Gettysburg also changed the approach of battle tactics I'm the U.S. Army. The confederate army was still using British Revolutionary War procedures with standing in rows on the face of fire. And Picketts Charge may have been the bravest attack in the history of US battles. It certainly was deadliest, 6000 soldiers killed. The Army after the war adopted Indian tactics while fighting in the West.

Fantastic presentation and tour! My Great Grandfather, there with the Pennsylvania, was kicked in the knee by a mule on the second day of battle and could not fight. On the third day, the majority of his regiment died. I’m convinced I would not be here if not for that mule.

@@StopMigger Sounds like someone has set himself up as God and Judge of this situation. Being kicked by a mule is not a cowardly act. It is an act of God. If he had fought with his injury he most likely would have been a casualty. Might want to tone it down a bit.

Years ago, my wife hired a guide at Gettysburg for us as my birthday present. It was one of the best presents I ever received. When we stopped people would gather around to hear our discussion about each stop. It was a discussion and not just a lecture and for the short time he seemed part of our family. A guide is definitely a great investment and can make the battle and battlefield come alive for you!

My father and I toured the battlefield in 2000. Dad was a WW11 10th MTN combat vet. When we drove to Little Round Top it was during a thunderstorm. To have have the flash of lightening and the bang of the thunder was so eerie...brought him back to Italy and his bond to soldiers of another generation. Love you dad and what your generation sacrificed for this country.

I stepped on those sacred grounds in the early 90’s on a cold winter day. Knowing my great grandfathers and ancestors were all there was extremely touching.

That is amazing. I gave a man from N. Carolina a tour of the battlefield. He also had ancestors who were here during the battle. It was a very emotional experience for him and myself. I'm not a licensed tour guide, I just shared historical facts about the battle..

Garry Adelman at his very best! He is superb at giving you a feel for the enormous sizes of the armies and the battlefields. This might be the best 2 hours I've ever spent on a "history lesson". At one point I thought I had watched this video for about 20 minutes and it had actually been 75 minutes! Time flies when you are enjoying something. I learn so much from this brilliant, entertaining man.

My great grandfather, Solomon Walter Gedney, attended the 25th, 50th and 75h reunions at Gettysburg where he fought. He died in his 90’s in 1941 soon after the 75th. He was buried in his uniform. I’m very proud of him and someday I will see Gettysburg. I’m sure he was one of the last surviving actual combatants. Thank you so much for this tour.

Garry's enthusiam is positively infectious. I've done the auto tour at least ten times and I found myself completely engaged the entirety of this video. He's completely right, you need to experience it for yourself. The sheer scope and breadth of the battlefield is incomparable. It takes your breath away just stepping foot onto such hallowed ground.

Garry this is quite possibly the best guided tour of the overall battle I’ve ever seen! Bravo sir! I would suggest that everyone start with this video and then watch your other Gettysburg videos to drill down into the individual battles. Again, well done sir! Excellent work!

Well done Garry, I have visited Gettysburg Battle Field twice in my lifetime, oh what a memory, when I was there I could just feel something very special like the spirit of the battle and a very quiet and still moments of well it moved my spirit inside a sad but very movement of the human spirit Thank you Garry

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your enthusiasm. In 2001 I was blessed to visit Gettysburg. I’m a history nut, and my grandparents immigrated from Ireland. I saw the Mourning Wolfhound monument to the NY 69th…the Irish Brigade. I walked Little Round Top. I was the only living person on that hill. But I felt as if I was being stared down the entire time. The date I was there? JULY 2. What a magnificent and humbling place. My our union always be strong. And free.

I lived near Pittsburgh in PA for my entire life (25 years) and I never went to Gettysburg. I never thought I would find any interest in visiting, truthfully. After watching this video in full, I absolutely will be making a stop the next time I'm in the state. Thank you for posting this video, you did a FANTASTIC job. Thank you so much I'm almost eighty years old I'm shamed to say I've never been there, I've always wanted to visit but never been able to, America history is important to all American people and really the world.1770's - 1870's 100 years of history is my favorite time of America history The Civil War is interest but very sad as is Indian Wars, Americans have shed their blood across our nation, and across this world for freedom and rights of what they believe in, War is a tremble thing but there is no getting out of it. I'm a Canadian University student studying American history. We are coming up on the study of the American Civil War, and of course Gettysburg will be a big part of that study. I would like to thank you Gary for such an amazing presentation of what happened there. Watching your enthusiastic tour is a wonderful introduction not only to the Battle at Gettysburg, but the Civil War battles as well. My great great grandfather Lt. Elijah Hayden died at the end of Pickett’s charge on July 3rd. He was with the 8th Ohio. I have been to Gettysburg several times and it is a very moving experience. This was an awesome video that I learned a lot from. Thank you Garry!

I was there and took my tour in the summer of 2019, on the 4th of July no less! There is nothing like having the tangible reminders that our freedoms and nation were fought for by men who literally gave "the last full measure" to ensure that future generations would be able to live in the greatest nation on earth. It is beyond visceral when you are actually there and realize that the ground you are walking upon was once soaked with the blood of soldiers who stared death in the face and were not deterred from their duty. For many of this current generation, their gratitude is oblivious because the teaching of our history is being eviscerated by those who hate this country and they have zero concept of selfless sacrifice. This veteran salutes those who died for the Union and am proud to count myself as having lineage in their tradition.

