For the last 12 weeks, I've been doing The Artist's Way! The Artist's Way is a guided creative journey that I've seen recommended by productivity bros and woo woo hippies and that combination intrigued me so much that I DID IT MYSELF. This new chapter of my life seemed like the right time to start! I did "The Artist's Way" as part of my coursework during my master's. At the time I was working as a barista to put myself through school, and I absolutely refused to get up half an hour earlier to do the morning pages. 3:30am? No, thank you. I would frequently just write, "I HATE THIS" with each word on a separate page when I didn't have the time or energy at 4am to be doing a "real" morning pages situation. I have a lot of feelings about Julia Cameron (most of them unpleasant), and have tried to do the book again now that I'm not a broke uni student but I just can't get past a lot of the assumptions and privileges she writes from.

I feel like I would be more okay with it if they where more aware of it and also kept bringing it up in the work? I think if you are already having a busy day not having an hour time to this is totally valid and 10 minutes should be honored and some cant write endless morning pages why not give alternatives maybe writing a few short sentences on a mobile note app while commuting or keeping a physical journal with you to write stuff down as it comes up.

@@cruelazFrom what I remember, she spends more time in the book arguing that these are excuses rather than acknowledging that actually there are genuine barriers for some folks. There's a lot of "money isn't an excuse" and okay, sure, you don't have to spend money on your artists dates -- but what if you work two jobs and have children? I love the idea of making sure you make time and space for creativity no matter what, but for me Cameron's approach is just dripping in privilege and it often feels like she's doubling down on telling you you're not committed enough if you're not writing three pages in a journal daily. She also name drops her famous friends a lot which irked me lol.

HI!! tiny handed guitar player here! (i say guitar player i literally started learning this year) i use a 3/4 size guitar and it's so much easier, i still struggle with bar chords but i at least can reach everything lol. apparently a lot of professional guitar players also use 3/4 size guitars just because it's more comfortable so i highly recommend! i don't think it changes the sound too much (but as i say i'm not an expert so i'm not sure)

To add, with most instruments your body (and especially hands) can take a while to warm up to the shape of an instrument. I'm a professionally trainer pianist with average sized hands, but with practice (to be fair 3 hours a day for several years) I went from just being able to stretch an octave to like a 9th/10th. (At some point your biology does just come in though lol)

I’d also highly recommend playing an electric guitar as well rather than acoustic. The strings are still steel, but electric guitar necks are so much easier to play, and the general size is so much more comfortable. These days there are a lot of options if you can’t use a big loud amp as well.

I'd find it impossible to ignore all the god/greater force/creative energy stuff! Really good that you can make up your artists days - I've definitely be up for a trip to the globe but I'm not keen on cooking or puzzles. I'd vote for pottery, gardening and gallery visits :)

Definitely felt the same by Week 3, the "spiritual" and pseudo-psychological stuff was getting to me. I also could not relate to her artist examples or the "crazymakers" (like, the blocker of "I can't be a writer because I can't spell" - like literally who ever thinks that??) so much so that I abandoned the book! That said, I found the morning pages a godsend for my anxiety, dumping it all on the page seemed to purge it from my mind, and I still do them most days. And I absolutely love the artist dates as well! Looking forward to the rest of your journey - and maybe it's a sign that I should power through the odd writing in the book.

I woudn't find it particularly suprising if someone had "I can't be a writer because I can't spell" block.

I definitely have several friends who have struggled with being dyslexic and wanting to be a writer. But I think it purely being about "not being able to spell" seems a bit outdated to me. Even on my Creative Writing degree (which was like 14 years ago now, argh) we all had spell check. My dyslexic friends back then struggled more with things like grammar and syntax and getting across what they were trying to say.

I'm so fascinated by your process, Hannah - this is really wonderful. I did the process as best I could (I had 3 small children at the time) in the late '90s. Yeah. A while ago. I didn't have any particular crazy-maker types in my life, but decades later, when one showed up, I recognized the dynamic and kept a distance as soon as possible. I also struggled (and still do, to an extent) with the label "artist" although, like you, it has always been clear to me that I'm a very creative person. Not sure what that says, but since I came to understand from the book and exercises that feeding my creative self was a necessity, I'm not sure what and how I call myself matters. Some of those exercises I don't remember in the sense that I don't remember how I did them and how they worked for me. It did set me on a path of getting child care for my children once a week and taking myself into the city to wander and browse for much of a day, eating on my own in a restaurant with a good book (or even a bad book - it was so great to feel free and alone for a bit). A little over two years ago I heard/saw an interview with Julia Cameron on youtube - it was extremely disconcerting as I'd never seen her or heard or actual speaking voice - but also very powerful. I dipped back in the book some, but mostly started doing morning pages again which I kept up (eventually switching to colored pens and doing all kinds of fun stuff with that) until very recently. When I started again it felt like I was getting the plumbing of my mind cleared out by doing so. I hope I go back to it, but currently I'm in a bit of a transitional stage of life and am giving myself permission to let go of some of my obligations - even obligations to myself. I found myself very empowered by your example of finding things to do at home, which also suits me better now. For this and many other reasons, I'm very grateful to you for sharing your process and look forward to the next installment (as well as your other videos!).

