Getting Started In Renoise: Part 1 - Loops, Hits, Automation and FX

An introduction on how to use Renoise and getting used to how it works.
In part 1 I talk you through loading loops, playing samples backwards and playing from a particular start point. I then go over counting in hexadecimal, then add some one shot bass and kick samples. Finally, I add some FX and automation.
Here's a handy Effects sheet which will be useful in discovering more: files.renoise.com/manual/Reno...

Good intro. If I wasn't already a week into screwing around quite a bit inside of Renoise, I may have been rather lost! What I got most out of this video were the Note Adds/Sub and the FX Adds/Sub. That makes much more sense in the Edit Menu. And also getting a better idea of how to trigger parts of the loop with the Sxx FX commands. I can see why Glitch and IDM and Breakcore love Renoise so much.

That's really interesting to watch, thanks a lot! The Polyend Tracker was and is my first experience with trackers. Although I absolutely love it, it's fascinating to see how Renoise eliminates a huge amount of limitations there are on the PE Tracker. Like free choice of the number of tracks (as opposed to a maximum of 8 on the PE Tracker), number of FX columns (maximum of 2 on the Tracker) etc. It's also kind of inspiring to find workarounds on the PE Tracker to overcome its limitations, like condensing multiple tracks into a single track by converting them to a sample for instance. And at the end, you might not even miss a feature when you haven't seen it somewhere else (so I should probably stop watching Renoise tutorials :D ). Anyways, very interesting to see!

Thanks! Looking at picking up Redux to use in Bitwig. Since there are only a couple of videos on it, it's easier to search for Renoise. Really wanting to get into chopping breaks and this looks quick and fun. I love old school jungle/dnb breaks so this might be the perfect fit for me. I really don't like programming drums on a piano roll at all. I know I should focus more on it because I'm really weak at that but honestly I'm more interested in synth sound design. Or maybe I should get Renoise build drum and simple melody and load wav into Bitwig and go from there.... I guess I'll be buying both Redux and Renoise. haha.

At 2:48 the video talks about using the Beatsync T buttton to sync things. The video show the Finetune value changing to 120, whereas mine changes to 47. I don’t know how important this is but I’m keen to find out why this difference is occurring! That said, the rest of the video is brilliant, and the way that such a simple change at 10:10 gives such a glorious sound is truly mind-blowing 😍
@midierror

The beatsync is changing the pitch of the sample to fit the tempo of the track - it will change depending on the length of the sample youre using and the tempo of the track. Glad to know it helped! Perhaps one day part 3 will materialise !

question.. I'm inputing "S010" in the fx trigger just the same as you are and it says "S010" where it should but it's still triggering back at the start of the sample, and I AM in record mode. Any thoughts as to why? It's also not blue for whatever that's worth. just got Renoise yesterday so I'm early on in the learning curve. Thanks!

You are a great teacher midierror! I am about to pull the plug and buy Renoise, it's a very fun DAW to work with. I got a question, maybe you can help out. Lets say you make a reversed cymbal and you want it to snap into the next pattern. Is there any way I can achieve this without resorting to eyeballing where I put the cymbal in the pattern, so it can drop exactly on a beat?
@midierror
@midierror 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ivan, thats so kind of you! Let me have a look and get back to you
@MrZensphere
@MrZensphere 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's super easy. When you're editing the reverse cymbal in the sample editor, reverse the sample so it's playing forward, set the snap to beats, select however many beats you want (presumably some multiple of four that gets you close to the end of the cymbal tail), and chop it using command T (on mac at least). Then reverse it back, do a little fade in if you need to, and drop it on your track, knowing now exactly how many beats long the sample is.

Three things. First - why in left side of screen, there is small sample window? For what? Second - is it possible to have a grid lines in sample window, like we have it in Keyzones section? Third - (06:27) I have two patterns - 0. 1., with some notes. How to create empty pattern above 0. pattern?
