I finally got my Curio and Relics 03 FFL License and wanted to share a little bit about my experience applying for it and why I did to get it. Take a listen!

I got my fflc&r license about 5 years ago what appealed to me was it was renewable every 3 yrs and it only cost $30. it also makes it a federal crime for anyone trying to steal your firearms Punishable with a $250,000 fine and up to 10 years in Federal Prison. Having that sign on my window may deter some would be thieves. I am 70 yrs old so having a rifle shipped to me and no background check needed is also a big plus.

I've had one for over 20 years. It is convenient to buy the older guns I want and have them shipped directly to me. I've only sold a couple when I wanted to buy something else. It's not a license to do business. It does help get discounts on other items too, such as gun parts and needs from Brownell's.

I got my 03C&R license in 2019. Not because I’m a collector, but because it allowed me to order ammunition online and have it shipped to my house without a background check. In California, online sales of ammunition is prohibited and must must be done at an FFL face-to-face along with a background check. It’s saved me hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on ammunition so far.

Wow I thought my state of Illinois had strict gun laws, I wouldn’t have thought a state like Virginia would ban private sales. I have held off on a C&R because it would be absolutely devastating for my bank account. That being said, I wish I knew about it at the beginning of my collecting.

Well, said. I wish I had got it a couple years ago when I was buying a ton of stuff. Oh well, will come in handy the next couple of years too. And yeah, Virginia is a pretty blue state now. Private sales were restricted after the 2020 gun laws went into effect.

Or in Illinois having to wait over a week for my background to come back for my M1917. At least the 3 day waiting period is from the day of purchase and not from when the background clears. They're really saving so many lives by delaying me from possessing a 100 year old rifle...

I've been a big fan of historic weaponry for quite some time and would like to get into the hobby, but noticed on the C&R form that it asks if you are of 21 years of age or older. I looked into it and couldn't find anywhere if acquiring a C&R license required a minimum age. I don't want to waste local law enforcements time on reading a form if I cant get a license due to age. I very much want to do everything by the book and was hoping maybe you'd have some answers that I cant seem to find. Thanks.

You are required to be 21 years or older to have a C&R. You can still get into the hobby well before you’re 21. You just have to buy guns via the conventional method.

I'm in California, Calico 9mm rifle is considered a assault weapon, it is also collectable. With a FFL03 can I purchase one ... ???

Even if it’s C&R eligible, if it violates state laws, then you can’t purchase one. Unfortunately, California’s AWB supersedes an 03 FFL.

If you buy a non-collectible firearm, what checks are required? Do you still have to go through the 10-day waiting period?

What do you mean by non-collectible firearm? Do you mean Curio & Relic firearms as defined by the ATF? If so, you can visit their website for an exact definition: www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/what-firearms-are-considered-be-curio-and-relic-firearms My state doesn’t have a 10 day waiting period so I’m guessing you’re from California. I do not know the rules there so you’ll have to ask a C&R holder who resides in your state. Some states have additional rules for C&R holders that are more restrictive than what the federal government has laid out.

A C&R is no use then. You are not using the license for a purchase like that. You comply with the laws the same as anyone.

I have no idea! I think you still have to ship to a shop but honestly don’t even want to open the can of worms that is California gun laws.

Bottom line if u want to collect surplus $200 $500 no feed and some less the $100 it is worth it and it is easier to buy in bulk if a collection let's some go and u are in the know it can be a good thing

If I use it to buy a gun at a regular gun dealer, what does it do for me?

It just means you can skip out on doing your form 4473 which is kind of annoying and having to wait around sucks. It’s also great for gunshows because it significantly speeds up transaction with vendors. Most C&R collectors do their shopping online which is where it has the most obvious benefit.
