Let me add that I flew as a door gunner and crew chief on UH-1D model slicks during August 1969 and August 1970 in the I Corps region of South Vietnam. I was in the slicks and we had a company of assault helicopters which was D Company. A Co./ 123rd Avn. Bn. We had Charlie model gunships in 1969 then we received brand new Huey Cobra gunships. I recall admiring them and marveling at how narrow they were.

Salute Doc. We (the 170th) shared the Christmas Tree with you guys (the 119th) in '69. Bikinis & Bucs on the Beach, Gators & Crocs in the swamp. Warrants & the Huey were the backbone of Army Aviation. 200 combat flying hrs. to become an AC as I recall, rank notwithstanding. The Central Highlands - the hover hole was the ultimate test of pilot control and crew coordination. Wouldn't take a million dollars for the experience or give you two cents to do it all again. God bless and welcome home.

I was too young to go to Vietnam but I can clearly remember the news each evening giving the body count, showing video etc.. Later I had a job where I spent around 1 to 2 hours per week riding in the UH-1 so over the course of 9.5 years I accumulated many hours ridding in the UH-1. Most every pilot I flew with was a Vietnam pilot. Most were crazy but they sure had some pilot skills. Much respect for you and your service. One pilot, my good friend Roger Brown had lots of slides of his tours in Vietnam. He flew the UH-1 and later the Cobra. One set of slides was from a crash he had. Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Holloway. we flew single ship missions in the evening around the area looking for rocket tubes. When we got rocketed we'd stand on top of bunker drinking beer and pretending to direct the rockets to the flight line. Local man we called Batman burned our poop in the cut up 55 gallon drums every day. Rats the size of pitbulls. Comfort women knocking on our hootch door every other night. Then going sight seeing around Dak To and Kontum and areas west during the day. Other wars going on inside the camp: Em vs Officers, dopers vs juicers, blacks vs whites. Worst year of my life and swore I would never go back if I survived.
