Nice thing about an old 4 row plate planter, only takes a few hours to get all the maintenance done on it.

Did you ever notice, a plate planter plant's just as good as an air/plate less planter does. A Monitor would be nice, but you know it's planting unless something really goes wrong with the drive unit on the row. Our JD 495A has Monitor rods through the seed covers that go down as seed is used up, pretty simple if you ask me! Plus you are right we paid $200.00 for our 459A 40 years ago & it still plants just as good as the day we first used it. Old Engineering works every time! As long as parts are still a round run them till you can't!!!

One of the things I really enjoy about your channel is the older equipment. That is all I have ever been around. We always bought our equipment used in their “ work clothes “ as you would say. I am a firm believer that they don’t make things like they used to!! Seems like all the new stuff they make today Id made of throw away parts. I like shit that last just like the equipment you run. And I can guarantee none of the arm chair frames that make negative comments could even spell planter when they were 16 years old!. Good for you, keep doing what you do and I’ll keep watching you do it!. Thanks for the videos

I just found your channel, love the videos! I actually have a 540 myself that I use on my 6 acres, rebuilt it from the ground up 4 years ago, it does a great job! On that note, would you have a seed box and fertilizer lid you would consider parting with? I've got one seed box that cracked up bad, and I'm missing a fertilizer lid. I'm just north of you a bit, I'm on the south side of Holland
@Oliver66FarmBoy4 жыл бұрын
All my spare parts are going on an 8 row eventually. AGCO has box lids still available although they are black so they will need painted. The boxes can be fixed with fiberglass glazing compound.

Last I checked the goal in farming is make the most amount of profit with the least amount invested. I see nothing wrong at all with your planter! I envy anyone who manages there money! A new white planter I doubt will make you any more money per acre and if it did you still have the high dollar planter to pay for. Glad your back! :)

The oliver 540 was the best thought out planter around in the late 60’s. Fiberglass boxes, disk openers, and gauge wheels, all considered in the design. But I hear that a Deere 494a still plants corn more accurately.
@Oliver66FarmBoy4 жыл бұрын
Thing about the Deere’s is they were rust magnets and high maintenance because they kept using steel boxes. Had to spend a lot of time cleaning and oiling them or they were junk in a couple years.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but, my grand dad used to have a 1/2" punch with a hollow grind. He'd used that in those hard to reach area's for rivets. Couldn't you do the same? Here's the thing that many fail to understand with old equipment vs new... it's works far better than that of the new stuff. Today's equipment, needs all that fancy computers and touch screens to work. The "REAL" equipment, just needs an operator on the tractor that knows what they're doing. Don't let the idiots get to ya, they just want attention from you. That or completely jealous that your equipment still functions and theirs don't. Can't wait to see the planter planting, grew up with this stuff, just brings back good memories. Great video, cheers :)

@Oliver66FarmBoy4 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t have remotes. And there isn’t enough room behind the coulter for bolt heads. You have to get the rivets damn near flat for those to clear.

Farm with what you like. Don't matter what others think. If you can make it work more power to you. We don't use "chain oil" any more. We have switched to a dry chain and cable lubricant(moly type?). We use John Deere but you could probably find a similar product elsewhere if you like. It doesn't gum with dust and it seems like the chains stay happy. And we've stopped buying Agco bearings because of the chinese bearings you can get the same bearing most of the time in a Timkin or SKF if you go to a bearing speciality shop. Don't care what you do, just food for thought.
@Oliver66FarmBoy4 жыл бұрын
I don’t use oil either. It’s actually delayed viscosity aerosol grease that goes on fluid then gets tacky. Have had good luck with it. The only bearings I’ve got from AGCO that are China are the small run of the mill ones like these coulter bearings that are made thousands at a time. They probably buy them from the same company that Deere and everybody else is buying them from. Most of the higher dollar bearings are Japan or USA made.
@ghenry854 жыл бұрын
@@Oliver66FarmBoy Sounds similar to the lube we use. We had to change the pto shaft bearing on the Massey. The agco bearing was from china so we cross referenced it and got a SKF. The same thing a last year with the disk gang bearing(white 254), the bearing we were going to get from agco was a Chinese bearing, so we ordered the Timkin equivalent from a bearing speciality shop. Maybe we just got unlucky twice, dunno.
