For those of you asking about brands of gouche to buy, 1st thing is you must think about is your needs. If you plan on making paintings to sell or display, DONT BUY DESIGNER GOUCHE because most of the colors will not be lightfast. Now if you need them to design or paint to scan... the designer GOUCHE is for you. Iam a full time professional artist and Bookbinder and strictly stick with 3 gouche brands..Schmincke, Holbein and M. GRAHAM I do absolutely love how the Winsor and Newton designer gouche performs, but they are mostly not lightfast. They do have lightfast colors and I bought some of those to use, but I test all my supplies that I use for sold art. They didn't do well at all ( the " lighfast" colors ) it's just the makeup of how designer gouche is made and designed to work... to create and scan, to create for mock ups and.... well designing. Have a good day everyone 😊

This is a great point - and something that is less commonly talked about with gouache within the industry. Do you have your test results posted somewhere like a blog or video?

@danieljamesbinderystu2968

@@nattyw495 the short explanation of this is..... anything that is sold and labeled as Designers gouache usually isn't lightfast because it is made for people in the design industry that only need to copy and scan their artwork, they don't need to worry about any lightfast supplies at all ( except the ink they use to print their work out ) artists gouache is considered fine artist gouache and is meant to use for paintings to sell or hang on a wall to display, it will be sold and labeled as " Artist/ Artists gouache and is very lightfast. Hope that helps lol and have a great day

Your comment about W&N designers gouache puzzles me. I checked the lightfast ratings of all the W&N designers gouache I have..All have an excellent lightfast rating except for one which is rated as good, so none are in fact fugitive...so I would be interested in seeing your test results disputing their ratings. Do you have them shown anywhere on the internet???

@@kazfarndon4990 sir, iam a full time professional artist and Bookbinder. I have my own line of handmade goatskin leather sketchbooks, with options of all the top brands of 100% cotton paper...Arches, Saunders Waterford, Fabriano Artistico. I also make my own hand marbled papers for my endpapers for the watercolor sketchbooks. I am all local buisness for now and I also teach private art lessons... and bookbinding lessons. Iam not an art youtuber, but also make alittle money of the side with helping out some people with products, because Iam friends with MANY in the industry. I test all my supplies that I use in any artwork that goes to the gallery, and I don't have time to do all that I just said, and post stuff for you personally. Do your own work if you wish to know or don't believe me.... everyone these days, wants instant gratification, information and for someone else to do the work. Its 3:47am and I am still in my studio working on a painting for a customer. I take a break to see this comment... Winsor and newton have recently reformulated ALOT of their designer gouche colors to be more lightfast, to compete with the lightfast artists gouche brands. But even doing so, the still have bugs in their formulations.... look at many of their tubes and most will only have their house performance rating of AA, A or B. This means they weren't tested using the Bluetooth or Astm. Winsor and newton are known in the industry for copy and pastiing pigment lightfast ratings from their other paints like oil... and applying that to an untested new formula. Tons of companies do this and even brands like Caran D'ache Luminance that are supposed to be all lightfast colored pencils.... I've had some colors fade in a personal test. This happens with every brand, that's why I test all my supplies. Do it yourself, it's extremely easy... paint 2 seperate swatches, put 1 in a draw and 1 in a window facing the sun with the most light. Let sit for 3 months and check from time to time. Compare the 2 matching swatches at the end and you have your answers. I use uv lights indoors, because I already had them in my studio.... but the sun works just as good, it just takes longer. Just because a brand says it's lightfast, doesn't mean you trust it from their word 100%, and that goes for any brand! Daniel smith says Moonglow, shadow violet, Mayan blue etc etc... are lightfast, AND THEY AREN'T. Lol that's a trusted brand ( well until lately) iam sorry if you are a Winsor and newton fanboy and I hurt your feelings... but Winsor and Newton have ridden their name alone for so many years... and now they are behind most companies that continuously evolve and think bigger and better. Now they are scrambling to play catch up and shorts are a norm. I have to get to bed now, so I hope you take my advice on not taking every word a company prints on a tube as 100% true... and that you have a great day

genuinely love how you have an agenda for your stream. a lot of streamers should take note! another tip for keeping the paint moist i learned from warhammer: make a kitchen towel (but not soaking), and then put a piece of baking paper on top. put the paint on the baking paper. it keeps the paint moist but still seperate and easy to clean up.