I had the artists way recommended to me like 10 years ago or so by my singing teacher - so idk can’t have been much older than 20. And back then I was so far from ready for it. It made me feel super inadequate for not being able to stick to it for even a day. A couple of years ago I then gave the back to a friend in a decluttering effort. But ever since you mentioned doing it, I’ve been meaning to ask for it back as it would actually really fit into my life rn and I think it might provide the kind of structure I’ve been looking for. So once my dog leaves my lap/ I can motivate myself to get up and reach for my phone I’ll hopefully remember to text said friend to bring the book along when we meet tomorrow 😅

Puzzles work briliantly together with podcasts / audiobooks, so if you want to build another, I highly recommend. Also, 500 are not a half of a time needed for a 1000, more like one fourth? So it may be easier to sneak in the schedule :)

There are guitars with 3/4 size and 7/8 size. Classic acoustic guitars have broad boards, but have nylon and silver wound nylon strings, softer to the touch. Western Style guitars have narrower boards, metal wound or clear strings that are shinier in sound, but harder to press down. Some bar chords have cheat variants, where you leave one or two strings unplayed. Maybe its helpful.

maybe it helps doing cooking more the american way? I noticed that most american recipes I use already list the ingredients as they are going to be used, potatoes diced etc meanwhile german recipes just list the ingredients as they are and within the cooking steps you are also preparing the ingredients. I noticed that can be more stressful when you already don't like cooking or feel like you aren't "good enough" at it jet. So preparing all your ingredients first and then following the recipe feels more like baking to me? It helped friends of mine who struggled with cooking I also recommend spice mixes at the beginning so you get to know what work with what. I feel like the more you do it it becomes easier and fun but yes there's a difference to baking still. I love the colder months for recipe that require me to just put everything in a dish and forget it in the oven for an hour such a blessed 😂

I'm currently on week 8! And have been for two weeks now... psh it's probably fine. Got a lot out of media deprivation -- felt like a cleanse more than anything else and helped me consume media more intentionally afterwards. My lamp was wallpapering the sitting room and I love it. Find Artist's Dates tricky, I forget them unless I book them in, but they are good for doing those 'I'll do them one day' activities. Been struggling lately though because I'm so motivated to WRITE stuff I feel like the course is asking me to slow down and do the course instead of writing. Excited for the next vlog on this!

So intertersting, I had the book recommended to me over a decade ago, got it immediately, gave it a try, was put off by the spirituality, and finally picked it up and finished it this year. And I've never heard anyone about it in the meantime and now it's popping up everywhere. And I did run into similar issues as you did. The reasons for accessibility were different, but the result was very similar. A lot of the time when I had finally thought of an artist date that could work for me it became a task later on and I'm like so that didn't count then? Plus, idk how well it has been updated, but I have a pretty old edition and boy it shows.

Hi Hannah! I also find steel strings to be too hard/sharp and have calluses to prove it. Classical guitars are played with nylon strings, which are so much softer and more forgiving. I highly recommend buying nylon strings for your guitar, especially if that may be the thing that gets you to play.

Not watched the whole video yet, but i agree, I struggled with the cringy “god” patter. It even came out in other ways of her thinking, which led to greater resistance for me. I also noticed there is quite a lot of reliance on material purchases, which may feel “small” to an American boomer, but her financial reality is so different from mine that that also bred some resentment. I love the idea but this book was not it for me. Keen to watch your creative awakening though!

Even as a writer I'm not sure if agree with the deprivation approach. If you're writing a very specific genre than yeah maybe don't read that for a while bit as a writer I feel when I'm reading more I'm more inspired and, yes you can be influenced, but provided you're not just trying to fully copy an influence or straight up plagiarising I don't think influence is bad. All artists have some form of creative influences, that's just how consuming art works.
