if it’s not regulated well. :)

First step MaCenna you need to fix the soil, buy soil that is filled with nutrients and that will allow good drainage, soil that has coconut fibres, permites, some composting would be good also!

My advice for the garden is: talk to your gardners! Ask them what some of the plants are, etc...

That’s why I don’t want to own anymore! I’m tired of fixing everything myself 🥺 My husband of 36yrs just up & asked for a separation but he was never around anyways. So, I’m tired of fixing things 😢 I am refusing to live in anger but I definitely have a really big change in life & it’s going to be hard, so that’s why I don’t want to own anything anymore.

Love the back garden . I’ve been working in my garden more and more and I’m in love with starting flowers from seed ..But after you finish cleaning all of the dead leaves and plants, I would definitely freshen up the soil in the first level of your brick wall with some potting soil, perlite and then pick a 3-5 different spring flowers in pots so it’s easy for you to just transplant . You can also prune some of your existing plants and make some cuttings . Propagate them in water and eventually you can replant them in your garden . Research your florals or even herbs you would like to plant .

I am all about gardening - nothing like starting with a clean slate. I always use bio tone starter/soil when I plant new babies. I also add it to my existing plants/perennials just to give them a little extra boost for a new season. I’m still learning after 15 years of gardening. Definitely mulch to keep it nice and tidy. Let your backyard speak to you.. You will figure it out, you can’t go wrong. English garden is my love language.❤

When you called Kinsley a princess in the garden it reminded me of my house growing up in California! We had an elevated area of the yard that my dad made into ‘princess land’ with wooden built in steps up the tiny hill into a clearing with a rock retaining wall and flowers and trees surrounding!

Get some soil test kits and take samples of different areas. Once you know the pH etc you can amend the soil to be the best for your plants. Think of your colour wheel when organizing planting areas. Purples and yellows together are very eye catching, orange and blues together, red white and greenery look amazing as well. Also when doing perennial gardens, look at flowering times for your area. I have iris's that bloom early in mauve/white tones that come out early and they are bulbs so very easy to split and spread around in the fall. Where I want separation to showcase plants I use cardboard cut to whatever area I want and put mulch overtop. Keeps weeds down and breaks down over the year and add to your soil. The mulch also helps retain the moisture. Have fun and remember little plants grow big, don't overcrowd! lol

Almost anything will grow in your zone but one must start for the soil. Good soil ensures planting success. Add some compost to the soil and a bit of organic fertilizer in the hole before planting. It would be a wise move to install irrigation. After that you just need to make sure the plants have the right amount of sun, some are for more shaded areas, some are for full sun. You can find that information in the tag. It appears you have already chosen your colour palette so go for it. And as they say here don't get just one of each, get 3 or 5, use the same principles you use for interior design when designing the landscape. You got this.

Compost, bone meal, Top dressing or mulch, rake the first two into the Beds plant and spread the Mulch around the plants, it will hold moisture so it won't evaporate. Try putting up Bat houses, they eat musquitos by the thousands!

Lavender, roses , and some hostess as they will do will do well in shade. Also give you that French/ English garden sense. Foxglove are great to as they self seed n amazing colours. Xx

Black Kow Manure corrects all soil and I use it every Spring in my garden to give my plants a nutrient boost. Pick plants you love for the foliage instead of the flowers.

So much good advice here for you McKenna and I have to say that amending the soil is priority. Plants are expensive and you don't want to kill them. The ones that still live in your garden may be the tougher more invasive types. Best help comes from neighbour's and local nurseries! For fun and colour this year, use pots that can be moved around as needed.

Highly recommend planting an herb garden…rosemary , thyme , oregano are all super easy to grow/ maintain and smell good too😍…plant near kitchen’s back door or in some of the large containers you have in brick patio area? Also be sure to review any potential plants you want for toxicity( through touch or ingesting) to Kinsley( I think geraniums are?!) since she is able to get into the flower bed areas.

" Linda Vetter", " Garden Answer" and "Dig, Plant, Water , Repeat" are a few of my favorites. My husband just retired a month ago and I haven't cook since he retired. Garden advice: repeating what I’ve seen others say in the comments: go for a few types of plants and plant them multiple times to create a theme. Also sticking to a color theme will make it look more cohesive. In addition, see what the sun exposure is like for that area of the garden, and make sure you are planting things that do well in that area. It seems like part shade, so choose plants that do best in part shade. Also, think about foliage, because most plants will not be blooming year round. Finally, the form and size of the plant is important; it may be upright, sprawling, drooping, etc. for plants on walls I like to have some sprawling/cascading plants because it softens the hard edged of the brick into the landscape. The final size of the plant is also important to consider when you are choosing placement because you want enough space for everything to grow without competition. But at the end of the day, just choose what speaks to you!!

Soil, soil, soil. Remove at least the top four inches of soil where you can and where you can't add two to four inches of a compost blend. Best choice would be Espoma Land and Sea. Glad you're giving yourself some time on the garden planting. More geraniums was brillant since you know they've been successful.

