I was glad I read the comments, someone already asked my question... how exactly to connect it correctly. I just discovered this is what is wrong with my bathroom wiring in my apartment. Whenever I turn off the light in the bathroom, it makes a loud "pop" in my livingroom stereo speakers.(same circuit) Maintenance could not find the cause, he only checked the light switch which is grounded. Well turns out the light is also wired to the GFI outlet and when I trip the GFI outlet it shuts off the livingoom power. Your video now shows me WHY! Now I can ask him to fix it. Thank you!!

Constructive criticism; when making an instructional video please don't assume that your audience already knows, because if they did, they wouldn't be watching your video; for example, right in the middle of your instructional video on the time marker 4:22 you say " Now I'm going to wire it the proper way", but then you didn't show what the proper wiring way was, so that made the video ineffective, I think. Still, you did have some good points, and we appreciate your efforts. thank you.

I am not US american and understand the correct working inside less ten minutes. It is works same our RCD devices how we installing direct into the breaker box. Then all sockets or devices behind stop working. I use it in my homes in Germany and Thailand. I thinks some people see a normal power socket and rewire it same - without understand that the GFI have two independed sides now. Possible this people should ask a professional electrican guy - they know it correctly!

Thanks for the help - after fooling with it off and on for about 2 weeks thinking as a girl I had done SOMETHING wrong. It was the outlet itself. I bought a new GFCI and it worked as soon as I installed it. Bummer that is what is was but VERY glad that is all it was.. shouldn't of doubted myself so much.. lol

I always thought having one gfci protecting a number of other outlets was an efficient way to get gfci protection, but it does come at a cost of not knowing why an outlet away from the gfci may not be working. Having a gfci for each outlet needing protection is more expensive, but more convenient too. I like how you explained how to do that.

i just spent the entire time i played your video NOT paying proper attention to it because I have been calling out to my cat asking what she needs and wondering where she is at and why she is meowing so much and insinuating that she is crazy. And then right when your video was about to end and I realized that I was not giving it my full attention, my cat comes waltzing in from the room in the other direction of my speakers, looking at ME, wondering what I need and why am I asking her why she is meowing when clearly she was not and proving that clearly I am the one who's crazy. I had to laugh, but not out loud. So, let's start this again...

I installed a gfci set up to also control the adjacent socket in the double gang box. The box also contains wires to a third oulet (which I left uncontrolled) and a bathroom ceiling light. It all works as expected but the bathroom light has a slight delay. I checked the connections and found everything good. My suspicion is that the GFCI itself is causing the delay and the reason I believe this is that it only delays on the first throw. Subsequent throws cause no delay. This smacks of capacitance. I don't know what is inside a GFCI but possibly capacitor. Is it common for a GFCI to cause a delay like this?

I have my unit hooked up right with green light on. Unfortunately it will not get past the what I think they call the triple protection waybits shipped. I even tried all different ways to connect the wires and either light doesn't come on or it shows red which is the wrong way to connect so I know it's currently hooked up right. I just can't get the test/reset button to work. I have the same exact 20a-125v outlet as I had previously. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a GFCI in the garage and from fall to spring, it goes off and stays off. So both of my bathrooms' outlets are not working. Good video, but you pointed at your white pigtail saying it was the hot, Isn't the white usually neutral and hooked up to the silver terminal on the outlet, and the hot (black) hooked to the bronze terminal? But I guess that's why you shouldn't assume, and always test to make sure which is which.

I opened all three and no power is going to none of them and I checked her Panel on the side of the house and there is none that are tripped. Could there be a problem in the junction box in the attic? Her daughters bathroom has one and it works. And if I trip it and check the wires with a tester they have power.

@Dmitrytln North America has panel mounted GFCIs. They are a standard circuit breaker with a GFCI function. The problem is they are far more expensive than GFCI outlets. A GFCI outlet might be $8-$15, but a GFCI breaker will start at about $50.

You didn't show the gfci hooked up backwards. You just bypassed the gfci altogether. I think you missed the point on the last hookup.
@iconforu2c
@iconforu2c 4 жыл бұрын
No. The GFCI is not bypassed, and is working on the One socket that he has the two bottom terminals hooked onto. The "pigtail" now feeds the second socket but is not acting as a GCFI.....He does show this. What I think you're expecting was all wires hooked up on the GCFI socket, but the second socket is still not part of the GCFI, which could also be done, but he didn't show it. Hope I explained that properly to understand. Either way, both sockets do work and is not bypassed.

@@iconforu2c Yes, The GFCI is bypassed ! A GFCI is made to provide protection to the devices plugged into it AND to all non-GFCI receptables downstream. He removed the protection of all downstream outlets and he even tells you why he did it, to prevents confusion. I didnt want people to be confused, but I did want people to be un-protected. Yeah go spend more money and make every outlet a GFCI. Nuts You know there are GFCI Circuit Breakers right, they protect non-GFCI outlet, will he remove those as well?