Same.I make little cards with the brand, color name, and pigments it has and I make a black line with a waterproof marker to test opacity and then make a swatch. With transparent mediums like watercolor I make a gradient and then a layering swatch. With more opaque mediums I make a saturated swatch and then a mixed with white swatch. I just love it so much. And it comes in handy when choosing colors and organizing palettes as well

I would recommend cold red (magenta/pink), cold yellow (the lemon one) and warm blue (bright sky blue) as base pallete because they can create red, orange, amazing greens and okay purples, for amazing violets you also need cold blue like ultramarine.

I watched this a few months ago because I finally got started with traditional art in my life, after nearly 20 years of doing digital art (I mostly did it with a mouse in photoshop, scanning my sketches lol). After I completed doing graphite sketches and charcoal studies, I got into the main event which was painting and I got the hang of it pretty quick thanks to you. I used to paint in acrylic a few years ago for craft projects, but I LOVE gouache now for fine art. It's my favorite I love how it reactivates in water, makes it so forgiving. Thank you so much for your videos!

When I didn't have much money for painting supplies I would put a wet paper towel under a piece of wax paper. I'd set it up in a cheap crayon box, it would last for maybe half a day to a full day. I used it for acrylics.

I loved this. Your artwork is beautiful. I'm so happy to see bright colors in gouache. That's what turned me off when I was young: everything looked dull and serious. You (and the artists you showed) breathe life into the paint. BTW, I took a break to cook. Was mixing BBQ sauce and all I could think about was the texture of gouache! The first thing I'm going to do is make lots of color swatches and test, test, test. I thought that was boring, but now it looks like fun. Thanks very much for all of this. :)

I'm very confused about something you said, and want to clarify something else. Thank you for the video, it was very informative. 1) you said that if you let gouache get dry and crumbly and re-wet it, it can never be opaque any more because you've diluted it. How is that possible? When it dries, it loses moisture. When it is wetted, it regains moisture. In theory you should be able to figure out (e.g., by weight) the right amount of water to add to get it back to its original state. Am I missing something? I'd be interested to see if anyone has tested this with different brands. 2) honey may be "antimicrobial," but that only means it retards the growth of pathogens -- it doesn't outright prevent it. If there are enough pathogens, they can take over. The main reasons a paint might get moldy are contamination and adulteration. The honey may not be real honey. The pasteurization process may affect its antimicrobial properties. Some pigments marked as "cosmetic grade" or "food grade" are contaminated during processing and/or shipment, after their purity was tested. At the end of the day, established brands with good quality control should not mold, but it's definitely possible. Thanks again!
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 2 жыл бұрын
1. When using gouache, you introduce a bit of water in micro amounts over and over. Over time the ratio of water to pigment/binder gets thrown off, and by the time the gouache dries out/gets crumbly, you have less binder. When reactivating, people only add water, which lowers the ratio of binder even more, and the pigment is not dispersed nor adhered properly. Some brands, like Winsor and Newton, get rock hard when they are at the crumble stage, and damn near impossible to reactive like "normal." It acts more like watercolor at that point, but sometimes stays chunky. You'd have to grind the dry pigment, add appropriate ratio of binder/water to make them come back to life completely. My schmincke gouache stays moist longer therefore I need less water to reactive it if it gets a little dry. 2. Yes. And M. Graham is a very popular brand, very high quality, yet multiple people have reported it gets moldy faster than any other brand, unfortunately. You have to experiment with different brands to find what suits your needs.

I have it in my watercolours, but not in my gouche collection as yet..mind you if you don't mind a bit of transparency, you can always mix the watercolour with some white gouche for opacity in the first layer, then glaze with the watercolour at full strength afterwards....haven't got far enough into the video to see if this is something you talk about..ADHD means I would have forgotten about the Cobalt Turquoise in five mins..lol

Colour swatches are like scales in music...at first you don't want to do them and find them tricky, but with practice, you soon build up muscle memory, knowledge and pattern recognition. Practice your colour swatches and you will soon be able to mix any colour from the paint you have to hand ( as long as you have the primaries) in no time at all and with accuracy. On top of that you will warm up your creative muscles at the same time as your physical ones...and you never know where that will lead you. Great Video with loads of great advice...wish I had had something like this when I was starting out ❤

I just introduced you to my son and daughter. I would love them to learn this as a hobby. You are a wonderful artist and art teacher. I am learning gouache so I can work smaller. May I ask the dimensions of the journal you paint landscapes in. Do you prefer Washi tape around the edges? So happy watching this tutorial. Its true to say painting in like learning to drive a manual car for me... I quit too early. Also... I had an ah ha moment watching this when you were layering colours on top or gradients.. I thought ohhhh I wonder if Mark Rothko did his Abstract Expressionism paints in Gouache. Now if you could help me find the right painting journal as you used or showed you sketchbooks... perhaps I might gain some traction and not be a quitter. I want to realise painting CAN be achievable. Thank you so much.