I recommend getting plants native to your area. They're better for the environment & low maintenance!

I needed a very large Tablecloth. I also wanted a heavy nubby linen. I did a lot of looking and finally found a heavy linen king size sheet. Take a look at the linen from Brooke Linen. Their linen is good. I think you have some. That's what happens when every bit of your bedroom shows up on KZfaq 🙂

I wake every morning and watch Laura on Garden Answer with my coffee. So much practical information and she also likes to learn from her viewers just like you do. ALSO START BY AMENDING YOUR SOIL or not much will do well and you will be unhappy and frustrated. It's your space and is an extension of you and we all know what happens when you feel challenged. Make changes because you can always fix it with something else. It's never permanent.

I would highly recommend finding a local garden center. They'll be able to give you advice on your area and often can help with some landscaping ideas and plant groupings

I didn't even touch my garden until my second spring in our house (mostly cause I was overwhelmed) but it was actually great to really learn all the plants that were already there and how the sun and plants changed through the season and I was able to create a thorough plan for the next year!

Gardening tip: Try as best you can to plant native!! You can do some research on which plants are native to your area. Good for the land, good for the ecosystem, etc etc

I saw someone comment on the last video, but want to boost the idea! You should make the entry room into a library! You can collect books again and have it a little bit of seating or even a small nook area mixed with your paintings anf frames :)

it's a good time to put up some hummingbird feeders. When I'm planting, replanting, or adding to the land around my house it's usually green bushes and/or flowers that do not attract bees. Being allergic to bees I stay as far away from them as possible.

Someone lease suggested king flat bedsheet. Fabric stores also sell 108 wide fabric for quilt backing and natural muslin also comes 108 to 110 wide which you could cut in a circle and hem. You can also use home decor fabric. Buy two 108 lengths, cut one in half lengthwise and sew one half to each side. Then cut your circle and hem. Since you have a fashion background and know how to sew that should be pretty easy for you.

Shower head advice: I know you didn't like the old shower head but having a handheld it so handy for cleaning the shower.

Definitely need a rake to rake all the dead foliage. A spray washer to clean the brick and layer plants by growth height. Excited to see what you come up with.

Geraniums are a great choice, their gorgeous , winter hardy and easy to start new pots from cuttings. Look at your neighbors landscape and take note of what’s thriving, this will give you an idea for your yard. I also planted violets in the yard here and there so pretty and smell heavenly. Now that’s it’s warmer have you tried out the pool!

Actually Macenna : just wait this season out before adding ANYTHING you’ll plant, let them grow and flower. Ask your previous owners for photos in case you don’t want to disturb them with too many questions. You can get their gardener’s contact even! My tip is have a small stone-water-grass-fern feature in the dry corner … you can easily shift or dismantle it if you find that the flowering plants around it grow. If they wither, and not even the grass or fern works just have the stone and water abd make it a zen corner!

Geraniums are good, they're colorful and super hardy. The purple flowers in your yard I believe are Lily of the Nile.

If it hasn't already been recommended, look into Creeping Jenny for your garden! It is easy to grow, spreads quickly, and would look GREAT spilling over your brick planter walls! Also, being a Texan, I'm so jealous every time I see folks just poking and puttering around their gardens without a thought there could be a snake in there!

With the shower. Check your water pressure. There's water pressure regulator where the outside water shutoff valve is normally. Ours has gone out a couple times and you could hear the high pressure in the pipes when we showered, don't want to burst a pipe. Easy to replace .But if it was strong enough to kick off the showered head and break something it might be too high. Always good to check!

I like English gardens. The garden at my last house had so many different kinds and colors of flowers. The key is have lots of different heights. I also had it set up where once my spring bulbs were dying off other plants would feel in over the empty space. If you ever want to trade work I am down! I love gardening and doing landscaping, but I am not as good at styling home decor. Honestly I think you will make it look beautiful. Can’t wait for your outside makeover video.

Advice: wait a year and just watch what happens. If you want, put some annuals in pots for extra colours. But it's still early in the year and you don't know what bulbs or shrubs might still come up. Our new neighbours killed the most beautiful patch of peonies because they couldn't wait for spring to start planting new things. That gives you time to see what grows well in your neighbours gardens and what you would love colourwise and conceptwise.

I think you would love Garden Answers . They live in Oregon and her older ones are lovely also. I know you live in the city and plants can also destroy rock work of planters. The love that rockworker for your home can outlive every part of your home if done right. This country has all or part of fireplaces still standing to mark the homes that were once there. Plants roots even take time in mostly digging in to the cement grout , unlike wood that riots and decays with vines and insects turning it into soil again. On that note with retaining walls I would stay away from hard thick rooted bushes. And you can get home soil test, but the best is set off with a summary of how to improve it.

I've been preparing for my first garden lately as well! I definitely suggest saving seeds from tomatoes/fruits and trying out growing your favorite foods. It's a whole lot easier than you'd think, and I'm having fun seeing what can grow!! I already have plants from halloween pumpkin seeds, sunflowers, and tomato plants ready to go outside