I have a GCFI outside on a pole that I use to power my sump pump. I also ran 2 outside low watt lights from this same GCFI. The line and load are together on the bottom and the piece of tape up top has not been removed. The GCFI trips when I plug the sump in but the load continues to works for the lights. The sump will work if I plug it in to a nonGCFI. My tester says it is wired correctly (green,green). It is a brand-new GCFI. It has been working fine for several years and stopped recently. I replaced the old GCFI but it keeps tripping. Any help?

Europeans put this device into distribution board or fuse box with circuit breakers. It looks like coupled circuit breaker. As for protectable circuits - bathroom and other wet rooms obviously, all the sockets also strictly recommended. Also, better to use as more as possible those devices. If you protect all circuits by 1 GFCI, you risk to stay in full darkness if some insignificant has insulation damage. Better to protect only 2 or 3 outlets by one GFCI, but not more.

I finally solved that issue with mine by using a meter to double check my line leads to see which two leads were going to the breaker box. My assumption that it was originally wired up correctly was wrong. Whoever wired the old GFCI outlet, confused the line from the load side. Reversing that instantly fixed it.

Hey there, great video and gets exactly what need to do EXCEPT, I can't see how you wired the correct way. You didn't really turn it around and show where and which wires you connected. From what I can interpret, you combined the whites and then blacks and then connected them to only the lower terminals on the GFCI outlet? And I presume that is the same even if the upper outlet is a switch? Thanks.

Simple answer for ya bud...the 2 wire bringing power in the box gets connected the line side of the GFI..if you look at the back of a gfi it says line written on the back.. It will also say which side the hot and neutral gets connected too(brass screw for hot, silver for neutral). Now, the 2 wire feeding the plug next to it went to the load side..same thing, it's written on the back of the gfi(depending on the manufacturer of the device there may be a sticker covering those screw terminals).. And don't forget, you can always check the directions or wiring diagram ! Hope this helps

I believe that he just tied the wires for the second outlet together with the wires (hot and neutral) coming into the box with the GFCI. That way, the current for the second receptacle does not flow through the GFCI outlet. Having said that, it is quite common have a GFCI as the first outlet in a series of outlets, so that ALL of the outlets in that circuit are protected. What this video does will leave the "downstream" outlet unprotected. Less nuisance but also less safe.

cats are very hungry till this day...also note, i found both bathrooms neutral cross from line to load after i moved into home...and i find it wrong when first gcfi coming in from panel that goes to laundry room wires cross hot to load,then feed to bathroom downstairs then feed to upstairs then outside outlets ...i find it frustrated that i have to remove all the gcfi out after i found the breaker that feed them...then have the hot and neutral separated out from not touching anything for all the boxes...then turn breaker on...and carefully use volt meter to find which is hot on first box where feeder line starts from the panel...one hot black wire and other is load wire has no readings ...so i blue tape the hot so i know which is line and which jacket goes with the neutral...cause i see 2 set of wires...one line and other is load..good thing ground is all pigtail together..and i did the same for both bathrooms..by tape each hot source that is LINE ...after that, i turn off the breaker ...and start the first gcfi..correctly wire in order ..LINE wires goes to LINE only then LOAD wires goes to LOAD..then same for other gcfi...LINE and LOAD ...when its all done..i turn on the breaker and start the test and reset first gcfi..and last outlet to bathroom..that will reset power gonna to outside outlets as last location where wires ends..all outlets working in proper order..i understand that one trip ..entire line is dead...but making only one trip and letting other outlets not, is little tricky for me to do..so i rather have like this ..anyway i feel safer now if someone downstairs drop hairdryer..its best to know if your in 2nd bathroom upstairs..plug went out ..then i know fast than not

I wouldn't hook in lights off the end of a GFCI, I've seen it done though. The amount of outlets isn't determined via the GFCI, but more via the gauge of wire and circuit breaker. On a 20 amp circuit, with 12 gauge wire you can run 10 outlets safely.

Another tip is do not wire these LIVE, number one for safety reasons but when wired live you will likely blow the MOV Micro Oxide Varistor which is the brain of the device. If blown, the GFCI is rendered useless. The GFCI is designed to trip at a current leak of 5 milliamps.

One thing I heard is that you would put a GFCI outlet everywhere you need it. But as far as I know it's pointless to put a GFCI down the line from another GFCI. Once you have a GFCI installed, everything connected to that GFCI is then protected. So there's no need to put all GFCI's in conjunction with other GFCI's. But if their coming off different circuit breakers then yes, if you need the protection you can put a GFCI in. But everything coming off that GFCI is protected.

+Led ZeppelinFan Check the terminals on the side for any arching to the electrical box. This is sometimes common due to the width of the device and its close proximity to the side of the box. If this is the case, by code it is acceptable to wrap the device around the sides using electrical tape to form a barrier. Remember, a GFCI is designed to trip at 5 milliamps which is such a low current not even detected by human touch. You can have a small current leak that will cause a buzz sound but not always enough to trip the device.