I always use watercolor and gouache together, I rarely use gouache alone cause it’s so opaque it makes me nervous. I am a horrible painter but have many years of drawing under my belt so i usually ink first then paint but the gouache covers my lines and I get so nervous I’ll mess up without my ink. I want desperately to learn these more painterly styles but it has been a huge struggle.

Did you talk about gouache cracking when painted too thickly? I just started with gouache, but have heard about this. Thank you for this comprehensive intro to the medium. I have been itching to try it.
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio Жыл бұрын
That is possible but rare, it would only happen if you paint REALLY thick which is not typically how it’s used. You wouldn’t want it to build up on the surface of the paper like acrylic for instance. But once you start painting with it you will start to get a feel for it.

I bought Arteza and it lifts. You can't paint over it without picking up the color under it. Now I don't know if what I have is Acrylic Gouache--I think that would fix it though to have acrylic. There are a ton of colors with Arteza and you can get a huge kit so it is fun to play that way.

45:42 oh my gosh this is EXACTLY what I am struggling with right now!!! I've been doing color studies of Nathan Fowkes and losing my mind over my sky blues. I snappped that cobalt turquoise blue into my cart so fast! I've started out recently with gouache coming from digital art and the constraints on saturation are frustrating me like nothing else! 😤 I want to snatch all those munsell max chroma colors eventually, but I'm not sure which ones to start with. Any chance you could recommend some other colors that you feel have helped rid you of muddiness in more vibrant paintings and made that "wow" kind of difference?
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 2 жыл бұрын
Ahh I understand. Of all the paint, gouache is one of the MOST vibrant types of paint though, it’s practically pure pigment and since it dries matte there’s no reflection to distract. My AH-ha colors are lemon yellow, permanent alizarin crimson and Prussian blue. These are my favorite primaries and are so versatile! They create such strong mixes. Add white, black, and burnt umber to the palette for a huge variety of beautiful neutrals.
@inconspicuous-nobody

@@SarahBurnsStudio Thanks! I think I've got a very close equivalent to all of those luckily :)) Talens Prussian blue (pthalo), Carmine, and Lemon Yellow. @SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 2 жыл бұрын
Lightfastness is only important for 2 scenarios: 1. Selling originals 2. If you hope it will be in a museum someday I mainly use gouache for sketching or my own stuff that might later become a print. I scan/photograph artwork when it's fresh and make digital copies for prints. If you plan on selling originals do extensive research on lightfast pigments.

Hi Sarah, thank you for this awesome information. I have a tube of very old watercolour that I'm thinking of trying to regrind and revive and was wondering what kind of binder would I use for that? I think its cotton or W&N. Also what's the best binder/rewetting agent for gouache?? I guess honey would work but I live in the sub tropics..I fear it might get mouldy?
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio Жыл бұрын
To make gouache from old watercolor you’d have to use a binder like gum Arabic plus a whiting/filler agent. Otherwise it would just be watercolor. One of the reasons gouache is different is because the pigment particles are larger than watercolor, and used in higher concentrations

Sarah, when I first explored gouache, I took Nathan's class, bought the book and was confused b/c he used white gouache with watercolors, not tube gouache. Am I remembering that correctly? I thought that would be a great way to go b/c I'm a watercolorist. I did do some pieces I loved and since I didn't have tubes of the colors I wanted, I used thick wc with gouache. I found it a tough medium, want to try again, but I fell back into wc. The point of this is do you ever use just wc and gouache?

Lightfastness is over rated. It takes a long time before anything fades. I have cp work that’s 30 years old and there’s no fading. They also gave UV protection in the sealers and varnishes now. So I agree with the person who made the comment about lightfastness us over rated. What did all artists do before lightfastness. And DaVinci’s work us still going strong.
