I started as a substitute teacher this month and it already is soooo overwhelming, so this is very helpful, thank you! Edit: Do you have tips how to keep your students quiet and their attention span up? Maybe how not to have them walk over you without being this overly strict and authorial teacher? :)

I'm really glad that this video was helpful! Subbing is no joke! Per your question, that is a difficult question for most teachers, but especially with substitute teaching, since you don't have the same amount of time to build relationships with students. That being said, if the activity allows for this, my students responded very well when I played instrumental jazz/cafe music in the background during independent work time, so that could improve the overall mood/tone.

You seem to be all about classroom layout. My advice to any new teacher(as this appears to be this channel’s target audience) as a veteran middle school math teacher, none of what she is talking about matters. All you have to do is talk to your students, and know your content. The rest is irrelevant

Hi Cameron, We agree that what is most important is communicating with your students and teaching one's content, and we have a lot of other videos on this channel that can help social studies teachers with content. That being said, if you click on a video that is a classroom tour or about setting up one's classroom, it will obviously be about classroom set-up or showing parts of the classroom. It might be irrelevant to you, and that's fine, but that's not the case for everyone. Have a nice day.

Actually, you're absolutely wrong. As ANOTHER veteran teacher (20 years) the little things DO matter. A lot. You can know your content and talk to your students and still be a hot mess. I wonder why you would leave a negative comment on a video that is clearly sincere and trying to help new teachers.