I recently tried to replace my GFI outlet to a different color. When trying to switch to the new outlet, it will not work. We have tried multiple different ones and kinds and none will work. When then switched back to the old GFI outlet and it works perfectly fine. We can not figure out what is going on! Also when we install the new GFI outlets, it will not let us push either of the buttons in. Any idea what could be happening?

I have an outlet in my kitchen that has 4 wires on it ,i wanted to replace it so I plugged a light in and found the breaker that killed it. and when I checked I still had voltage on it it took two breakers to completely shut it down ,any idea on why that would be the case?
@maltestrauss
@maltestrauss 6 жыл бұрын
I am renovating houses. Had that case once. A previous owner who was a hobby electrician mixed wires from two circuits into each other. Very dangerous since none of the breakers might trip. You need a professional electrician to sort it out. The crossover might have happened in the attic in one of the junction boxes. It may take some time to test everything through.

Hi, you have good introduce of FGCI, but I am experienced a strange troubleshooting problem: My bathroom have one FGCI to control other two bathrooms receptacles. It pops up the red button sometimes just reseted it goes back to normal. But recently, the red button pop up even reset it still keep popping up, wait whole day long then reset back. Happen again yesterday. It is been used more than 28 years, I went to homedepot to get a new FGCI replaced, follow the instruction Line and Load location, use the meter to verified. The new one got the same problem keep popping up. I check the power box, reset the power breakers few times, still the same. So, what do you think? Stan 1/15/2017

Other than the annoyance of an outlet being "dead" because a GFCI outlet was tripped, what's the downside in NOT having the recepticals chained together? Isn't that safer? Also, is that an Abyssinian cat in the background? The first few times I heard it I thought it was mine.

My son has 2 regular outlets the second leads to the first of 4 GFCI outlets in the kitchen. When he uses either regular outlet it trips the GFCI. We changed both outlets although there was no apparent defects or damage. It still trips the GFCI. We then changed the GFCI. Again it trips when either of the two regular outlets are used. He can use the GFCI with no problems and the three after the one that trips are fine. Which makes me believe the problem lies before the GFCI outlets. Anyhow here's a layout of the outlets Regular - Regular - GFCI - Switch for above sink light - GFCI - GFCI

Sounds for me that some people do not understand how a GFI (or RCD) is working. A normal socket have a side for "Hot" and one other side for "Neutral". Do you can install the IN and OUT power up to you. The GFI have a _marker_ which is IN power and other is OUT power. If the CFI breaks the power for HOT side all other sockets and devices behind(!) OUT power is powerless too. That's the once secret! If you let works all your GFI outlets in one room just alone do you let the OUT power screws only empty. Do you rewire from every GFI socket only from the IN power to next GFI socket IN power. If one device is chrashed exact _only this_ GFI socket device stops the power and all other installed devices at the other GFI sockets works without a break. If you let work only one GFI outlet in one room controlled and saved all _other normal_ sockets do you put them on the OUT power of the GFI how _should_ be the first socket in this room! If one device in one of the sockets chrashed, the GFI stopped the power and all devices in _all_ sockets stops too! So do you looks what do you install inside this power chain.

Yes, I have replaced quite a few GFCI outlets for that exact reason. The line side will work fine, but the load side won't have any power. The way to test is to remove the outlet from the box so you can access the screws, and use a multimeter to test the voltages on the screw terminals. Generally the bottom of the outlet is the line, and the top is the load...

Just curious...but...then why does it say in the receptacle NOT intended for WET and DAMP locations? Anybody?
@djnikzamora
@djnikzamora 7 жыл бұрын
The receptacle itself isn't meant to be wet or damp, however it can protect you if something that is plugged into it is. They do sell industrial GFCI's that are damp/wet rated meaning they can be used outdoors. Those ones can survive outdoors with some water, but obviously are not meant to be submerged.

The most common problem with homeowners changing gfci receptacles is marking an reading the back of the old receptacle to remember which set is line side , which set is load set , not gfci receptacles have the line at the top an load on the bottom ,

This is definitely not my field of expertise. Line on a receptacle will take the hot and the load other se correct? Black goes with the brass screw and the white is the neutral that goes to the silver screw. Am I on target so far? Where I got lost is in this last example in this video you only used one set of wires..🤔 So did you cap off the load line and is that because you didnt want the power to feed another receptical down the line ? Or do I have that backwards..?

I thought that box could have only 4 Conductors, With The Two Pigtails That Makes Six, No? 🤔 Thanks For Sharing The Videos! Can You Have Two GFCI On The Same Circuit? I Have 2 Bathrooms On Same Circuit With a GFCI Receptacle In Each, It Was Fine... THEN The 1st One In The Line Tripped and Would Reset, But Not For Long, Eventually Not At All. Replaced GFCI and Replacement Not Resetting. Moving Downline, Apparently, I Have The 2nd GFCI, Another Hall Receptacle, Light Fixture and Fan/Light Fixture On This Circuit. 😝 Maybe The Pigtail is What I Need... #IGroundWheneverPossible #ThatsTheIdeaNo?
