The InSpire.ag team is excited to announce the return of our in-depth webinar series designed specifically for cannabis cultivators. It is easy to lose track of the fundamentals along the way with new data constantly emerging and the latest cannabis cultivation trends always shifting.
In this webinar, we’d like to take a step back and focus on the meaning of a phenotype and why it is a foundation to the success of your indoor cannabis cultivation business.
With new data constantly emerging and the latest cannabis cultivation trends always changing, cultivators can often forget the basic fundamentals along the way. In this webinar, we’ll take a step back and focus on the meaning of a phenotype in cannabis and why it is a foundation to the success of your indoor cannabis cultivation business.
Everything from color, size, and smell can be affected by your cultivation environment and therefore impact the phenotypic expression of your end product. Phenotypic expression can drive facility design, influence your cultivation practices and will serve as the backbone of your company’s financial performance.
“Getting The Most Out of Your Cannabis Phenotype” is hosted by Jesse Porter and Anders Peterson, two of InSpire’s resident cultivation professionals. Jesse and Anders will cover a variety of topics including:
• The definition of a phenotype as it relates to cannabis cultivation
• The factors that influence a phenotype and phenotypic expression
• The impact of facility design and equipment selection on phenotypic expression when it comes to cannabis climate control and environmental crop steering
• The financial advantages and brand recognition that optimal phenotypic expression can provide for cultivators and owners in the cannabis marketplace
There will be a live question and answer period at the end of the webinar where guests may submit questions to be answered by Jesse and Anders. Mark your calendar and register today!
It’s been a moment since our last webinar, so feel free to review some of the previous topics we’ve covered in this series:
• The Ten Cardinal Parameters of Plant Health and Vitality
• Drying and Curing Cannabis to Preserve Terpenes and Other Secondary Metabolites
• How to Compare Integrated HVACD With Non-Integrated HVAC
• From Cultural to Chemical Control: How to Implement an IPM Plan for Cannabis

Great show, thank you! My simple opinion, if I may is: All this terp, color, aromas, bag appeal, taste hype is good for the recreational user. The effect is so neglected these days and as a medical patient, all I care is the effect, not to mention the enjoyability of these effects regarding extreme pain, mood and all around wellness. Ask yourself: Would you rather smoke the best tasting, bag appeal, aroma buds if it gave you paranoia or a feeling of a sledgehammer on your head effect, with a bad comedown? Or, a bad tasting, awfull looking bud that gives you a blissfull , almost surreal wellness effect? Most will say, best of both worlds of course, but in these days and time, that's called utopia! As Tommy Chong said recently in a well known podcast about how strong cannabis has become since the 60's-70's, and I quote: It's the same plant, we've just fucked it up for money purposes! I remember how you could tell exactly what you were smoking by the effect you got. Colombian Gold, Jamaican, Hawaiian, Afghani, Panama Red, etc... I have not found any to come close except 4 or 5, among the 735+ different strains that I keep a log on, that I have smoked. I did many tests at wine tasting events, many years ago (I don't drink anymore) and loved a 45$ bottle over 600$ bottles... Probably I don't try to over complicate things and not a snobby afficionado like the wine world has become. Different strains, for different brains is so true. Just my 2 cents! Cheers

Great stream👍, i agree with all that was said except for yield per sqaure feet or meter. That is all about the light spectrum and intensity. From a single 600w hps lamp most strains will give 400 gr and over (not all ofcourse). A 600w light is used to light a squared meter or 2 . something feet (6 or 8? Im dutch we use meters, 3 sqaured feet is 1.2m or 120cm sqaured). When you get more than 500 gram of an average performing strain from a 600w light bulb, you are a good grower yield wise.

I been smoking for over 30 years but not in a place where there is a lot of growers. Weed has been medical here for over 10 years & yet the best 5 strains I have ever smoked came from a local grower?? Why is dispensary weed not better than blueberry I got 20 years ago?
@WilliamTheBot
@WilliamTheBot 2 жыл бұрын
Most dispensary weed is weed that’s commercially produced there is no love put in its machine trimmed, harvested before it has a chance to reach its fullest potential. I don’t know. Weed growing has been a hobby product for decades now big weed is coming in and crushing some of the best growers in the world. I don’t smoke weed but I would rather support a local grower rather than a “Walmart” grower/producer.

33:50 but how do you want to classify cultivars according to terpene profiles, if some of the most important substances like thiols can't be analysed with normal methods and even small changes in the amount of those thiols, esters, etc. can change how the whole terpene profile will affect you? Just think about the difference of pure terpene blends based on the available analysis and how the flower smells, all those funky cheesy catty etc. flavours are missing and I'd say they have equal or more impact than the terpenes on how the flower smells and feels like.

