Just a friendly tip: Hello Everyone watching this video. When filling up your gas, after the pump turns off, DO NOT TOP OFF YOUR TANKS! There is a vapor line that will fill up with the over flow of gas and cause big problems! 1 the tank will no longer fill up 2 your gauge will not be correctly reading gas levels. 3 It will cost you money to get lines cleared and you might ruin your vapor reservoir tank…””Expensive to replace.” I speak from experience. Oh and it’s not covered, as it not a defective issue… other then that, I LOVE MY RAV4 2021 XSE Prime!

It's kind of ridiculous that Toyota was too cheap to include illuminated door switches, full pwr seat adjustment for passenger, better quality cameras, etc in a $49,000 vehicle. A lot of the details in XSE Premium are simply not up to the level they should be in such a costly vehicle. That said, I'm still planning to purchase one later this year simply because it's the only plug-in hybrid available in the US that has decent EV range, a decent feature set, and Toyota reliability. It's definitely too expensive, especially the premium, but that's why I'm going to buy before the full $7500 tax credit expires. It's hard to predict when that will happen, but my guess is sometime in summer 2022 if not sooner, so I'll probably buy during Toyotathon near the end of the year. Good overview!

Yes! Quite disappointing in overall amenities, but I’ve rarely found a Toyota product that had the surprise and delight type features/attributes. They’re definitely selling on reputation. Shame given such a strong PHEV package. I suspect they are “leaving room” for the new NX to be the luxury product. Despite competitors stepping up their interior game in the mainstream set. Thanks for watching!!

@@ir8145 Fine with me. I decided not to buy one because Toyota dealers are garbage. I found several that were available to buy but only for thousands over MSRP. I will never pay a markup for any vehicle, especially one that is overpriced to begin with. Toyota has likely lost me forever.

Congrats on your Prime! Definitely one of the best PHEV's out there. I haven't seen anything that would allow for that easy of a use case to use the existing cameras unfortunately. There may be some aftermarket software/hardware items that could enable but could likely take some work.

Nice basic overview. In my opinion, a glove box with a lock is not only completely unsecured but just an invitation for someone to bust it open and cause the owner to pay for a replacement.

A small correction: Under the rear seat is the charger and the DC-DC converter. The battery pack sits under the floor (below the driver seat).

@@stephenfiore9960 I believe water could damage the system. The system is not covered. An air intake for the fan is in front right side of the rear seat. If the air is humid, this will enter the area under the seat. Have seen a TSB (for Europe) to fix an issue when cold/humid air entering over the charger making damage in one connector plus the charger.

LET US COMPARE THE XSE VS SE: We own the Prime SE with weather package, heated seats and steering wheel, power lift gate 18 inch polished aluminum wheels, power moon roof, dual climate control, 8 inch touch screen, power driver seat, manual passenger. MSRP $41,667 we paid $41,000 -$7,500 federal tax credit $33,500 XSE vs SE: Biggest difference is fake leather vs cloth seats, 9 inch touch screen, 360 degree camera, premium sound system, vented seats, wireless cell phone charge, 6.6 kWh vs 3.3 kWh charger, 19 inch polish aluminum wheels, digital rear mirror, passenger 4 way power seat, cargo 120v inverter. Are the above features worth $9,000 more than the SE ? What I like from the XSE: The 6.6 kWh charger (2.5 vs 4.5 hr charge speed from empty with L2 charge) 120v cargo inverter plug There is a good list of extras but where it counts (engine and battery size they are equal) The 6.6 kWh charger upgrade is only available in the $50 k XSE In my opinion for the two extra features I would pay for (faster charger and cargo 120v inverter plug) the extra $9k is not worth it.

Some of the features you refer to are only on the XSE Premium. I bought an XSE for $43k that has the Softex leather seats, 9 inch touch screen, wireless cell phone charge, 19 inch aluminum wheels, 4 way passenger seat. For me those features were worth an extra $2k. My advice to buyers, look at all your options.