Another reason this current generation has no sense of patriotism is because they're the first generation to NOT have a parent or grandparent fight in a major war. That makes a big difference. My dad was a Vietnam veteran and he gave me his love of country. Young ppl today think it's "cool' to say how horrible America is. They have no idea the amount of freedom they have compared to other countries. They would last about 5 min in Iraq or Afghanistan. Our Constitution is a beautiful thing. It's the Leftists who spread "self hate" as an idealogy. Especially among young white ppl. I'm NOT white and even I see it. But there are still plenty of ppl here who love the country. The media gives the vocal minority the most attention unfortunately. You're right, Gettysburg has a very tangible feeling in the atmosphere. It's hard to describe.

Outstanding tour and narration. I have studied this battle for many years and visited this battlefield probably 12-14 times, so I wasn't sure what I would get out of this video, but Mr. Adelman's knowledge and enthusiasm made it well worth the time. I have visited every major battlefield from Shiloh to Gettysburg and although there are many fine historians and tour guides elsewhere, the quality here as a whole is unsurpassed.

I work two jobs 7 days a week 365 days a year. I HAVE to make it here one day. When i was young i remember my grandfather always coming here every year and telling me about it and the civil war. its a shame it wasnt until after he passed away i became totally immersed in the subject. Heres to you, old man. One day I will make it to Gettysburg, no doubt your favorite little corner of our beautiful country.

I was toured this field about 10 years ago as a freshman in high school, and I can remember constantly having flashbacks and hearing the cannons and rifles go off and visualizing everything in my head. It was truly amazing to be there. Gettysburg is the Titanic it’s the Arizona it’s a place where a part of history was acted out on the stage of the world.

I’ve traveled quite a bit during my life. Lived all over the US and many places overseas. I’ve visited many historic places including churches, cathedrals, and temples of various kinds. Gettysburg is the only place I’ve ever visited that felt holy.

Outstanding presentation! Many of us hold our historical guide experts to a Ed Bearss standard but truly, no one ever could rise to that standard. Still, our guide here was top shelf! I’ve engaged a couple of guides at Gettysburg over the years, and I found myself loathing that I was not fortunate enough to have drawn this man to take me through the three days at Gettysburg. Thank you for a sincerely epic tour that would inspire even the most uninterested, to fall pry to the addiction that is the Gettysburg National Battlefield. 👍🏻

I used to drive to PA from MI for my old job. They set me up in Gettysburg every time I went, which was often. PA became my second home, and seeing all the history was so fascinating! I never got tired of traveling there, there's so much to see! It's worth the travel time.

Garry, I’d love to see you do a lesson or two about all the monuments….well, not ALL, obviously, but it would be interesting to know how they came about, who paid for them, when most of them were constructed, etc. With over 1,400 of them, there’s bound to be some interesting stories. Apparently, there was a degree of “competition” to erect a monument bigger than the other guys’ monument. Keep up the good work!

I grew up 40 miles east of the battlefield. I have been there several times and plan to go again in 2022. There is just an aura about that place that I can't quite explain. Thank you.......

Many thanks from England. Although I will never get to see the battlefield of Gettysburg in person I have visited the Waterloo battlefield on several occasions. It is tiny in size compared to Gettysburg. I walked from one end of the battlefield at Hougoumont to the other at Papelotte and it only took me an hour. It’s hard to imagine 150000 men and 25000 cavalry packed into such a small space.

the depiction of the Battle of Borodino in the russian version of "War and Peace" is similar...fighting going on all over the place on a vast scale...yet no place on the battlefield was safe from the cannonballs...units held in reserve often sustained 20 or 30 per cent casualties just sitting on the ground!....have to remember what happened to Meade's headquarters at Gettysburg.....

I randomly clicked on this thinking “oh boy wonder what this guy is gonna be saying for 2 hours”…. I have since sat and watched every minute. I love this guy! He is so awesome and smart, so easy to listen to as well. Kind of like a story being told and we just sit back and enjoy

Garry, I have been a fan of yours since the first Battlefield talk I saw you do at Devils Den in July 2001. I am a devoted Gettys-nerd and have made several trips to the Park, including the 150th and 155th anniversaries. I've bought your books. Because of guys like you and Tim Smith and others, I am a contributing member of The ABT. I've seen so many of your KZfaq videos over the last several years. But this one is a masterpiece! Thank you so much for all you do to preserve and shine the spotlight on Civil War History and battlefields. Bravo!

@@matrixfan58 named for Count Casimir Pulaski, of Poland, who helped form, train and equip Continental US Cavalry troops in the Revolution. Then funded and fought alongside them. Poland has aided liberty for a very long time.

This is an astoundingly good quality recounting of a significant part of our national history. Ranger Garry Adelman does a masterful job of taking you through the battlefield's most critical points roughly in the sequence that the events happened during the battle. His delivery is confident and enthusiastic - no "And, uh"s while he pauses to think. The man has command of his material. What is most interesting to see is the enthusiasm he still has after many, many recountings of what we see here. In my view, he is one of our great teachers about the Civil War particularly as it relates to the Battle of Gettysburg. Finally, I had no earthly idea of how big a piece of geography contained this action. It is a physical representation of why holding the high ground in a battle is so vitally important.

We are traveling to Gettysburg this weekend for the Remembrance Day Parade! We have been here umpteen times. Even though it's a place of tragedy, it is, without a doubt, my happy place. A feeling of calm and peace surrounds me here, and I feel drawn to it. Thank you, Mr. Addleman, for your wonderful Gettysburg presentation.