I had a buddy about 10 years who had grew 2 strains, Black Dominican and L.A. Confidential. The L.A. Confidential he wouldn't share a clone with anyone. Was very flavorful. One of the first time I smoked it b4 I knew the guy, a buddy bought 2 oz and he was bagging up Into dimes as I walked Into his room and immediately Said "Ugh! Bro did you get a cat? It smells like straight cat piss in here" and he says yo that's just the bud and I see like a half Oz out on newspaper. If you pulled on an unlit joint clip it was like rancid piss, but as soon as it was lit it tasted amazing. I think a search through DNA genetics L.A. confidential may yield a cat piss phenotype. I've also had other DNA La conf. That was 100% the DNA with a very similar structure, color, and flavor as the pissy LA but it didn't have the outrageous pissyness in smell. Might be somewhere to look for the piss cause this stuff was exactly like James Loud describes.

people should be aloud to grow there own in and outdoor people who cant afford power costs can just do poly house / outdoor plants just like fruits and veggies then if you want a higher grade or medical you can have the option to go source it from them but no one in the world should be forced or controlled to go one way only
@Kruizzer
@Kruizzer 2 жыл бұрын
Not at all. The issue is being able to control your environment for the home grower. Not all home growers have the money or situation to be able to have a climate controlled facility/ room. It may take us much longer to find a specific pheno or strain that does well in our environment and produces the right amount of thc and terpenes to satisfy our desired effect. Plus we would usually want a few different profiles for our day to day consumption. It’s a long but fun process.
@thetruthmanification
@thetruthmanification 2 жыл бұрын
Part of the problem is that some people believe that unless the flower is esthetically pleasing that it isn't medical grade. Unless you have a environmentally controlled space for not only the grow but the dry and curing area you are never going to be able to produce the same level of quality that is able to be grown in a professional setting. The point being as long as the genetics are solid along with the right fundamentals of the grow, will still produce solid quality product. It's only been the last 30 years that anyone could have all the bells and whistles when cultivating cannabis. I would personally be more concerned with homogenized cannabis that quality is solely determined by thc numerics. Some of the best cannabis in the world only tests in the mid teens. Which most newer consumers would say "that's mids not top shelf." Then they smoke it and are stupid high. Genetics matter was the main point of the presentation. Along with the hunt is sometimes better than the catch.
@erdbeerzwiebel3404
@erdbeerzwiebel3404 2 жыл бұрын
He even says in the beginning that it's about indoor businesses, not private cultivation. Your comment is completely unnecessary. Even private growers are interested in pheno hunting to keep a good mother plant for clone grows. If you don't care what you smoke then fine but why criticize business models and technique to improve what you produce!? Just smoke your bud but don't moan around when others want to improve their methods..

They are: carbon (C), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), sulfur (S), cal- cium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), boron (B), chlorine (Cl), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn). Doing all this work only to have people trim with machines and tumblers.... There's a reason the legal market cannot compare to the traditional market. You gotta care, Growers in charge of multimillion dollar operations and they've never even had to feed themselves with their garden. Producing product so similar at a scale they want is impossible with something like cannabis much like it's impossible to produce the same tobacco in the hills of Appalachia mountains that's produced in Turkey. Same reason Parmesan cheese is only produced in one place on the planet, Enzymes. It's all going to be good in it's own way but we're not going to be able to make this as universal as they want it to be. Good thing is tho that we'll have special places that will produce the best, places that produce the most and so on. Variety is king.

What I’ve always thought when you know you have solid seeds all the phenos will be close to eachother? It sounds like that’s what your saying aswel? Recently I heard a breeder say you’ll find a huge variation in his pack even both indica and sativa, when I heard this I was shocked so is that good like he says? He seeds are very pricey Great talk guys
@jackkushner8026
@jackkushner8026 2 жыл бұрын
The answer to both your questions is it depends. If you are buying a pack of seeds from a breeder and you desire and reason for purchasing the pack is that you want to grow plants that are going to look as close to the picture as possible and especially when feminized, want all the seeds in the pack to look a=and with as little as possible variation between them then you will likely be looking to buy from an experienced breeder who has worked the line of tht plaant likely for many generationa over years. Although theres no exact number of generations to go from say an F1 cross to a generation where the seeds produced are going to have that stability and have the highest percentage of similar plants produced you have to make selections from a large number ofoffspring produced either by line breedig where you take a male and female frome ach generationa and cross them to make the nxt generation, each time selecting the 2 plants that best express the phenotipical expressions that you are looking to produce with each generation, as you get rid of unwanted specimens you narrow down the gene pool (which we have sadly done with cannabis in general by always breeding for high thc costing us countless genetic variations we cant ever access again no matter how much we try to go back into the code of a plant) but you do thise more and more until finally your left with seeds that only have the genetic information that you have narrowed down to and thereby and only grow that genotypical expression of the plant and there is little to not other phenotypes because theres no other genetic information left to create a variation. You can still have the enviroment cause some variation but if you are growing them all in one place, same light then they should all look the same or very close to it. So likely the person who did all that work is going to want to make a little more money off those seeds than the person who just crosses a bunch of strains from other breeders and sells the f1s. It is also important for the gene pool ,and this is kind of off topic but important to not continue making the same mistakes we did in the past not knowing better, in order to ensure that we aren't further narrowing the gene pool its important to keep some of the seeds or plants from where you started your process of narowing down the variation thereby preserving all the genetic information of those cultivars you started with because you can only narrow down, not expand back out. Now to your second question, it also depends.. If you are buying say seeds from the f2 generation meaning you crossed 2 plants and then breed 1 of those offspring with one of its siblings , you are basically opening up the genetic code of the 2 plants you originally crossed so if the 2 parents that were originally used to make a certain hybrid where really awesome or rare but you cant buy either of those parents, then you have a chance of growing them by getting a bunch of the f2 seeds and hoping that one of the plants that comes out of growing them close to or fully expresses the genetic code of that original crosses parent plant. SO if someone crosses a sativa with an indica and you get those f2 seeds then yes, you will have a variety of sativas and indicias and crosses of both being produced by that same pack of seeds. Can someone charge alot for that ? Well, it depends... That Help ?
