If zones overlap, they are considered less valuable by dwarves. Shared tiles with a wall or door on them don't count as overlapped spaces. You can either designate spaces so as not to overlap at all, like he does in the video, or you can just make sure you've got doors installed in all the doorways. You can also get over the overlapped zones penalty by just filling the space with super-valuable materials. Building a pedestal and putting artefacts on it is one way to do this. It used to be the case that engravings only counted on one side of each wall tile, so some people preferred double-thick walls. However, I think that's been changed in the steam version and now both sides of the wall will see a benefit from engravings.

I think any difference you've seen in happy thoughts is more due to the value of the materials than the specific type of material used. Any metal throne will be more valuable than a wooden chair of the same quality so dwarves will be happier to sit there.

if i remember correctly, dwarfs in a tavern dining hall will get 2 happy thoughts (1 for being in a tavern and 1 for eating in a dining hall)

I assume you have a chest with mugs and booze yeah? Unlikely it's a bug.

Yes. Got 2 coffers with rock mugs in them and plenty of booze, chairs and tables. My tavern keepers tend to not do anything. When i force them to "only do this job" they just usually go to the nearest shrine and pray.

​@@stray_vrtx I played dwarf fortress recently and I realized there's a bug about that but is not related to tavern but shrines itself. My plan was to make a highly religious fortress with lots of shrines for each deity, but I didn't realize you MUST do a general / public shrine that isn't for a specific deity, otherwise your dwarf will get stuck in a shrine endlessly praying and forbidding himself to do any other tasks. If that doesn't help I suggest trying to use burrows to get your dwarf "unstuck", but keep in mind that general shrines are a must have.

You can but you don't "need" too.

They don't rent them but if somebody is sleeping in one it tells you that it's being granted.

Make a pedestal, Place the Pedestal. Then click on put item on display. Click it, Select the artifact. Decorate to your hearts content. Add it to whatever room you like.

@@BlindiRL I have been using a pedestal locked behind a door inside temples and guilds (to prevent theft). It gives a significant boost to the value of the room. Am I to assume the locked door prevents it being admired? If so do you think a military wall that lets you shoot arrows through it would allow dwarves to see it?

That's not a bug, that's designed behaviour. Blind even mentions it. Only the tavern keeper can use the mugs in a coffer in the tavern.

He mentions this in the first couple minutes
