What a great lesson, never trust someone that pretends for a living, gonna try to remember that one. Wish I would actually had met someone that fought in WO I. It is sad how scares the people get that went trough WO II too, we could have learned so much of them and often I wonder how they would react on what's going on now. Also maybe I need to mark stuff more often as NGF. I'm getting really interested how your original USN knife looks! The story on it is just awesome. Great video! Thanks a lot!

Awesome video. As a framer I use empire ( USA made ) framing squares for layout. ( within a 1/16th accurate) I use starrett combo squares for marking stock and trim ( 4”-12”) very accurate. Combo squares are great for depth and margin marking. Most guys use “ speed squares” which are not for laying out stairs or rafters. In my shop I only use starrett and the best and most accurate squares I know of by “Woodpecker” very expensive and worth it.( American made) don’t know if you own any tools by them, I’m addicted . Your a serious collector or great tools, I can relate. Thank you for your service 👍🇺🇸 Great channel!!!!

My Grandfather left me his old hunting knife that turned out to be an old Army knife, similar to your Navy knife. Remington PAL 36. I always took good care of it because it was his but I also loved it because it was such a great knife! Parked in the hand like a champ and could do all the camp chores I put it to. I bought another one in e-bay years ago and had to restore it. Now Grampa's knife stays in a sealed ammo box and I use the one from e-bay. Thanks for sharing the story of your Grandad's knife.

Your videos on the ins and outs of tools are always useful. I'm learning alot. I'm going to check my squares just out of curiosity. By the way, your advice of using light oil on adjustable wrenches instead of grease is right on. I'm rescuing some flea market wrenches (some could use a visit to the Dake) that were greased. Grease gets dirty and dry and gums up the adjusting function. It can seize the mechanism. Light oil is better. At least grease helped control the rust. Thank you. You are a great teacher. Best from the 8ntermountain Wsst.

I got a plastic tri square and a plastic 4-foot level because I'm a plastic carpenter and found out that the square was a Swanson and it was a lite speed square. I also went to Lowes and got an aluminum framing square. This one I can even read but I just use it for straight cuts. So thanks John CS. I'd been proud to carry a Sea Bee's knife too. I'll just try and make Uncle Bill proud. Don't think I did doo bad of a job. Maybe.

I have a not-square combination square - somewhere. Cheap and no surprise not very good quality. I purchased a really nice looking square from Lee Valley, rosewood handle, brass rivets, thin steel blade. Gorgeous to look at. It is consistent - but not 90 deg between the handle and the blade. This now collects dust. I then purchased a made in Japan inexpensive square, aluminium handle, steel blade. Also consistent but not 90 deg between handle and blade. I finally purchased a 90 deg and separately a 45 deg DIN rated squares from Grizzly. These are very good quality and accuracy. These are now my go-to squares. I wanted a shorter 90 deg square and made the mistake of purchasing a set of 3 squares also from Grizzly similar to your Indian set. Mine were made in China, inexpensive and no surprise each one was consistent, but a different angle other than 90 deg. I gave these away to a turner at the local club. I bit the bullet and purchased a 3in long 90 deg square. This was almost as much as the 3 piece set, but this one it decent quality and accuracy - finally. When I started doing metal work I purchased my first set of 1-2-3 blocks. As you said, these are so useful. I wish I had known about these decades ago. Dave.

Most combination (or adjustable) Squares are only in the "Ballpark" accurate. I find Starrett and Brown & Sharpe to be the best of that type. IMHO if one is TRULY interested in the best accuracy, go on to ebay and buy a gently used fixed Starrett Square - not an adjustable one). They are very reasonably priced, as accurate as you will find and will last a lifetime if not abused. IMHO the squares sold in stores today are not worth buying. That said, for most Carpentry work, super accuracy is not really needed as it is in Machining. I have my Dad's WW2 Navy knife in the original gray colored hard sheath with a canvas retainer and a snap. They are really cool and super sharp!

You can true them up with a surface plate and a reference. We calibrated all the Tool Room equipment every 6 months. Checked them against a master and I had one of the toolmakers, usually the one who screwed up, 😆 dress the edges and true them up. Two goals accomplished. The toolmakers would police the tools so they didn't get stuck with the grunt job. The tools were certified so the auditors never dinged us.

@@ScoutCrafter Politics and sanity are two words which don't fit together in one sentence, except in form of a negation. Only the level of insanity is changing. For example: The authorities of the state of Berlin (Berlin is a city state, like DC is). Last week they actually reported to the media that US authorities rerouted 200,000 protective masks made by 3M in China, ordered and already paid by the state police of Berlin. They actually talked about an act of modern piracy (!sic!) by the US government. They would at least get their money back from 3M. Then the 3M company told that there was no order by the berlin police. And then it came out they had ordered elsewhere and getting the protective masks soon. THIS is insanity in its pure form...

Somewhere I've got a Colonial sheath knife that was for Boy Scouts in the 1960s. Newer info on the virus says that it can travel 20 feet and live for 17 days in some cases. As an after thought, if you ever heard Burt Reynolds rant about the worst place he ever ate, it was the Parkway Restaurant in Sylva, NC. I was hauling concrete and one of the DOT Inspectors was the son of the manager of that place when that mess came to pass. Reynolds was filming Deliverance or some such and him and his entourage stopped in there for lunch/dinner. With great puffing , blowing and grandeur they all blew in and proceeded to take over but one thing mr. Burt didn't realize that Jackson was a dry county. NO BOOZE so the manager put him on the road. Put him/them OUT! That's why he said what he said. Typical twerp. I got no use for ANY of them. That was straight from the managers son's mouth.

Lewie- The funny thing is that when a celebrity is at their peak they start to actually believe the hype, it's human nature, however when the public is done with them they can't understand it. That's why they have such drastic lives after their career is finished. The only ones that avoid that is the ones that never took themselves serious and had other interests... =D

@@ScoutCrafter I hauled a good bit on that job, pouring headwalls on culverts and the son did all the inspecting. We talked a good bit about that and I told him a BUNCH to pat Dad on the back for what he did. Folks need to be in the REAL world some. And I always said I needed to get good and broke to realize just how cheap I COULD live if I had to. I always made WAY below the national poverty level but never lacked. Had HELP! Still have the same HELP! GBWYou, Buddy!

I usually use a combination square. I have a rafter square of course and recently bought a speed square which I really like and have begun to use. Scout you got me thinking, I'm going to check all my squares to make sure thy are all still legit.
