While in Dominican Republic I got my PADI Open Water Diver Certification! It was an educational experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. I can't wait to use what I've learned in the future to explore more of the underwater world.

Yay Taylor! Congratulations! I've been teaching scuba diving for over 25 years. I'll leave you my tips for new divers. #1, dive as much as humanely possible. There is nothing I can teach you to replace time underwater, so dive, dive, dive! #2, having said that, never do a dive you are not 100% comfortable doing just because other people are doing it. It's always OK to say no if you aren't comfortable. #3, follow all the safety procedures all the time like the pre-dive safety check, wearing a snorkel (unlike your instructor), etc., even though you will see a lot of people skipping these steps. #4, do a proper buoyancy check every time you get in the water with a difference piece of equipment (you looked way over-weighted your first time in the pool, but there is no way to know without doing a proper check). #5, actually practice the skills you learned in class from time to time in a safe environment like a pool or shallow spot. When the poo hits the fan and you need to do something, your instincts will kick in. If you haven't practiced something in a long time you might not be able to perform it when you need to. But most importantly, HAVE FUN and welcome to the underwater world!

One thing I think I could have learned better was to speak up and not be afraid to stop the group having a problem. I had a situation where group descend quickly I ended up with a barotrauma to my ear later led to Tinnitus (ringing in my ear) to this day I didn't stop my decent when I was having pain in the ear could not equalize the pressure. They say once the pain starts too late should stop your decent and ascend little until the pain goes away and can safely equalize the pressure.

That’s the way to do your training - I took my training in Edmonton, and my open water dive was in Lake Edith, a glacier-fed mountain lake, which was damned cold, even with a thick wetsuit, booties, hood, and gloves. My buddy and I shared one compass for the underwater navigation part of the training (we were starving students) and I couldn’t strap the compass onto his wrist when it was his turn. I yanked of my glove and did it, and by the time I finished, my hand was totally numb until I pulled the glove back on. The funniest part came when we surfaced; we’d entered the water just after dawn, and by the time everyone finished, families had arrived, and kids were splashing in the (cold) shallows. We swam until we were on our hands and knees and then everyone stood up at once. The people on shore hadn’t realized the implications of the dive flag in the water, and I guess it looked for a second like an attack by sea monsters - kids fled screaming, people on shore yelling until they realized what we were. Lol. Good times. LanceH. S/V Great Escape

number one rule diving, always use marker buoy attached to you and never ascend toward surface faster than your air bubbles. it will kill you or painfully cripple you for life! dive at 40 feet or less will be much nicer dives and can see full colors. drift diving in ocean with someone up in boat to track your marker buoy is an effortless blast and then u dont have to fight the currents to get back to boat! luv your new channel!

Back in 1976 when i got certified, we had a phase in training called under water harassment, it was about reacting to unexpected actions by instructor. Also,no decompressiontables were less conservative ( longer bottom times at specific tabulated depths), and the use of horse collar BC,s and the use of a wriswatch and wrist depth gauge. Fast forward to 2020 prefer Freediving, , be well !.

Congrats with you OW certificate. Hopefully the instructor told you that one of the diving rules is "enjoy the underwater-life by WATCHING, don't DISTURB animals and leave only bubbles". I was quite amazed to see someone "poke" the seahorse trying to get it to swim. As an example, I've seen a guy poking a Spanish Dancer with his snorkel during a night dive. When it finally got swimming, it was immediately eaten by a grouper. He was pretty sick of it. Anyway, happy diving!