Have you figured out any way to separately control the built-in cameras separately to attach a hard drive as a dashcam? Seems like toyota shld have allowed for that, instead of forcing owners to buy new hardware and try to wire it neatly. Also interested in how well their android auto interface works, to reduce need to get handless mount.
@Carsplain
@Carsplain 3 жыл бұрын
It was just a test car, but I haven’t seen anything about people utilizing the existing cameras as dashcam type views. Most are pointed too far downward I would think. Android Auto works well. Have used both android Auto and Apple CarPlay in their cars. Depends what you’re trying to use it for, but we like it a lot better than the standard interface

I just purchased this exact vehicle and was looking for more of “what each button does” vs “where each button is”. Especially on the Hybrid, EV and driving modes. This is my first Hybrid/Plug-in EV and I have no idea how any of that works, when to use what mode, should I be using the EV all the time till it dies, then Hybrid, EV in city, Hybrid on highway, etc. It’s fairly confusing to a noob in the Hybrid/EV space. I’d also like to see a lot more coverage on the various safety and configuration options under the console. There are a slew of features that I have yet see anyone cover in a video, it’s just the buttons and obvious controls on the console and steering wheel.
@Carsplain
@Carsplain 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback and congrats on your RAV4 Prime! A lot of your driving modes will depend significantly on your own driving styles and uses. How many miles driven per day, terrain, highway/surface streets etc. If don’t often drive more than 40 miles at a time and have easy access to charge up at home I’d definitely recommend EV as much as you can. Some of that depends on your cost of electricity but can’t imagine there are many places where the cost of the battery charge is more than the gallon of gas you’d use. High speed highway points to having hybrid be more efficient in the long run if mixed with city driving needs after your highway trek, but if your total trip can be completed using EV then why bother with that? Maximum power/acceleration is achieved with the auto mode (so not EV only). But did like how the EV only mode kept it strictly EV, even with a firm press on the accelerator. Our driving tech video tries to demonstrate some of the advanced driver assistance systems, but yes there are many options and thresholds that can be selected in the menus. Audible warning vs active corrections, etc. What else did you consider and what car are you coming from?
@barddzen
@barddzen 2 жыл бұрын
@@Carsplain well I’m coming from a Chevy Silverado 1500 truck that got 15 mpg on a good day so this is completely new to me. What is still a bit confusing is the “auto” HV EV mode, does that automatically switch to EV when I’m off the highway or to HV when on highway? I’ve noticed the EV getting used on the highway and counting down. For example: I had it on Auto HVEV and when I got on the highway for about 5 miles the EV counted down. I would have thought it would have switched to HV and not touched the EV at all. Maybe I just understand how that all works yet.
@Carsplain
@Carsplain 2 жыл бұрын
Auto Mode just allows for the vehicle to switch between EV (which seems to be the default mode the car tries to stay in) and hybrid. Auto mode will wake up the gas hybrid portion if you floor it for full power. So that’s why even in Auto Mode it’s using up the EV portion first. It doesn’t take into account how or where you are driving. Auto favors EV mode until you floor it. I think EV mode makes the most sense if you’re able to keep your trips within the overall range. This will somewhat lockout the gas portion of the car (if you have enough battery power) and help you from inadvertently dipping into the gas side of things. On the highway you could use HV mode to force hybrid functionality, but I think the EV range will still go down if I remember correctly. Maybe not as fast. Charge mode (accessed by a long hold of the button) can help build electric range while you’re on a long highway stint if you plan on needing EV mode once you get off the highway. But does impact fuel efficiency.
@barddzen
@barddzen 2 жыл бұрын
@@Carsplain I did notice that on the first trip today. What was strange was on the highway in HV mode, the EV range went from 31 miles to 26 miles on a short trip. I was able to quick charge at the mall back to 31, but taking a back road route so I could use EV only, by the time I got home again it was back down to 26. My thought here is to use EV around town, but when on the highway, use HV. I would have thought that the Auto HV/EV would do this automatically, but at least on this one trip, not forcing EV vs HV mode manually, it appeared to eat the EV even while in HV mode which makes zero sense.
@Carsplain
@Carsplain 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely hard to adjust for all things and lots to play around with and learn about the new car! At least it has switchable modes. Our Pacifica Plug In Hybrid had no modes. Simply used EV first and then Hybrid after that, or would summon hybrid if you pressed the accelerator pedal hard enough, etc. I’m sure they thought some owners wouldn’t want to think through different power modes but I feel like many initial plug in owners do want to try to optimize and try to mix and match as they experiment.

I bought my 2021 RAV4 Prime 4 weeks ago. The starter battery dead 3 times since then. Each time I brought to the dealer they found nothing wrong with the battery and the car had the latest software update. The second time I brought it in the charge the battery to full and the battery is dead in one week even with regular driving and nothing was on in the car when it was park. The dealer won’t replace the battery because according to their battery test, the battery was still good. I recommend don’t buy 2021 RAV4 Prime yet until they solve this problem. Very frustrating when you bought this top of the line beauty and it turn out to be a lemon. Very disappointed in Toyota and the way they handle to fix the situation. As of now Toyota engineer still don’t have a fix for this.
