We’re out scouting a cover crop field of rye today. We don’t have much experience with cover crops, but if this works well we hope to do more! We’re prepping to plant the field and wanted to get out and scout it.
In this field, we planted a cover crop of rye last fall after harvesting soybeans. Then, we strip-tilled it with fertilizer to minimize soil disruption. There is an area of this field that is prone to washouts and we plan to seed a waterway where we’ve had issues in the past.
Crop rotation, minimal tillage, waterways, and cover crops are all practices we’re implementing to improve and preserve this field’s production for the future!

Hi KZfaq Fam! We’re the Sass family, 5th generation crop farmers in northern, Illinois. Hank, our 2-year old son pretty much runs the show day-to-day and every day is different. Josh farms with his two brothers and their dad. They all have different “specialties” on the farm, and I like to tag along to share our story. Depending on the time of year, we could be out in the field on the tractors or working around the farm preparing for what’s to come next. Join us in our day-to-day adventures on the farm!
